Redmi Note 8: Review, specifications, price

xiaomi, redmi, note, which, android

Unlike Note 7 smartphone Redmi Note 8 has not a double, but a quadruple camera with finalized system of artificial intelligence. The manufacturer did not forget to add the new Snapdragon 665 processor, which is more energy efficient and productive. If we talk about battery capacity, it should be enough for two days of active use, also there is support for fast charging capacity of 18W. In general, for its cost device is suitable for most tasks, and the size of the screen at 6.3 inches will make it possible to do this much more pleasant, in addition to the IPS matrix does not almost tire the eyes. We recommend this device for a detailed and close acquaintance

Xiaomi Redmi Note 8: Unpacking

I received a standard white box, where on the front is drawn the smartphone itself and the model name. The back side is empty, and on the side is a sticker with the memory version and information about the package.

Inside the box, I found a separate box that contains: a black transparent silicone case, instructions and a needle for the SIM tray.

Below, under the box, there is a smartphone in a protective shipping film on the front. I got the smartphone for review in black.

Even below I found a Type-C cable in white and a 10W power adapter. Of course, fast charging is supported, but you’ll need to buy a separate 18W power adapter if you don’t already have one.

I’d like to note that the protective case got a separate flip rivet for the Type-C port. This is very good, unnecessary debris will not get inside the device.

The Xiaomi Redmi 8 doesn’t look much different from its predecessor. Only the bottom frame and the cutout for the front camera are smaller. The asymmetry remains, and it is this that upsets the most. Although the inscription “Redmi” under the display does not make the smartphone prettier either. The screen covers 90% of the front panel area.

Available in three colors: blue with a gradient pattern, severe black and white with a linear gradient. The smartphone’s frame is made of aluminum, and it’s covered by Gorilla Glass 5 on the back and front. The main camera is located in the upper left corner.

Review of Xiaomi Redmi Note 8: features, reviews and photos

The Chinese company Xiaomi this year has significantly modified the average price segment of the smartphone market. Not long ago, it was impossible to believe that for a modest amount of money you could get a phone with almost flagship photographic capabilities. However, now there are similar models in the range of the corporation, and the hero of today’s review brings the quality of the cameras simply to an unacceptably high bar.

The appearance of novelty has changed slightly. The body is still made of tempered glass, but the frame of the display is smaller, its diagonal. 6.3 inches. On the back are four modules and a fingerprint scanner. The gradient colors of the device add beauty and make it very attractive. The screen retained the resolution of 2340 x 1080 pixels, with a slight increase in brightness and contrast. Color reproduction is close to natural, the picture detail is nice. Eyes do not get tired during long work with the gadget.

Technical specifications have been improved. Now a good gaming performance provides Snapdragon 665 processor, 4/6GB RAM and Adreno 610 video gas pedal. Demanding games will run at mid-high graphics settings with no visible problems. The volume of internal storage varies depending on the phablet version from 64 to 128gb, a slot for microSD cards is present, but in this case you have to sacrifice one SIM card.

The main 48-, 8- and 2-megapixel (pair) cameras to the head with a Samsung GM1 sensor guarantee rich details and natural colors, even in not the best light. There is support for recording 4K video. The front module is 13-megapixel, selfies will come out sharp and detailed. Battery capacity is equal to 4000mAh, thanks to the energy efficiency of the “iron” and optimization of the proprietary MIUI shell based on Android Pie battery allows you to count on a decent 9 hours of active screen time. Unfortunately, NFC (contactless payment) again was forgotten to add to the device’s arsenal of features. However, all of the above advantages give you the opportunity to put this device in the list of potential bestsellers ahead of time.

Review of the inexpensive smartphone Redmi Note 8T

Over the past year, Xiaomi, as usual, released a large variety of smartphones, confused users with renaming and repositioning lines and promised to revise the pricing policy for its top devices, which was not slow to affect the Mi Note 10 Pro, which appeared in the official Russian retail for an unprecedented 45 thousand for Xiaomi, and later on the flagship Mi 10.

But still, no matter how hard the manufacturer tries to turn the situation around, in the minds of millions of users Xiaomi products are firmly associated with an affordable price. And it’s good that this is still true: the Redmi Note 8T is just one of the very affordable smartphones, the price of which, moreover, has managed to fall noticeably in a few months. What is capable of this inexpensive mobile device with five cameras and support for NFC, consider in this review.

Appearance and usability

Redmi Note 8T did not get expensive design, this smartphone with a very simple body geometry, plastic side frame and completely flat front and back panels looks even for its money, does not look more expensive than its level.

See also  Which Samsung will get Android 11

In the hand the smartphone even with such a chubby and simple body weighing 200 grams would be held well due to the wide side edges, which here, thank God, did not become narrower. However, the smartphone is still very slippery, because the plastic of the side frame is smooth and glossy. Why there is no glossy at all is unclear. The sides should be made matte, non-sticky and non-slip.

The block of four cameras on the back noticeably protrudes beyond the surface, so the smartphone does not lie on the table steadily. The fingerprint scanner is located here, on the back, there are no complaints.

The front camera is hidden in a teardrop-shaped cutout in the screen. It takes up very little space, but there are users, which even such a small cutout makes them nervous. But that the device does not have a light indicator of notifications, it’s a huge minus. Especially taking into account the IPS screen.

The side buttons are tactilely indistinguishable, but well located on one side, have a nice springy stroke, no complaints to them in general.

The design flaws are partially compensated for by a three-slot tray, which can simultaneously hold two Nano-SIM cards and a microSD card. It supports hot swapping cards.

The bottom end features a speaker, a microphone, a USB Type-C connector and a 3.5mm audio output for headphones.

On the top end are an additional microphone and IR transmitter. Among the pre-installed programs is Mi remote to emulate a remote control.

Redmi Note 8T is available in three colors: white, blue and black (Moonlight White, Starscape Blue, Moonshadow Grey). Fully protected from dust and moisture smartphone body has not received.

Redmi Note 8T is equipped with an IPS display with a diagonal of 6.3 inches and a resolution of 2340×1080, covered with Corning Gorilla Glass 5. Physical dimensions are 67×146 mm, 19.5:9 aspect ratio, 409 ppi dot density. The width of the frame around the screen is 4 mm on the sides, 5 mm at the top and 9 mm at the bottom, the frame for today is wide.

The front surface of the screen is designed as a glass plate with a mirror-smooth, scratch-resistant surface. Judging by the reflection of objects, the anti-glare properties of the screen are better than the screen of Google Nexus 7 (2013) (hereinafter just Nexus 7). For clarity, here is a picture of the white surface reflected in the off screen (on the left Nexus 7, on the right Redmi Note 8T, further they can be distinguished by size):

The Redmi Note 8T’s screen is noticeably darker (brightness from the photos is 104 versus 114 for the Nexus 7). Doubling of reflected objects in the screen Redmi Note 8T is very weak, this indicates that between the layers of the screen (more specifically between the outer glass and the surface of the LCD) no air gap (screen type OGS One Glass Solution). Due to a smaller number of borders (glass/air type) with widely differing refractive indices such screens look better in conditions of intensive external illumination, but their repair in case of cracked external glass is much more expensive, as it is necessary to change the whole screen. On the outer surface of the screen there is a special oleophobic (grease-repellent) coating (better in efficiency than the Nexus 7), so fingerprints are removed more easily, and appear with less speed than in the case of conventional glass.

With manual brightness control and full screen white showing, the maximum brightness value was about 470 cd/m² under normal conditions and rises to 630 cd/m in very bright light². Maximum brightness is very high, and given the excellent anti-glare properties, the readability of the screen even on a sunny day outdoors should be good. Minimum luminance value of 1 cd/m², so in total darkness the brightness can be lowered to a comfortable value. There is an automatic brightness control by a light sensor (it is to the right of the front speaker cutout, very close to the top edge of the front panel). In automatic mode, the brightness of the screen both increases and decreases as ambient light conditions change. The work of this function depends on the position of the slider to adjust brightness: the user can try to set the desired brightness level in the current conditions. If not interfered with, the auto brightness function reduces the brightness to 7.5 cd/m in total darkness² (low), under artificial light in the office (about 550 lux) sets at 100 cd/m² (normal), and conventionally in direct sunlight the brightness reaches 630 cd/m² (at most, it should be). We slightly increased the brightness in total darkness and for the three conditions above we got 15, 120 and 630 cd/m², This is the result we are satisfied with. It turns out that the auto brightness adjustment feature works adequately and allows the user to customize their performance to their individual requirements. At any brightness level, there is no meaningful backlight modulation, so there is no screen flicker either.

This smartphone uses an IPS type matrix. The microphotographs show the typical IPS sub-pixel structure:

For comparison, you can check out a gallery of micrographs of screens used in mobile technology.

The screen has good viewing angles without significant color shift, even at large deviations from the perpendicular to the screen and without inverting colors. For comparison, here are some pictures showing the same images on the Redmi Note 8T and Nexus 7 screens, with the brightness of the screens initially set to around 200 cd/m², And the color balance on the camera is switched to 6500 K.

Note the good uniformity of brightness and color tone of the white field.

The colors on the screen Redmi Note 8T have a slightly higher saturation than natural, the color balance of the Nexus 7 and the screen under test are different. The photo is obtained in the case of the profile Auto in the screen settings:

In the case of the Saturation profile there is no noticeable difference from the Auto profile, and when you select the Standard profile the color saturation is slightly less and the color balance changes slightly:

Now at an angle of about 45 degrees to the plane and side of the screen:

We can see that colors have not changed much on both screens, but Redmi Note 8T’s contrast has decreased to a greater extent due to strong black highlighting.

The brightness at the angle of the screens has decreased (by at least a factor of 5, based on the difference in shutter speed), and has decreased about equally. The black field strongly brightens when deflected diagonally, but remains conditionally neutral gray. Photos below demonstrate this (brightness of white areas in perpendicular plane of the screens is the same!):

When viewed perpendicular, the black field uniformity is excellent:

The contrast (about the center of the screen) is high at about 1160:1. Black-white-black response time is 21.5ms (10ms on/off). 11,5 ms off.). Transition between 25% and 75% grayscale (numeric color value) and back takes a total of 38 ms. Constructed on 32 points at equal intervals by the numerical value of grayscale gamma curve revealed no clutter neither in the light nor in the shadows. The index of the approximating power function is 2.18, which is close to the standard value of 2.2. At the same time, the real gamma curve deviates slightly from the power dependence:

This device has a dynamic brightness adjustment of backlighting with unobvious dependence on the time and the nature of the displayed image. As a result, the obtained dependence of brightness on the hue (gamma curve) may not correspond to the gamma curve of the static image, because measurements were carried out with a consistent display of grayscale on almost the entire screen. For this reason, a number of tests determining the contrast and response time, comparing the black backlight at angles we conducted (however, as always) with the output of special patterns with constant average brightness, rather than monochrome fields in the whole screen. In general, such a fixed brightness correction does not bring anything but harm, because the constant change of brightness of the screen at least can cause some discomfort.

The color gamut in the case of the Auto profile is slightly wider than sRGB:

If you select the Standard profile, the coverage is pushed to the sRGB boundaries:

The spectra show (profile Auto) that the light filters of the matrix mix up the components to a moderate extent:

At the same time the green and red hump is relatively well separated, which leads to some widening of color gamut.

The default color temperature is a bit high, on the order of 8500 K. However, in this device when selecting the Auto profile it is possible to correct the color balance by adjusting the hue with a dot on the color wheel or by selecting preset options. In addition, the correction is done automatically when the Standard profile is selected.

The result in the latter case is good (see. graphics below), as the color temperature becomes close to the standard 6500 K, and the deviation from the Spectra of a totally black body (ΔE) Most of the grayscale is below 10, which isn’t bad for a consumer device. At the same time, the color temperature and ΔE changes little from tint to tint, and this has a positive effect on the visual evaluation of color balance. (The darkest grayscale areas can be ignored, because the color balance is not important there, and the measurement error of the color characteristics at low brightness is large.)

In the settings you can reduce the intensity of the blue component:

In principle, bright light can cause a disturbance of the circadian rhythm (see “The circadian rhythm”). article about iPad Pro with a 9.7 inch display), but everything is solved by adjusting the brightness to a comfortable level, and to distort the color balance, reducing the contribution of blue, there is absolutely no sense.

To summarize: The screen has a very high maximum luminance (630 cd/m²) and has excellent anti-reflective properties, so the device without any problems you can use outdoors even on a summer sunny day. In total darkness, the brightness can be lowered to a comfortable level (down to 1 cd/m²). It is also possible to use automatic brightness adjustment mode, which works adequately. The advantages of the screen should include the presence of effective oleophobic coating, the lack of air gaps in the layers of the screen and visible flicker, high contrast and excellent black uniformity, as well as close to sRGB color gamut and good color balance (after choosing the desired profile). The disadvantages are the low stability of black to a deviation from the perpendicular to the plane of the screen. Considering the importance of the characteristics for this particular class of devices, the quality of the screen can be considered high.

Redmi Note 8T the owner of the so-called quad-camera, as they now call smartphones with four rear modules. However, the two modules (with the same characteristics of 2 megapixels, 1/5.0″, 1.75 μm, f/2.4) are only used for depth of scene and macro photography, so there are essentially only two main working modules, the main one and the wide-angle one, without the long-focus one.

The settings have a manual mode, auto HDR, panorama, portrait, night and slow motion slo-mo. No built-in ability to save photos in RAW, but you can use third party software to do so.

The main camera has a 48-megapixel Sony IMX586 (1/2.0″, 0.8 micron) and f/1.8 lens with a viewing angle of 79.4. There is PDAF-autofocus, but no optical stabilization. The default camera shoots at 12 megapixels with a binning function (intelligently combining 4 pixels into 1), and the maximum resolution mode of 48 megapixels is very conveniently enabled directly from the mode carousel without having to go into the settings for it. Smartphones with 48-megapixel cameras we now see very often, experience has been accumulated, and it must be said that the Redmi Note 8T is sort of not the worst among its peers. You can’t see the fine details in the 48 megapixel photos, they are blurry and a bit fuzzy all the time. And a direct comparison with 12 megapixel pictures shows that the 48 megapixel pictures do not have more detail. No reason to take pictures in this resolution, because it only makes the picture look heavier.

Superior display quality

The diagonal size of the new items screen is impressive, because it is 6.3 inches, and therefore, Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 can be classified as a phablet, as its predecessor Redmi Note 7. In view of such a solid size of the display it was decided to increase the resolution to FullHD. Thanks to this the picture is excellent, it has a good level of brightness, contrast and natural colors. Automatic and manual brightness adjustment option.

The option to block harmful blue light is designed to reduce the strain on the visual system. The fact that the Xiaomi smartphone is safe for eyesight is confirmed by the TUV Rheinland Low Blue Light certificate of conformity.

For a model characterized by a fairly thin frame, as well as the presence of the inscription Redmi on the bottom frame. The front camera is located at the top of the display in a drop-shaped notch. It does not draw much attention to itself, so the design does not spoil at all.

In 2019, I was faced with the problem of choosing a new smartphone. At that time my phone was severely outdated and not coping with the tasks, so I began to look for a new gadget and settled on the Xiaomi Redmi Note 8, at that time a novelty in the technology market.

When choosing a new phone I was guided by the following factors:

  • Price palette (for me, as a student, the cost of the product is important; an acceptable price should not exceed 5 thousand, but at the same time in terms of build quality, appearance and functionality not inferior to more expensive gadgets “hello, China!”.- I thought, and I was right)
  • Availability of quality camera
  • Frameless screen
  • After the plastic case of the last phone model I wanted something “richer”. I have been thinking for a long time whether to use glass or metal as a back cover and I still prefer the glass. The pros and cons of this decision, and whether I regret my experience will tell below
  • An enduring battery that will stay with me from the morning, on “exciting” fumes on a walk with friends, and into the late afternoon
  • I am not a fan of playing games on the phone, so the performance in games was not in the first place for me, but of course for me it is important that the phone “pulls” complex programs
  • Like any girl I wanted to fall in love with the look of the gadget at first sight, but with this when choosing a device often have problems: the same type, at first glance, devices often have some repulsive detail that discourages from buying (about one I will tell below)

Now that you’re familiar with the criterion of the request for you will not be surprised by the evaluation, which I will put in the end, and all highlighted pros and cons, will be logically justified.

I want to say at once that for all “computer geniuses” and people who understand the technology well: my review is written from a purely feminine point of view you will not find here a lot of technical specifications. this information is full on the Internet, instead, I am happy to answer the questions, the answers to which at one time and could not find. I hope to be useful to you. Let’s proceed!

  • The colors in the line: black, white with shades of blue and blue with shades of purple
  • Screen diagonal 6.3″ (for a petite woman’s hand such a diagonal may initially seem a bit too large, sometimes it is inconvenient to lower the notification curtain down / work at the top of the screen, but it’s a matter of habit)
  • 2340×1080 (no pixels visible)
  • 8 cores, 64GB built-in and 4GB RAM
  • Slot for 2 SIM-cards and a memory card
  • Front camera 13Mp, main camera 48Mp8Mp2Mp2Mp
  • Firmware version. global (updated over the air, via Wi-Fi, also the manufacturer has a Chinese version, there’s a little trouble with the update. Buying on the “gray” market be sure to specify the version of the firmware from the seller, buying a smartphone in a certified chain store you are practically 100% guaranteed to get the global version out of the box. What is the difference. read online)

Chinese manufacturers are known for their diligence. so new products are released more often than the average user expects. That is why many relatively new models with the release of new products lose in value. With this model the situation is slightly different: two years ago I bought a smartphone in Allo (Ukrainian electronics chain store) for 5000 UAH at discounts, at the time of writing this review (April 2021) its price is 5600 in the same configuration. I think this can be explained by a well-balanced filling of the device, stylish appearance and cool, as for such a price segment, the camera.

The manufacturer positions the device as a frameless, here I would disagree: the smartphone has a frame, but they are minimal when the screen is off completely invisible, and in work you get used to them and stop noticing. Pleasantly pleasing drop-shaped cutout front camera. It favorably distinguishes the device from many “peers” with “bangs”, coquettishly imitating an apple. The only thing that confuses the front side, the very disadvantage that I wrote about at the beginning of the inscription Redmi on the bottom side of the frame, and there is a question: the bottom edge is so wide that the inscription was placed there and we have not forgotten what device we use “hello, marketing 2000” or seeing such a wide field for creativity Chinese manufacturer wanted to add something.

The rear side of the smartphone is made of glass, the manufacturer that it is shockproof (tested by falling on the asphalt device passed, but it is worth noting that: a) it was in a case b) fell on the Ukrainian asphalt.

The device is available in three colors of which black seemed to me the most optimal. The back panel without a cover looks fascinating, like a black mirror. Here it is immediately worth noting a minus, not so much a minus, but a certain point: this black mirror perfectly collects fingerprints and puffs, but it is frustrating twice a year when you take the case and wipe the phone from the dust. Of course it is possible to risk wearing the phone without a case, but I somehow do not risk, although it is convenient in the hand and does not slip out.

The next outstanding design element, in the literal sense of the word, are 4 camera modules, stretching along the left side of the device. At first I was confused by the newfangled number of cameras, but now it has become customary and even a nice element of the phone that attracts the attention of others.

The smartphone is sold in an ergonomic cardboard box, in principle, nothing new and there is no point in dwelling on it for a long time. It opens conveniently, the cardboard is thick, which does not crumple during transportation and keeps the smartphone safe even in the case of ordering from AliExpress (but here, of course, the wonders of our mail know no bounds and I would ask the seller to secure the packaging not only a bag with bubble wrap).

Redmi 8Protective CaseChargerCableSIM Card Removal ClipPower Adapter 10W Warranty Card User Manual

The box conveniently holds stickers with basic information about the smartphone and bar codes.

Inside are two instructions, but let’s be honest with each other. They won’t be opened, and if you have any questions, it’s worth watching the video on YouTube. For the modern man who already had experience using a smartphone, everything will be intuitive and he will not find anything complicated in setting up the phone.

The charger out of the box consists of two elements: a charger and a cable that pleases long and hardiness, for two years there were no cracks, the cable has not yellowed, and did not fray in vulnerable places. The phone from the native charger charges in two hours. There is also a fast charging function and an economy mode.

Impression of use:

Quickly got used to its oblong shape, which was a little confusing at first. In the hand lies comfortably, all the buttons in their places and in “reach” of the fingers, no need to reach anywhere and shift the gadget in your hand.

Nice interface, nothing superfluous, everything is standard and understandable.

Good screen contrast and viewing angles. Even in bright summer sun the screen does not burn out, does not glare and remains readable. Minimum brightness is comfortable, there is no screen flicker.

Details you’ll learn about as you use it:

My battery lasts up to two days of moderate use (a few hours on social media, active messaging, talking on the phone, reading), and when active it’s stable for 24 hours. In the cold it also works and does not die at 15%.

At 16 per cent the phone will work two hours more in standby mode, the same charge is enough for a short video on YouTube or a relatively long telephone conversation. In an emergency, your phone will not let you down, and will not shut down at the most inopportune moment.

The smartphone has a 4000 mAh battery and comes with an 18W fast charger. Power consumption does not particularly stand out against competitors and its class.

It works without problems, I have not encountered such a problem in the course of using the phone. The smartphone is reliable, ideal for “advanced” pensioners or parents, to communicate with them peacefully in roaming and video chat (and do not be afraid that the phone will glitch or lose the network, than lead a not advanced user to the hysteria that he was “broke something”)

According to Xiaomi, the speaker in the Redmi Note 8 has a very balanced range of reproduced frequencies. Watching movies/series, YouTube, listening to music and voice messages is very comfortable, the sound is clear and pleasant. The conversational speaker reproduces the voice well.

The split screen is a very useful feature, thanks to which you can place two applications on the screen (messenger and Google tab, YouTube, etc.).д. with other applications that support screen sharing). The large loads of the phone does not hang up, only if all the memory on the phone is busy, slowness begins, in general, the gadget is fast and cope with their tasks.

For me, as a creative person, the quality of photography that can be extracted from a smartphone is of great importance, because professional cameras are not always at hand. For myself I can single out several important points, which I will tell you about, because when buying this smartphone, I could not find answers to the questions I had, not even on the Internet or from the sales consultants.

The smartphone does not do an excellent job taking pictures at night, there is a lot of noise, the photos are not distinctive clarity, but in general to achieve an average quality photos are possible.

In the evening you can get better quality photos and I can even praise the smartphone for good shots of sunsets.

It is better to monitor and edit manually (by clicking on the object on the screen), because sometimes the photos are backlit or vice versa dark.

Focus is adjusted by lightly tapping the subject on the screen. Focuses quickly and without criticism, pleasantly soars the background.

  • The response of the camera application at the first opening (very often valuable moments are fleeting and the speed of the response of the application is sometimes critical)

The smartphone is “fast” and opens all applications quickly without slowdowns, the only reason for the slowdown may be a clogged memory and “1000 tabs of open applications”

There are already some visible problems with it. To start with, I will say that the quality in Photo mode is poor and only gets worse if you start to zoom in. In 48Mp mode you can not zoom in on the frame, only the source, so the quality stays the same.

The quality of photos is quite good, I shoot only at “48 MP”, I do not use other modes in everyday life. Portrait mode, night mode, panorama all this, we can say, nominally, requires a straight hand and a share of skill.

To my great surprise, the module after two years of active use of the gadget in perfect condition and no visible defects on it, although I was sure that the first scratches will appear on it. But for more security, you can buy a protective glass and a camera.

The automatic color adjustment is quite correct.

It is worth noting that all the photos in the previously written reviews were made for a smartphone Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 (I do not plan to update the gadget in the near future, so that further reviews will also be made on the Redmi Note.

  • Large screen
  • Quality of photos
  • Fast charging
  • Good speaker sound
  • Good performance for a small price
  • Bright color rendering
  • Stylish design
  • No “bangs” on half of the screen

Considering all of the above pluses and the positive experience of using it for two years, I haven’t found any significant disadvantages.
