Which devices are suitable

First, the required minimum is GTX 1060 and GTX 1060 Ti, as well as their AMD counterparts. Keep in mind that at least 6 GB of video memory is required, otherwise the picture will “sink” at the most unexpected moment. for example, when quickly moving around the game world, locations and objects simply will not have time to load.

At the minimum settings, such graphics accelerators can produce, on average, from 30 to 40 FPS.

Buying a PC for Video Editing: What You Need to Know!

We are talking about “fresh”. for example, FarCry 5 and similar demanding games. Old proven masterpieces such as 2015’s The Witcher 3 can produce more frames per second, and the quality of the graphics can be set higher.

In any case, you should take into account how well the game is optimized. some projects slow down even on the most powerful computers. GTX 1070 and GTX 1070 Ti or even better 20 series are more suitable for our task. here both the picture will be better and the FPS is higher.

At medium settings, it is quite possible to achieve 60 FPS, and at ultras, the indicator is unlikely to drop below 40.

It is worth considering the brand and specification of each specific device. With the same price and graphics chip used, the performance of competitors’ products can vary significantly.

The most reliable option is the GTX 2080 and the Ti version or a similar power device from AMD. However, in addition to the sky-high price, one should also take into account such parameters as power consumption, the length of such a “bandura”, the noise emitted during operation and the possible need for additional cooling.

Do not worry about performance: at maximum settings, such a device stably holds 60 fps, and at ultras, the number of frames per second rarely drops below 50.

In today’s post, we will look at what video card is needed for a 4K monitor, including for games. You will also find out if you need a video card at all if you are not fond of video games, but love to watch movies.

Requirements for video cards

In order to support the monitor at 60 hertz, the video card must be equipped with an HDMI 2.0 port. Earlier revisions do not support this frequency.

For 4K video, this is not critical, but when playing a game, it becomes noticeable if the hertsovka lags behind the FPS. You can read more about monitor connectors here.

Almost all top-end video cards based on the Nvidia chip are equipped with such a port. AMD is a little behind in this regard: the port is installed only in some models, so it is recommended to study the specification before buying a new graphics accelerator.

For a comfortable game at such a resolution, first of all, the amount of the device’s graphics memory is important, because it has to memorize a much larger amount of data. textures, objects of the game world and your character himself.

High bit depth and baud rate are more relevant when connecting a monitor with high hertz. Read about the bit width of the memory bus on the video card here.

For the stated reasons, only 10 series video cards from Nvidia (or their analogs with the corresponding port) are suitable for 4K gaming, and even then not all, but only starting from the middle level. Older versions, such as the GTX 970, alas, are not suitable, despite their efficiency in performing targeted tasks.

The budget “dozens” from Nvidia are also not suitable, and more specifically GT1030, GXT 1050 and GTX 1050 Ti. their power is simply not enough for comfortable gaming.

In addition to resolution, FPS should also be taken into account, and such devices, especially in modern demanding games, are unlikely to produce more than 30 frames per second. It is believed that the optimal FPS regardless of the genre of the game is at least 60. It is better, of course, if this indicator is higher.

Additional Information

These values are valid for modern solo games. Multi-user projects in this regard are more democratic. The reason is that they are aimed at the mass consumer, and many fans do not always play with top-end PCs.

The only exception among trending games is, perhaps, only Black Desert Remastered, released back in 2018.

In addition to the fact that it focuses on graphics and detailed drawing of all game objects, the developers do not bother with optimization issues at all. This game sometimes lags even on top builds, but you can play it in 4K resolution.

If you are not interested in gaming, in principle, to display an image on a 4K monitor, a graphics accelerator integrated into the processor is enough. Any “stone” from Intel with the “I” prefix. the fifth, seventh or eighth series will do.

Such an assembly will quite pull a movie or video clip in 4K resolution, including when viewed in an online cinema or on YouTube.

Corel VideoStudio Pro

A professional tool with a fairly simple interface. The license is paid, but there is a trial period. The program allows you to create three-dimensional videos from conventional.

Computer for editing 4K video

For video rendering, it is better to use a video card with CUDA technology. The professional option is NVIDIA Quadro. You will achieve acceleration of the process several times, besides, the boards do an excellent job of rendering lossless. When working with capacious video files while applying effects, you can watch the preview without delays and with normal FPS.

The difference between a professional Quadro video card and any other GTX or RTX is in the drivers. Quadro’s mid-range offerings have counterparts among game cards. But the top ones have a huge supply of video memory. this is just what you need for video rendering and working with 3D models.

If you are not professional in video processing, but you need a computer that can handle 4K rendering, you can get a gaming graphics card. Starting with the GTX 9xx series, all NVIDIA graphics cards work with CUDA technology. The performance will be lower, depending on which card you install. But other things being equal, the same Quadro P4000 and GeForce RTX 2080 ROG have the same memory reserve and bus width. However, when rendering 3D scenes and videos, the Quadro will perform better, although in games it will not give out the power that the RTX 2080 can provide.

Be sure to use multiple screens, this will speed up your work several times. All top-end graphics cards support multiple displays. Needless to say, when working with 4K video, an additional monitor with the same or higher resolution is simply necessary.?

Avid Media Composer

Another Hollywood movie making tool. With his help, “Avatar” was mounted. The application is not simple, it contains a huge number of effects. There is Russian localization and even a trial period. The license costs more than a thousand dollars, but there is a monthly subscription.

Lightworks

A very serious professional tool for creating feature films. There is no Russian localization, the license is very expensive. Definitely for those who know what they want.

4K Video Editing PC on a BUDGET

Movavi Video Editor

A small paid app for beginners. There is a preview version, but it does not support Full HD and Ultra HD. The extended version has all the functions of the startup software. The interface is similar to Premier Pro. it will be easier to adapt to it after Movavi.

4K. the lot of the elite

4K monitor technology is gaining momentum. In 2014-2015, such a monitor was a rarity, and only in 2017 did the screens go to the masses in the CIS. For example, in 2013 the share of UHD screens was no more than 5%, and in 2017 their number approached 15%.

Most of the 4K-resolution screens are used for special needs such as advertising platforms, information boards, interactive panels. Less often workstations are equipped with them, here the percentage of use is quite small. These monitors are most in demand when working with graphics, three-dimensional models and video editing.

For home use, 4K monitors are used even less often, but their share is growing. The screens imply high quality content, but so far this format remains exclusively premium class. Even for watching video, special requirements are put forward for the PC. the presence of a powerful video card and a DVI or HDMI 2.1 connector. To process such video, you need a computer with very high performance.

Adobe Premiere Pro

A powerful tool that helps you process videos. Adobe has long taken a strong position in the graphics software market. This tool can be called universal. If he cannot do something, then the functionality can be expanded with the help of other programs of the same developer.

4K Editing Computers

Forget HDMI

First of all, you need to concentrate on connecting to the DisplayPort connector and forget about HDMI. You won’t find a USB-C hub that outperforms DisplayPort using HDMI, but you can find hubs that offer higher resolution and refresh rates over DisplayPort. I suspect that most HDMI-enabled hubs internally simply operate via DisplayPort and a DisplayPort to HDMI converter. This is because video over DisplayPort to USB-C at the same frequency and resolution can be transmitted more efficiently than over HDMI.

DualMode DisplayPort connectors are capable of acting as HDMI connectors with a simple passive adapter (it converts 3.3V to 5V). Conventional DisplayPort connectors cannot do this and require an active HDMI adapter. I do not know any other differences between these two types of DisplayPort.

Bandwidth Tradeoffs: It’s All About Bands

The 24-pin USB-C connector is the key to understanding.

USB-C connectors have four differential different pairs, or “lanes”, for high speed data transfer. There is also a fifth pair, D and D-, transferring data in the old USB 2.0 style.

Let’s see what happens when DisplayPort is added to this heap:

USB 3.1 Gen 2 uses only two of the four lanes, as shown in the top two rows of the table. The other two are wasted (USB 3.2 will use them). These two bands can be converted to support the native DisplayPort signal using what is called DisplayPort Alternate Mode. this is shown in the middle lines. In this case, the USB-C connector acts as a different DisplayPort connector with additional wires for USB data. The performance of USB 3.1 does not lose. To a computer and an external monitor, it looks exactly like a normal DisplayPort connection.

Dual DisplayPort lanes provide ample bandwidth for one external monitor up to 4K / 30Hz resolution. It’s fine for movies, but working with Windows or MacOS desktops at 30Hz is cruel. To maintain a refresh rate of 60 Hz, you need to reduce the resolution to 2K.

If you need 4K 60Hz, 5K, or multiple external monitors, you’ll need to use DisplayPort Alternate Mode with all four lanes for DisplayPort data transmission, as shown in the bottom lines of the table. To a computer and an external monitor, this still looks like a normal DisplayPort connection. However, there are no more lanes for USB 3.1 data. All that remains is the old D / D- pair, providing slow USB 2.0 data. This means that no USB-C hub using this technology to transfer 4K 60 Hz video can have USB 3.1 ports.

READ  How to disable a surveillance video camera

It is also possible to support external displays with DisplayPort without using dedicated lanes for DisplayPort Alternate Mode, and there are two different approaches for this. If your computer’s USB-C port has Thunderbolt 3 support, then DisplayPort data can be transferred within Thunderbolt data. Then the video data becomes another type of data layouts, compressed along with everything else. Thunderbolt 3 has enough bandwidth to support multiple 4K60 connections this way, leaving room for USB 3.1 data.

That’s cool, but Thunderbolt 3 hubs are expensive and your computer needs to have Thunderbolt 3 support, which many don’t. It also looks different for a computer. unlike DisplayPort Alternate Mode, there are no native DisplayPort signals and no direct connection to the computer GPU. I don’t know if there is a video processing delay because of this, or if it is all magically processed in the chipset without losing speed. I guess there is no loss.

So what are our options?

With all of the above, we can categorize USB-C hubs into four categories based on how they handle video. Here are examples from each category.

Understanding the video transmission in 4K resolution at 60 Hz via a USB-C hub

USB-C offers exciting new possibilities, including connecting external monitors via the USB port. Inexpensive USB-C to DisplayPort and HDMI converters are common. Also, there are often USB-C hubs with support for external monitors, but trying to understand their capabilities and limitations can be very confusing. Some are Mac compatible, some are not. Some people need drivers. Support for resolutions and refresh rates varies greatly. Some are advertised as “not meant to play”. Mention is made of alternative modes, dual modes, and more. vary from 20 to 300, and the functions of both are very similar. What is going on?

This is an instruction for transferring high definition video over USB-C, which I would like to have in due time. If you want to connect a high definition monitor to your USB-C computer.

DisplayLink

Another way to support external monitors without stripe allocation is DisplayLink. This technology compresses video on the host side, sends it over USB 3.1 as general purpose data, and converts it back to video on the other end using a special chip such as the DL-6950. It’s like accessing the screen of a work computer from home via a remote desktop system, only it all happens on your same desktop.

DisplayLink is well suited for cramming high-definition video onto a low-speed USB connection, or supporting multiple external monitors without using Thunderbolt. However, when alternatives are available, it is best to avoid DisplayLink. Here are its disadvantages:

0 video lanes. Thunderbolt 3

Such hubs support external monitors up to 4K60, possibly 5K, and data via USB 3.1. Should work on any computer with Thunderbolt 3 support. This is the most expensive option, and costs around 250. 300.

Making a PC for 4K video editing in 2018

2018 is starting very soon, so those who are considering buying a new PC should decide. whether to take it “straight from the counter” or make it yourself for your own tasks. Provideocoalition author Jose Antunes has prepared a guide to building the perfect PC for 4K video editing.

Several years ago, in search of inspiration, Jose followed the recommendations of Boot magazine, which at some point was renamed Maximum PC. Unfortunately, “Maximum PC” is no longer available, so he had to look elsewhere for recommendations. That’s when MSI’s PC Building Guide was found with the subtitle “Perfection Comes From Within”.

MSI. it is a company known in the computer games circles for its functional solutions. MSI is committed to creating your own PC as the best solution for users who need to work quickly and efficiently on projects.

When you buy everything yourself, you are not limited, for example, by the system unit. One such example. with graphics cards that in recent generations have become so large that they would not fit in many system units, which means that in order to use them, it was necessary to move the entire motherboard and components to a larger system unit.

The key question right now is the number of cores your processor offers. Here MSI says that “when editing 4K video files with professional software that requires high performance, such as Vegas Pro. you get more out of CPU cores or processors for faster video processing. Each CPU core provides the processing power for encoding, rendering, and exporting video files. Simply put: more cores equals faster video processing and greater efficiency even at higher resolutions. “.

The assemblies recommended by MSI use Intel processors. or Intel X-Series. related to MSI X299 SLI PLUS motherboard. supporting up to 18 cores, or Intel 8th Generation with Z370 SLI PLUS motherboard. supporting up to 6 cores. The first motherboard offers 8 DIMM slots and the second. only 4 DIMMs.

It is at this point that you start choosing as a motherboard. the defining moment is whether you can increase memory.

For video editing, “there will always be a shortage of RAM or system memory. For editing Full-HD video, at least 16 GB of RAM is recommended. 32GB RAM or more is recommended for 4K video content. When you are editing in multiple threads at the same time, the amount and speed of your RAM will affect the time it takes to process video and preview. ” Buying a motherboard that allows you to go beyond the RAM values (which are currently in use) will enable you to use your system for a longer period by simply adding more memory, a faster processor, and a more powerful graphics card. This is why choosing a motherboard is so important. Buy it for the future.

Obviously, MSI sells its products through this guide, which is why they point out the importance of implementing DDR4 BOOST technology on their motherboards. It is a fully isolated memory circuitry for DDR4 memory and keeps the memory signals between the CPU and RAM clean, preventing other signals from interfering. This helps the memory to perform at its best and at the same time provides excellent stability.

One important aspect. these motherboards support both M.2 SSD and U.2 SSDs, which are now becoming popular. MSI says that “you can make your system faster by setting up an M.2 SSD to RAID 0 with ease using the MSI M.2 Genie BIOS, which makes the process much easier. Experience the benefits of the fastest SSD installation in just a few clicks. “.

Memory is very important to editors and we mentioned the 10TB Seagate BarraCuda Pro HD earlier. But having motherboards offering at least eight SATA 6Gb / s hard drive ports, as the SLI Plus does, means expanding memory is easy, especially when it comes to enclosures with hard drive trays.

Besides the expected outputs, including a large number of rear and front USB ports, including Type-A and Type-C USB ports, the MSI SLI PLUS motherboard even has USB 2.0 Gen2 ports. which allow two USB devices to transfer data up to 8 GB / s simultaneously. Motherboard. it is the base of your PC, so when you have chosen it, find other parts and put them together. You should not only be able, but also love making computers, and also have patience. But believe me, it will bear great fruit.

However, the most important part. it is not a combination of all the components inside a box, but a selection of components for your specific needs. MSI has created specific pages on its website explaining everything you need to know to build your own computer, as well as helping you build your own build list. MSI recommends one useful resource: PCPartPicker.

PCPartPicker will help you select parts, tell you about their compatibility, and there is also a pricing guide.

ASUS N580VD-DM446

The lightweight and compact Asus deserves attention for its 15.6 ”matte anti-glare display, which allows you to truly appreciate the graphics, and the purest sound. No problem with 4K editing with a GTX 1050 graphics card, it’s literally made for that.

The main advantages of a laptop:

  • GTX 1050 card allows the user to see all the details of the picture;
  • equipped with 8 GB of RAM and 1 TB storage, which makes it the best assistant in work even with heavy programs for the device.

DREAM MACHINES Clevo G1050-15

It is not for nothing that this brand has the word “Dream” in its name: the G1050-15 impresses with its image quality. The flawless IPS panel is supplemented with a coating that eliminates glare. Initially, the gaming version is also suitable for installation due to its parameters:

  • 15.6 ”diagonal allows the user to appreciate all the details of the image;
  • excellent processor. Intel Core i7-7700HQ.

DELL Inspiron 7567

Inspiron 7567 opens the rating. the first, but not the last representative of the game-class in the list. In such laptops, the emphasis is on graphics, which is important not only for gameplay, but also for working with the display displays a picture in Full HD, which provides good detail, and thanks to the anti-glare coating, you can work comfortably regardless of the lighting.

  • originally a gaming-grade model, the laptop is equipped with a strong Intel Core i7-7700HQ processor and a high-quality FHD display;
  • 74 Wh battery allows you to work quietly and not be tied to an outlet.

But there is also a small drawback: the TN matrix is really a good option for a gaming model: fast response is its main advantage over IPS. However, besides this TN, there is nothing to boast: its viewing angles are worse and the color rendition does not reach the realistic IPS palette, so the laptop is not ideal for editing.

ACER Aspire 7 A715-71G

But this laptop has what the previous model lacks. an IPS matrix. 1080P matte display allows owners of the device to enjoy a high-contrast picture in any light and without distortion.

  • a quad-core processor, impressive with its power. Intel Core i5-7300HQ;
  • Dolby Audio Premium. an innovative system that makes the sound almost perfect;
  • a fingerprint scanner will protect information from prying eyes.

But there are also disadvantages: the laptop is quite weighty (2.35 kg), it is not so easy to carry it with you.

MSI GE73-8RF

MSI’s astonishingly powerful laptop is definitely one of the best choices for editing. Renowned for its quality, the GTX 1070 is paired with a 6-core Intel Core i7 to create an astounding performance machine.

Another game laptop in the TOP, featuring:

  • impressive RAM. 16 GB;
  • innovative graphics card GTX 1070 with support for augmented reality technologies;
  • wide screen with a diagonal of 17.3 “.

Despite its cost and loud parameters, there are still small drawbacks: rather noisy coolers and a rather heavy construction (2.89 kg).

HP Pavilion Power 15-cb021ur

This laptop is a great option for working with video due to its features:

  • matte finish makes you forget about glare: the picture is visible clearly in any lighting;
  • IPS panel “gives” a wide viewing angle. 178 °.

Users had only one complaint: 8 GB of RAM is an acceptable average parameter, but certainly not the best one. When working on large projects, RAM may not be enough.

TOP 10 best laptops for working with video

Choosing a laptop for video editing is not an easy task. Installation of rollers is a painstaking, laborious process, which, moreover, heavily loads the system. Anyone who has ever undertaken to edit video on a non-intended (weak, old) laptop knows that this is almost a super task and a big test for nerves. It is better to approach the matter correctly. and start work with a technique that is ready for the overloads that await it in the process. Below in the article.
