It is believed that the optimal FPS regardless of the genre of the game is at least 60. It is better, of course, if this indicator is higher.
These values are valid for modern solo games. Multi-user projects in this regard are more democratic. The reason is that they are aimed at the mass consumer, and many fans do not always play with top-end PCs.
The only exception among trending games is, perhaps, only Black Desert Remastered, released back in 2018.
In addition to the fact that it focuses on graphics and detailed drawing of all game objects, the developers do not bother with optimization issues at all. This game sometimes lags even on top builds, but you can play it in 4K resolution.

First of all, you need to concentrate on connecting to the DisplayPort connector and forget about HDMI. You won’t find a USB-C hub that outperforms DisplayPort using HDMI, but you can find hubs that offer higher resolution and refresh rates over DisplayPort. I suspect that most HDMI-enabled hubs internally simply operate via DisplayPort and a DisplayPort to HDMI converter. This is because video over DisplayPort to USB-C at the same frequency and resolution can be transmitted more efficiently than over HDMI.
DualMode DisplayPort connectors are capable of acting as HDMI connectors with a simple passive adapter (it converts 3.3V to 5V). Conventional DisplayPort connectors cannot do this and require an active HDMI adapter. I do not know any other differences between these two types of DisplayPort.
Bandwidth Tradeoffs: It’s All About Bands
The 24-pin USB-C connector is the key to understanding.
USB-C connectors have four differential different pairs, or “lanes”, for high speed data transfer. There is also a fifth pair, D and D-, transferring data in the old USB 2.0 style.
Let’s see what happens when DisplayPort is added to this heap:
USB 3.1 Gen 2 uses only two of the four lanes, as shown in the top two rows of the table. The other two are wasted (USB 3.2 will use them). These two bands can be converted to support the native DisplayPort signal using what is called DisplayPort Alternate Mode. this is shown in the middle lines. In this case, the USB-C connector acts as a different DisplayPort connector with additional wires for USB data. The performance of USB 3.1 does not lose. To a computer and an external monitor, it looks exactly like a normal DisplayPort connection.
Dual DisplayPort lanes provide ample bandwidth for one external monitor up to 4K / 30Hz resolution. It’s fine for movies, but working with Windows or MacOS desktops at 30Hz is cruel. To maintain a refresh rate of 60 Hz, you need to reduce the resolution to 2K.
If you need 4K 60Hz, 5K, or multiple external monitors, you’ll need to use DisplayPort Alternate Mode with all four lanes for DisplayPort data transmission, as shown in the bottom lines of the table. To a computer and an external monitor, this still looks like a normal DisplayPort connection. However, there are no more lanes for USB 3.1 data. All that remains is the old D / D- pair, providing slow USB 2.0 data. This means that no USB-C hub using this technology to transfer 4K 60 Hz video can have USB 3.1 ports.
It is also possible to support external displays with DisplayPort without using dedicated lanes for DisplayPort Alternate Mode, and there are two different approaches for this. If your computer’s USB-C port has Thunderbolt 3 support, then DisplayPort data can be transferred within Thunderbolt data. Then the video data becomes another type of data layouts, compressed along with everything else. Thunderbolt 3 has enough bandwidth to support multiple 4K60 connections this way, leaving room for USB 3.1 data.
That’s cool, but Thunderbolt 3 hubs are expensive and your computer needs to have Thunderbolt 3 support, which many don’t. It also looks different for a computer. unlike DisplayPort Alternate Mode, there are no native DisplayPort signals and no direct connection to the computer GPU. I don’t know if there is a video processing delay because of this, or if it is all magically processed in the chipset without losing speed. I guess there is no loss.
So what are our options?
With all of the above, we can categorize USB-C hubs into four categories based on how they handle video. Here are examples from each category.
