Remote access to CCTV cameras can be implemented in the following options:

Coaxial cable, twisted pair and fiber optic are used as data transmission media. The first two options, even without the use of various signal amplifiers, will be able to provide high-quality images at a distance of no more than 100 m.

If you use analog high-definition cameras (AHD, HD-TVI or HD-CVI technologies), then the transmission range of a high-quality signal over a coaxial cable will increase up to 500 m, and with the use of amplifiers over twisted pair up to 3-4 km.

These methods are suitable for medium to large CCTV systems with tens to hundreds of video cameras.

Remote video surveillance via the Internet will be useful, first of all, to individuals. This will allow you to control employees of a small enterprise, a summer cottage, a garage, an apartment, etc.

At the same time, IP video surveillance cameras are most often used, which provide a wider range of functions and network settings.

It is allowed to use analog cameras, but in this case, to obtain remote access, you need network equipment, which is a router or video recorder.


The previous methods were good if you need to connect one CCTV camera, while it occupies the Internet line provided by the provider. It is unlikely that an ordinary user will conclude an additional contract for the provision of Internet services to obtain remote access to one CCTV camera for an office or apartment.

This connection method is suitable when using ip-video cameras in the amount of 2-5 pcs. In this case, a dedicated ip-address is assigned to the router itself, which forms its own local subnet, which includes all video cameras, each with its own local ip-address.

The configuration is performed in the following sequence:

The router connects to the PC via the rg45 port. In the address bar of the browser, the IP address is typed, and then in the window that appears, the login and password. This data can be found on the packaging or in those documentation of the router.

We go to the section “Routing” or “Virtual Server” (different manufacturers call it differently) and create rules for forwarding external requests for each video camera.

In the line of the ip-address we write the local IP address of the video camera, for example, [] and assign it the external port 8087. This rule will redirect the request to the internal port 80 of this particular IP video camera. The next device is assigned port 8087, and so on.

We connect all IP cameras in turn to the PC. And we register static local ip-addresses, which were previously registered in the router. The port either remains by default 80 or is assigned manually. We also register a unique username and password (be the same for all cameras).

All camcorders are connected to the router via an rj45 cable connection or a WI-FI channel.

Allows not only to view information coming directly online, but also to remotely work with the archive. Camcorders and a router are configured in the same way as in the previous paragraph. To configure the DVR, almost the same steps are performed.

In the case of connecting several video devices and using a wired or WI-FI router, you need to make a more careful configuration.

Assigning its own internal IP to each camera is a mandatory procedure; for this, these addresses are explicitly registered in the modem settings. In addition, in order to view surveillance cameras via the Internet, you must specify the external port number for each video device.
