SJCAM SJ8 PRO: full review
SJCAM is on fire again. In 2018, the company presented to the public three versions of its latest camera: AIR, PLUS and PRO. Today we will dwell on a detailed examination of the most advanced of them. SJ8 PRO. This, by the way, is the first camera from SJCAM that can record in 4K resolution at 60 frames per second. So is its closest competitor, the GoPro Hero 5. How does it live up to expectations and is it a “GoPro killer”? Let’s try to find out.
Unpacking
The camera is sold in two different configurations: “minimum” and “full”. At the minimum, you can find only the camera, cable and manual. The complete one contains everything that is in the minimal, plus a bunch of accessories. A box full of various mountings and other optional items. This is common enough for SJCAM, but now you have a choice if you suddenly have accessories from previous models.
Design
The design of the SJ8 PRO does not differ so much from the appearance of second-hand cameras. But if you take a closer look, you can feel how far the case materials are from being called cheap. All surfaces are covered with a rubber-like material, which contributes to a better grip. The buttons are backlit and look incredibly cool.
Screen
SJ8 PRO has two screens. One in front. Classic LCD display, and one on the back. Sensory. Note that the latter works just fine. Just like the display on a smartphone.
The touchscreen function is very useful. You can enter the desired setting much faster than if you select it with the buttons. In addition, it should be said about the menu, which is extremely intuitive and NOT overloaded with details. Sometimes the interface can slow down if you suddenly want to change any option during shooting. It all depends on which one, so we would not write such behavior as an unambiguous minus.
Microphone
Another feature of the camera is the dual microphone. One is located at the front and one at the side. This, in theory, should provide good sound quality. We will check this point a little later.
USB-C port
There is a USB-C port on the same side as the microphone. What can you say? Finally, the SJCAM camera has a Type-C connector! Now you can say goodbye to the times when you had to grope for the correct position of the plug to insert it into the camera.
This connector has two sides. On the one hand, it has become more convenient; with another. There are still many devices with microUSB connectors and, accordingly, you probably have a small pile of THESE cables lying around somewhere for future use. Type-C cable is not yet so widespread, so it is better NOT to forget to take it with you.
Memory card
There is a tripod mounting hole at the bottom of the camera. The hole diameter is standard. A quarter inch. Nearby is the cover of the battery compartment and memory card. To be honest, this neighborhood is a little embarrassing. The compartment will be hot enough when shooting and charging.
Menus and settings
The camera menu is well done. With the touchscreen SJCAM has created one of the most intuitive menus found in action cameras. Everything you need is here. Except for one function. Flip the picture. If you suddenly want to put the camera upside down, then you will have to manually turn the picture in the video editor. However, in the latest firmware update this was fixed, and the function appeared.
To be honest, it’s hard to compare this camera to other models. NOT because it is technically difficult, but because after long hours of testing, it was discovered that the SJ8 PRO was created primarily for 4K shooting, but not for other resolutions. It’s strange, but let’s try to explain.
We have always argued that the most commonly used resolution in action cameras. It’s 1080p at 60fps. SJCAM does not think so and throws all its strength at 4K and simply forgets about the rest of the permissions. This is easy to prove because at 1080p the bitrate is only 18 Mbps. Bitrate. It is, simply put, the amount of detail a video contains. For comparison, the usual bitrate on the second cameras is about 30 Mbps. Therefore, the SJ8 PRO produces a slightly distorted picture at this resolution.
On the other hand, when shooting in 4K at 30 frames per second, the bit rate rises to 60 Mbps, and if you shoot in the same resolution at 60 frames per second, it is as much as 100 Mbps. To be honest, this is the first time we’ve seen such a bitrate. And this is perhaps the best difference between a normal camera and a good camera.

The difference is quite obvious. 4K shooting with this camera has reached a new level compared to second-hand accessories, and there is no doubt about it.
However, these are probably software problems, and, most likely, they will be solved in the near future with the release of new firmware. With great hardware, the SJ8 PRO can be a great GoPro Hero 6 Alternative.
Also worth mentioning is the gyroscope stabilization. We were very surprised at how well it works. We can say that the need for a separate stabilizer has practically disappeared!
The color gamut in the captured video is excellent coverage and high accuracy. At night, the camera shows its full potential. With the ISO setting down to 6400, the camera is able to catch every ray of light in the field of view. In this case, the color rendition, again, does not suffer. The matrix of the apparatus. This is a definite plus.
Audio
On its website, SJCAM positions its camera as capable of recording even a concert. But. There are no miracles.
Perhaps this is not what we expected.
On the other hand, the sound is quite acceptable at normal volume. It can be summarized that the camera is quite useful for recording speech, but for music. No.
According to video tests, you might think that the photos will be fine. Fortunately, the theory has been confirmed by practice. The SJ8 PRO is capable of pretty good shots. Of course, she is far from digital cameras, but the photographs will surely appeal to you.
Battery
The battery’s survival rate can be called extraordinary. It has a capacity of 1200 mAh, which is 150-200 mAh more than most competitors. At 4K resolution and 60 fps, a full charge will last for 90 minutes, at 1080p and 60 fps. For 118 minutes, and at 1080p and 30 fps. 135 minutes. Fully discharged battery is charged for 130 minutes.
Verdict
The SJ8 Pro is generally a good camera. It could be great, but the firmware needs some work (at the time of this writing). The SJ8 PRO boasts good picture quality and impressive battery life, but the audio quality could have been better. However, we will still recommend it to you, because it is a really good device. With the release of new firmware versions, it will turn into a real beast.

SJCAM SJ8 Air
