OUTDOOR VIDEO SURVEILLANCE
Outdoor video surveillance is the most effective solution for ensuring the security of adjacent territories of various categories of objects.
Correctly installed cameras guarantee excellent visibility regardless of the time of day and weather factors.
However, the specifics of outdoor surveillance imposes increased demands on the quality of the technical solutions used.
The main tasks of such systems include:
- control and assessment of the current situation in the area adjacent to the protected object;
- object security (including timely detection of criminal actions);
- detection of dangerous situations;
- identification of objects (identification of persons located on the territory, fixation of vehicle license plates);
- visual check of the correctness of operation of additional security subsystems (burglar alarms);
- other tasks, including non-standard ones (video surveillance of playgrounds, etc.).
For the correct choice of equipment used in the outdoor video surveillance system, an analysis of the security object is carried out, guided by the priority areas:
- protection of housing, objects;
- protection of life and health.
Additionally, they take into account the economic component. the choice of optimal equipment in a suitable price category.
For example, outdoor video surveillance for a private house is optimized taking into account the presence of a security service or its absence (installation of additional monitors for direct observation by a full-time operator).
As a rule, first of all, they pay attention to video cameras for outdoor surveillance and their compliance with the assigned tasks.
OUTDOOR SURVEILLANCE CAMERAS
There is a clear trend towards universalization of models in the market of cameras for outdoor video surveillance. In particular, most outdoor cameras are equipped with additional infrared illumination for operation at night.
But the differences in the form factor of video cameras, the technical characteristics of individual modules and additional nuances of the operation of the video surveillance system remain unchanged.
Common execution of video cameras:
- case. the most common models are often equipped with additional equipment for turning to a given angle;
- Dome cameras. structurally made in the form of a ball or hemisphere, which are fixed on the base (optimal form factor for controlled cameras).
The coverage area of the camera lens (angle of view) is an important indicator for outdoor video surveillance. To monitor large areas of the adjacent territory, it is necessary to use wide-angle video cameras. Narrow-angle are used for monitoring confined spaces (driveways, wickets) and are ideal for object identification systems.
In a full-fledged outdoor video surveillance system, combinations of video cameras with different viewing angles are used.
Automatic iris control.
For outdoor cameras, the ARA function (automatic iris adjustment) is required. When the light intensity changes, the iris automatically closes (bright light) or opens (dark time of day) for optimal image quality.
For low-cost video surveillance, it is allowed to use cameras without DGS (if possible losses from a security system failure are less than the cost of installing better equipment).
Function HLC. High Light Compensation (compensation of bright light) allows at the software level to mask excessively bright areas of the resulting image, replacing them with gray. Thus, the best display of the object is achieved in difficult conditions, for example, recognition of the license plate of a car, the headlights of which are directed directly into the camera lens.
For normal operation of the HLC function at night, it is necessary to correctly position the external lighting sources of the surrounding area (if any).
Until recently, for outdoor video surveillance, mainly monochrome video cameras were used, characterized by high image quality at night and at dusk. informative color video cameras are less sensitive, and in the dark, the image deteriorates significantly.
But most of the well-known manufacturers in the field of video surveillance systems offer a balanced solution. day / night cameras that function normally regardless of the time of day.
Infrared illumination is used for normal camcorder operation in low light conditions. There are two proven solutions. the installation of external IR illuminators, and the integration of the backlight into the camera body. The first option is usually used for specialized security systems of the highest quality.
Integrated backlighting eliminates complex set-up and offers a rational price / performance ratio. State-of-the-art super-bright LEDs used in IR camera illumination ensure high-quality images in all conditions.
Wireless outdoor cameras. relevance and benefits.
Traditional outdoor video surveillance systems are usually associated with wired cameras. But the widespread adoption of networking technologies is gradually shifting priorities in favor of systems based on wireless solutions. Modern wireless outdoor video surveillance cameras have a number of advantages:
- convenient operation of the system;
- quick installation and setup;
- the ability to install anywhere;
- simple implementation of cloud video surveillance system.
Security experts believe that wireless solutions, despite their higher cost, will soon occupy a significant share of the outdoor video surveillance market. It is especially important to use them at facilities where the installation of traditional systems (wired cameras) is impossible or hindered by external factors.
INSTALLATION OF OUTDOOR VIDEO SURVEILLANCE
Installation of outdoor video surveillance cameras is carried out according to the developed project. It is very important to choose the right angle of view to eliminate “blind spots”. Additionally, external factors are taken into account, which determine the specifics of the operation of outdoor video cameras in the general concept of the security system.
QCAM/AMCREST IP3M952E IP66 POE Security Camera | Unboxing & How to Install
Outdoor camera manufacturers pay special attention to climatic protection, which ensures the normal functioning of the equipment. In particular, the cameras are made in a dust and moisture proof housing. Additionally, protection against temperature extremes is provided (thermal casing).
Universal models of video cameras function normally in the range from 50 ° C to. 60 ° C. Also, additional visors are installed above the video cameras (protection from icicles, melted snow). Particular attention is paid to the strength of the fasteners (brackets are made of metal, and are fixed to the wall with anchor bolts). When installing on poles, special fastening systems are used.
The design of the video camera must provide reliable protection against external mechanical influences, including deliberate damage to the video camera by an intruder. The usual practice of installing the camera at a height of 2 m does not give sufficient guarantees, therefore, manufacturers additionally equip the camera with an shock-resistant housing made of metal alloys or polycarbonate (a budget option).
Special attention is paid to the protection of signal lines and power circuits (hidden laying of communications is recommended).
Correct installation of outdoor video surveillance cameras provides for the use of special lightning protection devices to prevent interruptions in the operation of the system caused by atmospheric interference.
The lightning protection system excludes the failure of equipment elements as a result of electromagnetic interference. Protection is installed on signal lines, power circuits and control circuits (PTZ cameras).
Installation of outdoor surveillance in accordance with the developed standards, allows you to ensure the proper effectiveness of the security system.
You also need to pay attention to the additional recommendations of the manufacturer of the cameras to be installed.

The cost of video cameras and other equipment in the entrance
The price for video surveillance at the entrance is calculated separately for each object. The main items of expenditure here will be the purchase of video recording equipment and work on its installation. The total amount is influenced by:
- Number of observation points (you can install one camera at the entrance, you can equip each floor with cameras, install video surveillance on the staircase, install an additional observation point in the elevator, etc.).
- Required recording quality.
- The need to protect cameras, recorders and cables from vandalism or unauthorized access.
- The presence of outdoor cameras (they record everything that happens in front of the entrance to the entrance).
After purchasing the equipment in accordance with the developed project, the foremen of the GSK company mount it, lay the wires (hidden or open), and also install the server part (video recorders and hard drives for storing information). After testing the system, we definitely conduct training for the personnel working with the equipment. this is also included in the overall estimate.
You can calculate how much video surveillance at the entrance costs using the data from the price list given here. For typical objects, we have developed ready-made solutions that allow, at low cost, to provide effective fixation of everything that happens in the house or in front of it.

How to install video surveillance at the entrance in compliance with the law?
When installing a video surveillance camera in an entrance or installing an integrated security system, you need to comply with legal formalities. The reason is simple: by performing such work without the consent of other residents, you will actually violate their right to privacy. This could be the basis for legal action.
How to Install a PoE Surveillance Camera
- When installing a camera on a staircase, you must obtain permission from all floor neighbors (in writing).
- When installing an integrated video recording system, permits are required from all residents of the house.
- At the entrance to the staircase, next to the elevator call buttons and on the floors, signs must be placed that warn of ongoing video surveillance.
Compliance with these rules allows you to avoid claims and ensure the legality of the installation of equipment for video recording.
SELECTING A LOCATION
To facilitate installation, the installation of wired video cameras on the walls of houses is preferable to separately located structures (poles and supports). This simplifies the laying of cable lines (no need for the use of “air”).
In case of rejection of wires (installation of WI-FI CCTV cameras), you need to take care of supplying the supply voltage to them. In this case, placement on a power transmission tower turns out to be justified.
It is worth noting that the installation of IP cameras on the street requires additional measures:
- installation of network switches every 100 meters of the route;
- ensuring their climate protection.
As a rule, such problems arise when equipment with video surveillance of extended perimeters or large areas.
INSTALLING CCTV CAMERAS
To properly install a CCTV camera, you need to fulfill several requirements regarding the choice:
- options and characteristics;
- location.
If you do not know what to look for when purchasing a camcorder, then read this material. Upon successful completion of this stage, proceed to the selection of the installation site.
It is worth noting that in this case, you have to comply with some conflicting requirements. Often, where there is an optimal view, there is a natural (sun) or artificial light source.
In the second case, it is easier to find a solution. in the extreme case, the luminaire is reinstalled. As for the first option, we are physically powerless to change something. In addition, you may simply not have all the factors, such as changing the position of the sun depending on the time of day or year.
Therefore, it is necessary to use software and hardware solutions to improve the image quality. One of them is backlight compensation (see). The installation of light-shielding visors partially solves the problem, but, I repeat, if there is no illumination in the summer, it is not a fact that it will not appear in the winter.
Suppose that such factors are foreseen and resolved, after which it remains to put a video surveillance camera in the chosen place. In this case, the installation height is critical, which is determined by the tasks facing the system:
- general review;
- identification of a person;
- control over his actions, etc.
Naturally, the camera’s angle of view should provide the required degree of detail. But here such factors come into play:
- finding foreign objects between the video camera and the object of observation;
- the possibility of deliberate damage to the video control device.
When installing an internal video surveillance system, in most cases, the use of ceiling-mounted dome cameras helps. This solves both of these problems.
If it is necessary to place video cameras at a height of 1.5-2 meters, choose vandal-proof or HIDDEN designs.
INSTALLATION OF OUTDOOR CAMERAS
Installation of outdoor video cameras requires ensuring their operation under variable lighting conditions. These are not only the mentioned flares, but:
- daily changes in light levels;
- possible neighborhoods in the scene of observation of areas sharply differing in the level of illumination.
In the first case, the use of an electronic shutter or automatic iris control (ARA) is required. The latter is preferable. The second annoyance is partially compensated by the WDR option. Also, do not neglect the automatic gain control (AGC) function.
If, despite all the options and capabilities of the video camera to “pull” the image, the required quality cannot be achieved, you will have to install two television cameras monitoring one area from two angles. However, this measure is rarely used.
The reliability of the fastening must ensure the complete absence of vibrations of the video camera. Otherwise we will get a “shaky” image. It is impossible to compensate for this defect.
When installing equipment on the walls of houses, there is a danger of damage to it by icicles falling from the roof, snow layers. This is especially true when mounting case devices on brackets.
In addition, when choosing for outdoor placement of box cameras, pay attention to the shape of the housing. The cylinder better prevents the accumulation of moisture, as a result. freezing in the winter. And there will be moisture. the camera heats up, the snow melts, flows down and freezes.
As for the construct, there are two versions for outdoor installation:
- set: modular chamber. hermo (thermo) casing. assembled independently;
- factory assembled design.
The first allows more flexibility in choosing options and functionality, the second is easier and is recommended for self-installation to individuals. untrained.
For outdoor surveillance at night, illumination is required. The only question is efficiency. The infrared (IR) LEDs built into the camera do not always correspond to the parameters set by the manufacturer. For the most part, this applies to distances of more than 10 meters.
Before installing an outdoor camera with IR illumination, it is advisable to make sure how good the image is in low light conditions. Sometimes you have to install a separate infrared illuminator. Of course, this applies to areas that do not have sufficient night lighting with traditional lighting devices.
As for anti-vandal measures, they are always relevant for the street. If the installation of a video camera is carried out in a place where it can be damaged by improvised means or with bare hands, protection from this kind of encroachment is required.

INSTALLATION OF VIDEO SURVEILLANCE CAMERAS IN THE HOUSE OR AT THE COUNTRY
For private use and self-installation, analog AHD cameras are preferable. They practically do not require configuration, are unpretentious in operation, do not “hang” like IP equipment.
If it is necessary to organize video surveillance via the Internet, all modern video recorders have the technical capability of network connection.
The exception is situations when remote access to one TV camera is required. In this case, it is easier to use IP technologies, especially when working with cloud services.
Of course, if the use of wireless cameras is planned, then the “analog” is not very attractive here. This installation option is determined by:
- the desire to reduce the complexity of installation (sometimes trivial laziness);
- lack of technical ability to lay cable networks;
- unwillingness to have visible boxes, wires and other installation elements in the interior of the premises.
Everyone chooses for himself, but the wired connection will not “strain” the user too much. For outdoor installations, you can place the camcorders on the wall of the house and immediately pull the wire inside. In 90% of cases, no other options are required. In addition, removes the issue of catering.
Much has been written about this, including on this site using the links indicated earlier, so there is no point in repeating it. The only thing, for quite obvious reasons, it is advisable to arrange the CCTV cameras in such a way that the approaches to any of them are controlled by others.
Site materials are for informational purposes only and cannot be used as guidelines and official documents.
INSTALLING OUTDOOR VIDEO SURVEILLANCE CAMERAS
Installation of CCTV cameras on the street requires compliance with certain rules and requirements. Installation of an outdoor video surveillance camera should provide protection against:
- unfavorable climatic conditions;
- mechanical damage, including acts of vandalism.
Most often, box-type video cameras are used for outdoor installation. They are attached to the supporting structure on a bracket, which should provide at least two degrees of freedom for adjusting the camera’s viewing direction: in the horizontal and vertical planes (Fig. 1).
In addition, the bracket must have sufficient rigidity to withstand wind and other loads on the outdoor camera that occur during its operation.
As a rule, outdoor cameras are installed on the outside of the walls of buildings, while there is a risk of damage to them by icicles falling from the roof, pieces of ice and snow.
The optimal solution to this problem is to install video cameras under the protection of protruding elements of the building structure. canopies, cornices, projections. The use of additional outrigger brackets in most cases does not solve the problem.
If it is impossible to provide this kind of protection, it is worth installing an outdoor dome video camera. Its installation can be done directly on the wall of the building. The small size and spherical shape of the case will most likely protect the device from the effects of the above external factors.
Speaking about mechanical protection, one should not forget about ensuring vandal resistance (preventing people from intentionally damaging the video camera). I’ll tell you right away. installing an anti-vandal camera on the street will not solve the problem 100%.
You should be especially careful about the proposals of anti-vandal cameras on the bracket. By definition, there can be no such. Some protection of the video surveillance system from acts of vandalism can be provided by a dome camera in a special metal case.
The ideal option is to install the camera out of the reach of vandals. True, at the same time, it must provide the required viewing area and be available for maintenance.
In practice, it is not always possible to comply with all these requirements, but it is imperative to minimize the listed risks. The above applies equally to both analog and outdoor IP cameras.
INSTALLATION OF STREET CAMERAS
When worrying about fastening and mechanical protection, do not forget about electrical work. Installation and connection of signal and power circuits also has its own subtleties and nuances.
To begin with, if the camera is placed in a hermetic box during installation work, then it is better to do this in a dry room with a positive temperature. Otherwise, condensation and related troubles may appear inside.
You should also carry out a thorough sealing of all terminals and collapsible parts of the case. If there are connectors for connecting wires and cables outside the CCTV camera housing, they must be placed in a separate sealed box or have a corresponding design.
Installation of analog and IP cameras often involves the installation of additional equipment:
- switches (for IP video surveillance);
- transceivers (for transmitting an analog signal over a twisted pair);
- power supplies.
The requirements for their installation are similar to those for the installation of outdoor video cameras.
In addition, it is necessary to ensure the protection of CCTV cameras from induced electrical atmospheric and industrial noise.
Compliance with the listed recommendations will improve the quality of installation and the reliability of the outdoor video surveillance system.
