How to find out how many times a MacBook Pro or MacBook Air has been charged

The life of people is measured in years, the life of Apple laptops is measured in recharge cycles. The battery has a finite resource, sooner or later it will have to be changed. therefore, knowing how much time is left before the glorious death of the battery will not interfere with any owner of the MacBook Air / Pro.

When deciding on the battery life, two points matter:

  • Where to see the current data on the number of over-discharge cycles of the MacBook battery and
  • How many overdischarges can it withstand according to Apple engineers.

How many cycles does my MacBook battery last??

Until 2009, MacBooks were equipped with different batteries. for 300, 500 or 1,000 recharges. Then Apple started putting batteries on its laptops for 1,000 recharges. A special “accumulator” table from Apple will help you navigate:

How to see the number of times your laptop battery has been charged on Windows and Mac

As you probably know, batteries are consumables. Hopefully, your laptop battery will last for several years, its performance degrades over time with use. This means that the battery does not last as long, even at 100% charge.

To quantify how much you’ve used your device’s battery, you can check the battery cycles. We show you how to calculate the battery cycle on your Windows laptop or MacBook.

Battery cycle refers to one complete discharge of the battery from 100 percent to zero percent. It doesn’t have to happen right away. For example, if your laptop battery runs out of 100 to 50 percent, you charge it back to 100 percent and let it drop back to 50 percent, which counts as one cycle.

The fewer your laptop’s battery cycles, the healthier its battery. In a healthy battery, the charge level is close to the factory maximum, compared to a heavily discharged battery.

Fortunately, both Windows and macOS provide you with an easy way to check your battery cycle count. If you’re wondering how much you’ve used your battery over the years, or want to check a used car before you buy it, here’s how to check your cycle counter.

How to Check MacBook Pro Battery Health / Cycle Count / Charge Capacity (mAh)

On a Windows laptop, you can check the battery cycles with a quick command prompt. To open it, right-click the Start button (or press Win X) and select Command Prompt or Windows PowerShell from the menu that appears.

When you see the command line, enter this command:

Then go to your user folder and find the battery-report.html file in this location:

Double click this file and it should open in your default browser. Take a look at the Installed Batteries section to see the calculated capacity and full charge capacity.

Estimated capacity is the original maximum charge, and full capacity is how much charge your laptop can hold now. The cycle counter shows how many times the battery has been fully charged. If the two numbers are close enough, then you have a healthy battery.

Below you will see some information on recent battery usage that may help if you need to troubleshoot any issues. For more information, check out Windows Apps to analyze battery life.

To view the battery cycle counter on your MacBook, click the Apple menu in the upper left corner and choose About This Mac. In the window that appears, click the System report button. to see more information in a new window.

Under the Hardware heading on the left, click the Power section. Then in the “Health Information” section you will see an entry “Cycle counter” with the number of cycles at the moment.

macOS also displays the Condition here. If your battery is still low, you will see Normal here. When the battery enters the replacement area, “Recommended services” is displayed.

For more information about your Mac’s battery, consider installing an app to manage your Mac’s battery life. They show the current and original maximum charge, and in some cases help to maintain the health of the battery over time.

Please be aware that macOS Catalina 10.15.5 includes a new battery health management feature that can automatically lower the maximum battery capacity at specific times to keep it running longer.

See the Apple Battery Cycle Meter page for information on how long to run on a battery. Most modern MacBooks are rated for 1000 cycles.

Now you know how to check if your laptop battery is almost empty. Don’t worry about battery cycles; Using the battery is a natural part of working with a laptop. In many cases, you can replace the battery for a reasonable charge and it still works after a certain number of cycles.

At the same time, performing basic actions such as lowering the brightness will help reduce the amount of power your laptop is using by reducing the number of battery cycles.

Where to see the number of MacBook charge discharge cycles

You can clearly see how to see the number of charging cycles in a MacBook in the video below.

Laptop battery report in Windows 10

In Windows 10 (however, in 8-ke this feature is also present) there is a way to get a report with information on the status and use of the laptop or tablet battery. the type of battery, the design and actual capacity when fully charged, the number of charging cycles, as well as to see graphs and tables of using the device from battery and from the mains, change in capacity during the last month.

This short tutorial explains how to do it and what the data in the battery report represents (since even in the Russian version of Windows 10, the information is presented in English). See also: What to do if your laptop won’t charge.

It should be noted that full information can be seen only on laptops and tablets with supported hardware and original chipset drivers installed. For devices originally released with Windows 7, as well as without the necessary drivers, the method may not work or give incomplete information (as happened with me. incomplete information on one and lack of information on the second old laptop).

    Generating a battery health report

In order to create a report on the battery of a computer or laptop, run the command line as administrator (in Windows 10, the easiest way to do this is to use the right-click menu on the “Start” button).

After that enter the command powercfg.batteryreport (possibly writing powercfg / batteryreport) and press Enter. For Windows 7, you can use the powercfg / energy command (moreover, it can also be used in Windows 10, 8 if the battery report does not provide the necessary information).

If everything went well, you will see a message stating that “The battery life report is saved in the C: \ Windows \ system32 \ battery-report.html folder.”.

Go to the C: \ Windows \ system32 \ folder and open the battery-report.html file with any browser (though on one of my computers the file refused to open in Chrome for some reason, I had to use Microsoft Edge, and on the other. without problems).

View the battery report of your Windows 10 and 8 laptop or tablet

Note: As noted above, the information on my laptop is incomplete. If you have newer hardware and have all the drivers, you will also see the information that is missing in the screenshots provided.

At the top of the report, after the information about the laptop or tablet, the installed system and the BIOS version, in the Installed Battery section, you will see the following important information:

    view, macbook, charge, cycles
    • Manufacturer. battery manufacturer.
    • Chemistry. battery type.
    • Design Capacity. initial capacity.
    • Full Charge Capacity. current capacity when fully charged.
    • Cycle Count. the number of recharge cycles.

The Recent Usage and Battery Usage sections present battery usage data for the last three days, including remaining capacity and consumption graph.

The Usage History section in a tabular form displays data on the use of the device from the battery (Battery Duration) and the mains (AC Duration).

The Battery Capacity History section provides information on the change in battery capacity over the past month. The data may not be entirely accurate (for example, on some days, the current capacity may “increase”).

The Battery Life Estimates section displays information about the estimated operating time of the device when fully charged in the active state and in connected standby mode (as well as information about such time with the original battery capacity in the At Design Capacity column).

The last item in the report. Since OS Install displays information about the expected system battery life, calculated based on the use of a laptop or tablet since installing Windows 10 or 8 (not in the last 30 days).

What is it for? For example, to analyze the situation and capacity, if the laptop suddenly began to discharge quickly. Or, in order to find out how “charged” the battery is when buying a used laptop or tablet (or a device from a storefront). I hope some of the readers find the information useful.

Hello Dmitry, but you can remove the battery and use a laptop directly from the network at home?

Yes, you can. over, if you plan, conditionally, a year to work with a laptop only at home from the network, then this may be justified from the point of view of battery safety. Pre-charge the battery by 80-90 percent (it is recommended to store it in this form). If you plan to shoot and set every day, then it’s not worth it, there will be no benefit from it.

IMHO, if only used for other needs! In general, it is more useful for what it is provided for. After buying a beech, after reading the tips for saving the battery, I also pulled it out, but before the first disconnection of the network, I had to reinstall the 7-ku and put the battery back. Since then, there have been no problems with the 7th, it has still been working for more than 4 years, although network outages occasionally happen. All the time I work from the mains, the battery works like a UPS on a stationary PC. I recently checked the battery like new. Probably will die of old age! zs Of course this applies to the 7-ke. 8 and 10 in this regard are not killed, but the hardware will still suffer (especially the HDD). Remember: Usually, saving on cheaper components can result in the loss of more expensive equipment.!

Chrome will open battery-report.html if you move it from the system32 folder to another folder such as your desktop. What is the reason I don’t understand.

How to check battery cycles in Macbooks (Mac OS X)

Apparently, with the fact that chrome works from the user and does not have access to system folders.

Hello Dmitry, and if the battery is not removable and you work mainly from the mains, what would you advise?

Hello. If the drivers for the chipset, power management and other system equipment are official (i.e. not from the Windows Update or driver pack, but from the laptop manufacturer’s website for this particular model), then I can advise you not to think about it (you can only update the BIOS if there are official updates), modern laptops take care of the battery and don’t do too much with it. see, for example, the screenshots in the article. this is an old Toshiba laptop that has been running on the network for 3 years (it practically does not turn off from the outlet at all). When it is extremely rare to use it autonomously, the battery behaves almost like a new one (I did not measure it, but in any case, I do not notice any significant decrease in the operating time compared to what it was when I bought it. all the same about 5 hours with the declared 7, it was the same before).

For Windows 7, the command is “POWERCFG / ENERGY”

I just searched for 7 and Google directed it here. Maybe someone else will look for

Excellent thank you. Is the report the same there (at least in terms of structure)? (there is simply nothing to check now)

The report is in Russian, almost the same about the battery, there are no graphs, errors, warnings and information are listed. Battery Details Battery Code Samsung Electronics Manufacturer Samsung Electronics Serial Number Chemical Composition LION Long Life 1 Estimated Capacity 48840 Last Full Charge 48840

Thanks, it came in handy, there are 7 on the laptop.

The nirsoft BatteryInfoView program can show: Battery capacity and wear in%, charge cycles, and also indicates the charge and discharge power, so you can see how the battery is used in resource-intensive applications. In principle, all this is sufficient and understandable for a simple user. Therefore, if anyone comes in handy, they can try this program.

How do you know the number of battery cycles since the beginning of using the laptop, and not since the installation of Windows? worth 10

As far as I know, cycles are counted not at the OS level, but at the battery level just. At the same time, if you are confused by the low number of charge-discharge cycles, then they are simply considered under certain conditions, as an example: “discharge by more than 50% and subsequent charge” = 1 cycle (for different devices in different ways).

It does not work for me. (Writes this: powercfg.batteryreport The operation failed. An unexpected error occurred (0x10d2): The library, drive or media is empty.
