Using GoPro as a Webcam
Chances are you already know that you can stream live to multIPle platforms and social media with GoPro cameras. and we hope you have mastered this skill by now. But if you want to unleash the potential of this action camera even further, here are some tIPs for using your GoPro as a webcam.

First, let’s talk about the important difference between GoPro and many cameras, flooding the market: it is a universal tool that can be used for action filming, for full-fledged creativity (for example, for filming), vlogging and broadcasting on social networks, as a recorder in a car and, finally, webcams. But users who purchase GoPro primarily for webinars often choose THESE devices for one simple but compelling reason: the picture quality of these cameras is noticeably higher, and the color rendition is incomparably better than standard webcams.
If you are a longtime fan of the brand, then you probably remember that in the HERO5 Black model it was quite simple to set up and use a GoPro as a webcam: you had to connect your computer to the camera’s access point, enter a special IP in the browser, and the image from the device was already on your PC. then only simple manIPulations with the software were required, and voila. you are on the air!
For models starting from HERO5 Black, the scheme of actions has changed somewhat, but in general, it remains the same simple. Below we have listed a list of additional accessories that you will need to create a broadcast, as well as detailed settings for connecting GoPro with popular conference services such as Zoom, WebEx and Skype.
Note: HERO8 Black can only be used as a webcam in tandem with a media module. MAX, Fusion and Session series models that have a built-in MicroHDMI port cannot be used as a webcam.
Prepare the necessary equIPment
- GoPro with MicroHDMI output for signal output;
- MicroHDMI-HDMI cable;
- Signal converter with HDMI-USB interface.
Pro tIP: You can choose any capture device you are used to working with, but we recommend Magewell and ELGato Cam Link 4K. With the help of them, you can broadcast in 1080p60 and higher quality, and with minimal signal delay.
This adapter is the key device that converts the image from the camera into the signal of the webcam.
- USB Type-C cable for charging GoPro power supply;
- Mount for easy camera attachment. We will consider the options below.
Choose a shooting angle and mount for your GoPro
The choice of mount for mounting an action camera will largely depend on your shooting angle. As a standard solution, we recommend choosing the Shorty monopod or the more convenient TrIPpler monopod with a pivoting head from PolarPro. If you prefer more creative options (after all, this is a GoPro, not a regular webcam!), We recommend that you opt for one of the following options:
- The Jaws Flex Clamp is a versatile mount useful if you need unusual angles, or if you’re training or teaching and it’s important for you to see what’s happening on the camera screen. Due to the fact that the mount can be bent at various angles and cling to many surfaces (table, monitor, table lamp), “jaws” are very common in the arsenal of accessories for fans of webcasts. In short, a must-have.
- Magnetic Swivel ClIP or SP Magnet Mount. thanks to the ability to hold GoPro on metal surfaces, renowned in motorists and service professionals. Do you want to broadcast the process of repairing your engine by attaching a camera to the inside of the hood? Then magnetic mounts are definitely your choice.!
- The Suction Cup is another universal mount that can be trailed on any flat surface, including vertical ones, such as window glass. In this case, the angle of inclination of the camera can be adjusted, and the mount can be rotated.
- Gooseneck Flexible Swivel Mount. Combine unlimited quantities with all of the above mounts for the longest, most flexible and versatile mount ever available. No hard-to-reach spots.
Select a service to broadcast
You can use your GoPro as a webcam on those conference services that allow you to choose a broadcasting tool. in your case, an action camera. Here are just a few of these services: Webex, Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Skype, Google Meetings, OBS, and Wirecast.
Set up your GoPro
- Turn on your GoPro;
- SwIPe down from the top edge of the screen and select “Options”;
- Scroll to the “Input / Output” item and select it;
- Select “HDMI Output” and then “Ether”.
- Choose a shooting angle and mount your GoPro;
- Open the side cover on the camera and connect the microHDMI cable;
- Connect the other end of the cable to the capture device;
- Plug the capture device into a USB port on your computer. If the computer has a USB 3.0 or higher port, it will be preferable;
- Connect your GoPro to a power source.
Option 1: configuring conference software.
- Skype: go to “Settings” “Sound” “Camera”;
- Webex: select the “Communication” icon in the drop-down menu, click “Select Camera“;
- Zoom: select the arrow next to Start / Stop Settings Select Camera;
- You can switch between two active GoPro cameras right during the broadcast by choosing the one you need in the drop-down menu when you click “Select Camera”.
Option 2: Setting up OBS or Similar Live Streaming Programs.
- Open StreamLabs OBS or another OBS and follow the instructions to add a signal source;
- For OBS, press “” in the source menu;
- Click “Capture Device”;
- Click “New” and name your signal source;
- Select your hardware from the dropdown menu (eg ELGato Cam Link 4K) and Click “OK”;
- The GoPro image should appear on your monitor.
Pro tIP: The GoPro is capable of streaming up to 1080p60 quality over HDMI, however most services are limited to 1080p30. Still, for the best image quality Take care of good lighting in the scene.
You are now ready to use your GoPro as a webcam!
iOS applications for conferences
Using IPhone as a webcam for a computer requires the installation of the corresponding application on the smartphone. It is worth launching this program and checking its performance, as well as the corresponding program (links below) on a Windows or Mac computer. Sometimes you can do without a computer at all. In this case, you need to use the familiar messenger applications.
If you want to use your webcam to make Skype calls, chat with colleagues on Zoom or Slack, or just chat with friends via WhatsApp or Viber, try downloading the appropriate IPhone app. These apps are specially designed for mobile devices, so they work great on a small screen.
If you want to use speakerphone with your IPhone, then you will need to purchase an inexpensive trIPod. There are quite a few smartphone trIPod mounts on the market that allow you to conveniently place any equIPment you have. Almost everything you need will allow you to carry out a high-quality spider trIPod, which you can install on almost any surface.
The main disadvantage of this arrangement is that you will be dependent on the IPhone microphone and speaker. Wireless headphones are the best way to solve this problem. The sound quality will be quite good, and it will be much easier for you to deal with the microphone so close to your face.
Of course, sometimes you have to work at the computer. In this case, there is little that can replace a separate webcam. Fortunately, the IPhone does a good job of playing the role of an alternative.
How to use IPhone as a webcam for your computer
Using the IPhone as a webcam will require a dedicated application to be installed on your phone and computer. Unfortunately, the IPhone does not support this feature out of the box, so you need third-party software to implement it.
We have tested several applications and read reviews on them. As a result, two options can be distinguished: EpocCam (for IPhone, IPad, Windows and Mac) and iVCam (for IPhone, IPad and Windows). Both products can be classified as premium with numerous free options, giving the opportunity to test the functionality of the program before purchasing it. Windows 7, 8 and 10 versions are supported.
In addition to Mac and PC versions, Epoccam also offers three versions of the IPhone application. The free version has limitations, the high-resolution version costs 599 rubles, and the version with 1490 rubles is intended for professionals who want to use multIPle cameras. Free version limited to 640×480 camera resolution and watermarking over the camera image.
Ivcam works almost identically, but only a Windows version is available. The IPhone app and related software are free to download. The free version of iVCam supports HD resolution, but also contains a watermark over the stream. After deleting this picture, you will have to pay 749 rubles using an in-app purchase.
Both of THESE apps allow you to use both wireless and USB connection. You can choose front or rear cameras, use different lenses and even turn on the flash on your device to better illuminate the scene. If you decide that you like any application and want to unlock the full version, then both options are inexpensive (599 rubles and 749 rubles) and average quality webcams.
In addition, there is an application called iCam (379 rubles). Unfortunately, you will NOT be able to test it before purchasing. The program is also BASED on UPnP for wireless connection, which may NOT work with all routers. Another solution. NDI | HX Camera, Free App for Producers. However, this program may seem daunting to most users.
Whichever application you choose, you will need to leave it running and open on the IPhone screen, which will act as a webcam. After installing the application and setting up the IPhone, you will need to go to the conferencing application settings on the computer, where you need to select the virtual webcam as the source device.
How to use IPhone as a webcam for your computer
A good webcam can be quite expensive, and it may simply not be at hand at the right time. And the quality of the camera in such a device is likely to be worse than in your IPhone. Why NOT use your smartphone as a webcam for communication? And it’s really easy to do.
TIPs for Using IPhone as a Webcam on Computer
A wired connection will always be better than a wireless one. If you want the most reliable webcam solution, please turn off wireless and select USB connection. Both apps we selected support USB connection. If you are not walking around the house while chatting, using Wi-Fi in this case does not make much sense.
If you want to use your IPhone as a webcam, you’ll also need a stationary positioning method. The best solution is a smartphone trIPod or an existing standard trIPod.
The aforementioned universal spider trIPods are perfect for this because you can mount them almost anywhere.
In case you already have a trIPod, but only a smartphone mount is missing, pay attention to this option.
Both apps allow you to use a rear view camera, which you should definitely use. Not only can you use a flash when needed, but the IPhone cameras on the back are vastly superior to the selfie camera.
You can use EpocCam and iVCam to capture audio as well, but this is NOT the best idea. Headphones are a nice accessory, but a quality desktop microphone will sound 10 times better. We advise you to adjust the lighting (even with a table lamp) before the call to make sure that your face does NOT appear too dark (detail).
Using your IPhone as a webcam will drain your battery. If you are NOT using a USB connection (which also charges your phone while chatting), then make sure your smartphone is plugged into a power outlet.
How to use Xiaomi Yi as a WEB camera
The Chinese company presented to the market an interesting camera that allows you to shoot in HD quality, and all its control is done remotely, through a special application for the mobile. Thanks to the built-in microphone and speaker, the camera can be used for communication. Let’s understand the advantages and disadvantages of the device.
Xiaomi Yi Camera
How to connect Xiaomi YI as a WEB camera
First you need to download the mobile application. To do this, you need to visit the MIUI fan forum, it is there that there is its English version. Also, you need a company account, which will be used in the future. On the smartphone, you need to allow the installation of programs from third-party sources.
After installing the program, a window with various authorization methods will appear. We are only interested in using the Xiaomi account, hardly anyone uses the social networks listed there. You can also register an account in the app, you need an email address for it.
Upon completion of registration, the application will ask you to turn on the camera and connect it to a power source. After the yellow indicator lights up on it, they will call the Next button. Next, you need to let the camera scan the QR code that appeared on the screen. After all this, a screen appears with the name of the camera, as well as the name of the wireless network used by the smartphone and camera. Enter the password to access the network and click Next.
The connection process itself is very exciting, since the devices may NOT sync the first time, after which you will have to tinker with the settings. In our case, there were no problems.
In the connection establishment mode, the LED indicator blinks yellow, and then blue. When the camera is fully operational, it will glow solid blue. All this time, a pleasant female voice in Chinese will notify about some events, or greet you, there is no translation of the speech on the network.
The camera is small, compact, has a nice design, allows you to remotely monitor the situation in good quality. The only requirement for using the camera is a wireless network. Such a camera can be used in different ways, for example, as a nanny for looking after children or the elderly, to control pets, or as an intercom (the built-in speaker and microphone fully implement this function). Also, the advantage is the recording of clIPs on a memory card, allowing you to quickly change it to another, in case of lack of space.

– Use HP in real time
To ensure satisfactory results, use your mobile phone in real time to see the point of view in real time. Because the small shape does not allow you to see more of the screen.
– Use the best lighting
Shine. The most important element in the world of images and graphics. To get natural light, there are two times that are ideal enough to get the best images, namely morning and evening. When the sun is still low, the harsh shadows are certainly lessened so that more cinematic moments can be obtained. And avoid shooting in cloudy weather, because the lack of sunlight can make your photos both flat and uninteresting.
– Use a different angle of taking
Small form. One of the advantages of an action camera, including a GoPro. Facilitate its placement anywhere. Therefore, DO NOT take pictures at a normal angle. You can use your imagination to accept angles that no one ever thought.
– Keep your lens clean
First of all, make sure your GoPro lens is clean, free of dust or fingerprints. Because it will affect the overall results. Also when recording in water, try cleaning the lens and wait for it to dry, then start recording.
How to take photos with GoPro
Image through a reliable view
It takes good setup and tricks to create an interesting photo or from a GoPro. Thus, the results obtained will be satisfactory Not only for us, but also for those who see it. Well, to get good results, here are some tIPs to follow:
How to use your GoPro in the water
Image via theverge
For travelers, an action camera GoPro. One of the required devices. Because one of the advantages of the stock is that it can be used for recording in any conditions, including in water. When using your GoPro in the water, you can use the GoPro Accessories help as a monopod. This must reach a recording angle that cannot be achieved manually. Or, to put it simply, you can place the GoPro in an unusual place, such as next to a mask (diving goggles). So you don’t need to hold your GoPro anymore.
Using the GoPro Series
First time user to use GoPro camera action may have difficulty connecting to GoPro app. Therefore, it is not possible to transfer files and pictures. Also, the GoPro has several different versions of the camera, so the way to connect the camera is slightly different as well.
It’s actually very easy to connect your GoPro to the app. Here are some ways to connect or connect your GoPro to the GoPro App to take complete control of your GoPro.
How to use a GoPro without Wi-Fi
Before purchasing a GoPro action camera, make sure you can clearly see the specifications. Because there is a GoPro that doesn’t have a Wi-Fi connection. GoPro with Wi-Fi lets you use your HP device as a multimedia user interface for recording. But without a connection, you will NOT be able to do this. To use GoPro without this Wi-Fi,
You can only record through the screens on the GoPro. So you need a really good shooting method. Especially for tricky angles. And each recorded must connect the GoPro to a laptop or PC to complete the transfer process.
What programs can be used to capture?
Canon is offering a public beta version of its new EOS Webcam Utility app, which allows you to use your photo / camera as a USB webcam. Initially, the program was only available for Windows, but recently the functionality has been ported to macOS.
Nikon recently released the Nikon Webcam Utility. This is a beta version for Windows 10. The Mac version is expected to be announced later. The app is compatible with Nikon Z series cameras as well as the latest D6, D850, D780, D500, D7500 and D5600 DSLRs.
Here Fujifilm is available Fujifilm X Webcam for Windows and macOS. Utility works with MultIPle premium Fujifilm mirrorless cameras including X-T2, X-T3 and X-T4, as well as all GFX models in the mid-range category.
Also in June, Fujifilm released a firmware update for the entry-level X-A7 and X-T200, which allows mirrorless cameras to be turned into USB webcams without dedicated GoPro software. With the latest software, these cameras are recognized in any communication application on macOS and Windows. However, by default, most settings, including exposures, are locked. You can use the forced exposure compensation tool to adjust lighting.
Panasonic Lumix Tether, beta streaming software, is compatible with select Panasonic Lumix mirrorless cameras in Windows environment. It is similar to the earlier snapping program, but differs in that it removes overlays from the stream (focus frames, indicators and other interface elements displayed on the camera display).
The webcam option is also present in the OM-D Webcam from Olympus. So far, there is only compatibility with Windows 10 and five advanced devices: E-M1X, E-M1, E-M1 Mark II, E-M1 Mark III or E-M5 Mark II. After installing the software and connecting, the device becomes available as a webcam in the chat program.
An action camera does not provide cinematic effects like a DSLR or mirrorless camera, but you can use it as a webcam. GoPro HERO8 Black delivers 1080p wide-angle viewing. To convert your action camera to the internet, HERO8 needs to be updated to the latest beta firmware. Then the companion program must be installed on the computer and set up a USB connection to the camera. The software is compatible with macOS, a Windows version is still in development.
All of the Above Programs are compatible with their respective brands. over, support for the desired function is usually not available for older and budget models. But the demand for communication is growing, and it is possible that economy class models will appear in the lists of supported devices. Other manufacturers will soon be presenting their own solutions too, Sony plans to introduce webcast support for the ZV-1 blogger model.
Of the third-party solutions, first of all I would like to mention SparkoCam for Windows, developed for DSLRs from Nikon and Canon. The program is mostly free, but you will have to pay 50 to remove the watermark. Mac version does not exist yet.
Ecamm Live is an advanced option for experienced editors with Mac computers. There is support for cameras from different brands and a wide arsenal of tools, including working with MultIPle cameras, picture-in-picture mode, screen sharing with a Mac or IPhone. After finishing streaming, the program can save the file to your hard drive.
The program is selected. What then?
It doesn’t matter which junk you choose, you will need the included USB cable from the camera anyway.
As a rule, cameras have poor battery life, so you need to make sure that the battery is fully charged. Longer broadcasts will require uninterrupted power via an AC adapter.
Unlike HDMI, USB does not provide access to the camera’s microphone, so you have to think about where the sound will be recorded from. from the built-in microphone of the computer or from an external one (connected to the computer, not to the camera).
The camera must be positioned so that it does not move during operation. It is best to use a stable trIPod for this purpose.
Lighting and an external microphone are optional attributes, but with them the quality of the material will be much better.
Further manIPulations depend on the selected capture program. Before starting work, you need to turn on the camera, connect it to a computer via USB, launch an application for capturing an image, and perform the required actions in it. Then it will launch the application through which the broadcast itself will go, and specify an external camera instead of the built-in default.
Software part
There are applications that are capable of capturing a stream from a camera connected directly to USB without HDMI. These solutions are less flexible than grIPper adapters, but they are convenient in that they eliminate the expense of additional accessories. As telecommuting has become more relevant in 2020, many camera manufacturers have launched their own software solutions. For Canon, Nikon, Fujifilm, Panasonic, Olympus and GoPro, the webcam function is a standard tool. Most often it is represented by the beta version. There is also third-party software with a similar option.
What are the capture cards?
One of the following devices can be used as a capture adapter:
- ELGato Cam Link 4K.
- Mirabox Capture Card.
- Blackmagic Design ATEM Mini.
As for the Blackmagic Design ATEM Mini, this 4-input HDMI mixer is the most feature-rich board on offer. It allows you to connect multIPle cameras and choose from which one to display the image on a computer, shoot from different angles, configure windows, set up screen sharing, save still images. Of course, such a rich arsenal is NOT required for standard Zoom communication, but the ATEM Mini is much more flexible than a simple HDMI to USB adapter.
How to use your camera as a webcam?
Mobile phone cameras DO NOT stop competing with each other in terms of megapixels. What about laptops and tablets? They also have a camera for communication, only its indicators are modest and do not get better from year to year.
Laptop manufacturers are reluctant to talk about their devices’ webcam performance. The fact is that most of THESE cameras leave much to be desired: they have Tiny matrices and cheap lenses. For basic conference calling, they are good, but for something else, no longer.
Chatting isn’t the only way to use the built-in camera of a laptop or tablet. There are also streaming activities such as blogging and online lessons, and they are very demanding on the quality of the material.
If the capabilities of the built-in camera are too little, you can connect external optics to your computer via USB. For this purpose, both a DSLR and a mirrorless camera are suitable. True, you will have to do a few manIPulations to make the computer recognize this type of device exactly as a webcam. It’s worth tinkering, because in the end you will get high resolution, excellent detail in low light conditions and artistic background effects.
In order for an external camera and a computer to work in conjunction, you will need additional equIPment and special software. The very process of connecting and configuring is NOT very complicated. To make things easier, the major camera manufacturers (Canon, Nikon, Fujifilm, Panasonic, Olympus, and GoPro) have recently added webcam mode to their software. Chances are high that you can quickly and painlessly convert your camera into a webcam.
Hardware part
Most computers are NOT capable of recognizing images from an external camera via HDMI by default. If the computer itself has HDMI, it is most likely an output port. Although the cameras have USB connectors, they usually do NOT send a clean signal through them.
For this reason, you need an HDMI to USB converter. If present, the computer will be able to recognize the connected optics as a webcam. The advantage of this approach is that any HDMI source can be converted to input, from a camera to a game console or a second computer. And the output can be used for any purpose, from conferencing to live streaming or recording to hard drive.
Quality. Received by the computer depends entirely on the technical capabilities of the converter. If the camera writes 4K, and the USB adapter only supports 1080p, then the maximum recording resolution will be 1080p. Since most live broadcasts and conferences are limited to 1080p (or even 720p), this nuance is unlikely to play a big role, but it’s worth remembering.
The adapter is connected. What to do next?
Now you need to get a clean signal from the camera. Otherwise, the broadcast will show everything on the unit’s display, including user interface overlays, focus and setting indicators. Here you need to be aware that the function of outputting a pure HDMI signal is NOT present in all cameras: it can be found in the intermediate and advanced models. Since each camera has its own menu organization, the user manual will help you find the desired setting.
Let’s move on to setting focus. If the camera has focusing with face recognition (and best of all, eye autofocus), then the automatic will do everything for you. If available, standard continuous autofocus C-AF should be used. You can adjust the focus manually, but this mode is only suitable for those cases when you will not be moving in the frame.
And then you need to go to the chat settings and switch from the built-in webcam to the external.
Optional accessories
The design of the camera does not allow you to mount it directly on the computer monitor, and not blocking the screen, so you need a trIPod to work. A compact desktop like the Joby GorillaPod or Manfrotto Pixi is best.
Don’t forget about audio quality as this is an important factor for a commercially successful material. An external USB microphone will improve the perception of your voice.
IP Webcam
IP Webcam is another good application with the same capabilities. To use your Android phone as a webcam using this app, follow these steps:
- Install IP Webcam on your phone and launch the application, the application page in the Play Store. https://play.Google.com/store/apps/details?Id=com.Pas.Webcam
- In the application, after launching, the settings screen will immediately open. Scroll down and click “Run”.
- On the phone screen below the address will be displayed where you can access the camera. Enter it in the address bar of your browser on your computer, connecting to the same network as your phone. A page should open like the image below.
- In the menu of this page, select “Drivers for chats”. “IP Camera Adapter” and download the driver to your computer from the link on the next page. Install it on your computer. Also you can just download the webcam driver from https://IP-webcam.Appspot.com/
- After installation, launch the IP Camera Adapter configuration utility and enter the IP addresses indicated on the phone screen, with the addition / at the end, for example http://192.168.1.168:8080/ and click Ok.
- Done. Now, as in the case with the previous application, you can launch any messenger or other program where you need a webcam, for example, Skype, select MJPEG Camera in the camera settings and use your phone as a webcam.
Again, this works fine in most, but not all, applications. Also remember about the privacy settings in Windows 10, where you can turn on the prohibition of access to the camera, for more details: What to do if the webcam does not work in Windows 10.
How to make a webcam from an Android phone
If you urgently need a webcam to communicate in Skype, Zoom or another chat or messenger, but you have nothing at hand except your Android phone, you can easily repurpose it into a webcam for your computer or laptop.
This tutorial details two easy ways to use your Android phone as a webcam for Windows 10 8.1 or Windows 7. May also be interesting: Unusual ways to use your Android phone and tablet.
Turning Android into a Webcam with DroidCam
Droidcam Wireless Webcam is one of the most popular and simplest applications for this purpose. It allows you to easily convert an Android phone into an IP camera with access via a local network or (after some manIPulations). via the Internet or into a webcam for use on a computer via Wi-Fi or USB cable.
- Download the free DroidCam app for your Android phone from the Play Store. https://play.Google.com/store/apps/details?Id=com.Dev47apps.Droidcam. You can immediately launch it, after the screen with basic information, the camera is automatically activated and in the application window you will see the addresses of the webcam in the local network. Attention: both the computer and the phone must be connected to the same network. If this cannot be implemented, an additional USB connection method will be described below.
- Download and install the DroidCam Client program on your computer from the official website https://www.Dev47apps.com/droidcam/windows/
- Launch DroidCam on your computer and enter the IP displayed on your phone. Optionally, check the “Audio” box for more than just programs. But also audio. Click the Start button.
- As a result, after connecting, you will see the image from the phone camera in the DroidCam window. You can minimize this window (or press CtrlH to minimize the program to the notification area), and then open any program in which you need a webcam, if necessary, select the desired DroidCam camera in the program settings.
- If you need to select the front or main camera of the phone, you can go to the DroidCam settings on the phone and open the “Camera” item.
In most conferencing applications, the DroidCam webcam works successfully, but I was not able to make it work in the built-in Camera application of Windows 10. Unfortunately, in my case, the camera turned out to be upside down (although, in general, you can change the position of the phone), and the options for rotating and mirroring the camera are not available in the free version of Droidcam.
If you cannot connect your computer and phone to the same network, you can use the phone’s USB connection, for this:
- Enable USB debugging on your Android phone, Connect your phone with a cable to your computer and enable debugging on your phone screen. Launch the DroidCam app on Android.
- In DroidCam on your computer, select a USB connection, select your device in the list and click Start.
- The rest of the steps will be the same as in the previous case.
