Audio recording in video surveillance systems is implemented depending on its type:

  • analog. video recorder or PC with video capture card;
  • digital (IP). network video recorder, PC, cloud servers (audio recording is carried out synchronously with video recording).

In professional analog video surveillance systems, special video recorders are usually used. The choice of a suitable model directly depends on the number of cameras with sound recording. Considering the fact that most modern IP cameras are equipped with a built-in microphone, video surveillance systems are designed with audio monitoring capabilities in mind. However, video control remains a priority. For example, when choosing a location for a camera, the coverage area of ​​the built-in microphone is rarely considered.


CCTV cameras with audio recording function fall into two broad categories:

  • analog;
  • digital.

The second category is more extensive, the equipment differs in the way of digital data transmission (IP, P2P technologies). There is a steady trend towards the transition to digital video surveillance systems with wider functionality.

Professional analog CCTV cameras with audio recording (options with a built-in microphone) are very rare. The main reason is that high-quality sound recording and audio monitoring require the use of separately installed active microphones.

Often these cameras are equipped with a speaker that allows two-way communication. The scope of such equipment is home video surveillance and security systems for private facilities with low security requirements.

In professional IP cameras, microphones with increased sensitivity are used, and software sound correction is also provided without cutting off quiet sounds, regardless of quality. Also, most professional models allow you to connect an external microphone.

Recording sound when using an IP video recorder is extremely simple. in the camera settings, you just need to select the type of video (video and audio) and the sound will be saved on one track with the video recording.

The first thing to do before choosing a home camera capable of recording is determined by the goals and objectives that you are pursuing. I constantly mention this, since this moment is decisive when choosing the technical characteristics and options of the device.

Several of the most common options:

  • installation of outdoor video surveillance to control the surrounding area;
  • installation of video surveillance for monitoring children, elderly relatives;

In the first case, no special “delights” are needed. Therefore, you can install a DVR and connect any type of camera to it. It should be noted that in this case, you can get a practically unlimited depth of the video archive and not worry that the recording will be interrupted at the most inopportune moment.

For remote monitoring, a video camera with support for recording to a card or flash drive will be useful as a way to level the variable speed of the Internet connection. If, for some reason, the Internet channel temporarily “falls off”, the information will be saved on the side of the TV camera and, when the connection is restored, sent to the “cloud”.

For some reason, it is believed that the surveillance of incoming workers should be hidden. In this case, I do not see much benefit in using a camera with recording on the built-in media at home. Installing a hidden camera is often more difficult than hiding a recorder. An exception is, again, remote access via the Internet.

If we talk about security, then in this case, video surveillance is best used in integration with burglar alarms. There are enough technical solutions to implement such tasks.

Thus, the use of CCTV cameras with recording for a private house in most cases may be impractical.


At its core, a flash drive is not much different from a CD card. The most significant differences are:

  • the maximum possible amount of memory;
  • type of connector for connection.

If the memory card can be inserted directly into the camcorder body, then the flash drive uses the USB connector as a connector. Typically, it is placed on a flexible wire outside the cctv camera body.

For analog video cameras, it can be done using a video capture (video capture) card installed in a computer or on a digital video recorder, that is, a separate additional device is required. IP cameras can also work with the software supplied with them. In addition, many of them have their own web client installed directly from the video camera when it is first connected to a computer.


The temptation to use a recording camera for wireless covert video surveillance is understandable. Let’s look at the advantages and disadvantages of such technical solutions.

The undoubted advantage, of course, is the lack of wires. This greatly simplifies the hidden installation process. I draw your attention to the fact that two options are possible here:

  • the use of hidden cameras with the possibility of wireless data transmission;
  • the use of an autonomous camera that works exclusively “for itself”.

The first option can cause inconvenience in camouflaging the antenna and power wires. The use of an autonomous voltage source requires its periodic replacement, which is quite inconvenient. A fairly reasonable question arises. why, in this case, write to a memory card or USB flash drive. There are several arguments in favor of such a decision.

First, you can opt out of recording on the side of the checkpoints. You can simply periodically remotely view the information on the carrier. If necessary, noteworthy files can be selected manually and downloaded.

Secondly, the wireless transmission rate may not be stable and vary depending on the time of day, electromagnetic environment, and the load on the WI-FI network.
