Hacking a surveillance camera.
A little theory, then practice.
Almost all modern digital IP surveillance cameras are built on the linux operating system, which is heavily trimmed down and has only the essentials for work. The linux operating system itself is free, very reliable and resistant to external influences and hacking, so the manufacturer builds recorders, servers, surveillance cameras, NAS and other smart gadgets on its basis.
By “hacking a surveillance camera” we mean gaining access by an administrator.
Access can be gained to:
– Camera web GUI. Having obtained such access, an attacker can view. With a microphone. Hear what is happening, and in the presence of two-way audio communication (microphone and speaker), also conduct a dialogue with the victim. All settings that the device has are also available.
– operating system via SSH or another second protocol. By gaining access, you are given the command of the term. This vulnerability was used in large-scale DDoS attacks by hackers from hacked cameras, and the computing power of surveillance was used for mining cryptocurrency.
Consider the weaknesses of such devices.
– Human factor. The device has standard settings: standard login and password. After installing the equIPment, you MUST change it.
– The incompetence of the specialists who were involved in installing and configuring cameras. You need to understand how the system is built, when using an external IP address, you need to reliably protect the device, which looks outside (the Internet). Pay due attention to the protection of the Wi-fi router, which is used almost everywhere where there is Internet.
– Use of standard or weak (less than 8 characters of passwords). For cracking, as a rule, brute force attacks are used using a dictionary (brute force method), which contains all standard passwords: admin, 888888, 123456, 12345, etc.
To protect the owners, the manufacturer introduces additional security measures, for example, for Hikvision on all new devices, activation is required, which forces the owner to set a password, in accordance with the security requirement: upper and lower case letters, numbers and limits the minimum length.
There are many ways to hack, consider one of the simplest, using the Shodan search engine. The search engine constantly scans the Internet and collects a database of devices that responded to his requests: these are recorders, surveillance cameras, routers, firewalls, that is, all network devices that look into the worldwide network.
Let’s try to get access to those devices that have default (standard) passwords.

Let’s go to practice.
Breaking! We go to the site: https://www.Shodan.Io
Without registration, we will be limited to the number of requests. Therefore, it is better to go through a simple registration procedure on the site.
Next, in the search bar, we need to enter what we want to find.
Examples of requests for unauthorized access, hacking:
default password port: 80 (where default password. Devices with standard passwords, port: 80. Serves for receiving and transmitting data via HTTP, in our case we are looking for all devices with a web interface).
Port: 80 nvr country: “it” (We are looking for nvr. Network Recorder devices, that is, recorders; country: “it”. The search will be performed only in Italy).
Port: 80 DVR country: “ru” (We are looking for DVR devices. Digital Recorder (digital recorders) in Russia).
Port: 80 country: “ru” asus (we are looking for equIPment with a web interface from the manufacturer ASUS, the largest issue will most likely be for routers from this GoPro manufacturer).
230 Anonymous access granted (get access to FTP servers with the ability to anonymously access).
Android Webcam (gadgets on android, which are used as a WEB-camera using software).
Server: SQ-WEBCAM (this request will return a list of equIPment with servers on which it found webcams).
A complete list of commands can be found on the Shodan search engine website.
Don’t forget. When hacked, all responsibility will be on you!
As an example, for the first query: default password port: 80, 3278 results were found in the search base. According to the second and third results, as can be seen from Fig. 1, we see that login: admin, and the password for access through the web interface: 1234.
Follow the link. Getting to the login page. We go Using the received data and voila, we get to someone else’s Edimax access point. We have admin rights and we can do absolutely everything: change the language, change the password, reconfigure the equIPment or uncheck the “hide” checkbox to peep someone else’s password.
In the same way, you can hack and gain access to other people’s surveillance cameras, network attached storage (NAS), printers, web cameras and any other network equIPment.
Now imagine what it can lead to if the Attacker. A professional in his field. All the results obtained with the help of bots can be entered into your database and then with the help of the software you can start searching through the dictionary. Believe me, the result of successful attacks will be ten times higher!
To prevent this from happening to you, and your surveillance system is NOT hacked. Start to understand this issue, take responsibility and ensure the proper security of all your network equIPment!

Determine IP using programs
With an IP camera, there is almost always a program that can quickly find it on the network. If there was no such program, it can be downloaded from the device manufacturer’s website.
An example of the iVMS-4200 interface is shown below. The software is easier to use for surveillance. IVMS-4200 can record. Watch in real time, make backups, factory reset and other parameters.
In iVMS-4200, to find out the IP-address, go to the “Storage Schedule” tab. On the left there will be a list of cameras and IP-addresses.
It so happens that the cameras have official software, it is better to use universal programs to search for IP-cameras on the network, which are usually called “scanners”. An example of such a scanner is Angy IP Scanner, which makes it possible to find out the IP on the LAN. The software works under windows, linux, mac.
The software does not need to be installed, at the first start it will show brief information in English, because there is a Russian interface.
In the main menu, you should specify the range of addresses, which can be found in the instructions. If you do NOT want to search for this range, you can enter the universal 192.168.0.0. 192.168.255.255.
Start the scan, click on the start button, Angy IP Scanner will show all IP addresses, which can be divided into two groups.
Available IP-addresses are marked with a blue circle. Unavailable. marked with a red circle. You just need to see what color the circle is.
There is another program that can help determine the IP-address, TCPnetView. The interface is in Russian. Start TCPnetView and press F5. In addition to the IP address, it will display on the screen: Mass addresses, hostname, network resource, comment to the resource.
Let’s see how to find out the IP-address of the surveillance camera:
How to determine the IP addresses of the camera
An IP camera is a device that transmits images using the IP protocol.
The camera uses a LAN / WAN connection for data transmission. LAN is a local area network, WAN Internet. To transmit the image to the second device, you need IP-addresses, which is assigned to a network device called an IP-camera. In the article, we will analyze the main ways to determine the address.
Determine IP-address using the command line
There is a way in which you can determine the IP through cmd (windows command line). Do NOT need to run scanners.
- Connect the camera to the computer via a network cable (rj45).
- Connect camera power.
- Run cmd. (Start execute).
- Type the command “IPconfig” press enter, there is another utility arp.a.
At the exit, get a list of IP-addresses that are connected to the computer.
Determine the IP addresses of the surveillance camera
IP cameras are easy to identify using the instructions. Each instruction contains information: IP-address; Subnet mask; Gateway. What if there is no documentation? Everything is simple here, go to the manufacturer’s website and download it to your computer. The site will ask the device model. This information can be viewed on the device itself. There is another option to find out the IP. look on the Internet “default IP-address”.
Connection recommendations
DO NOT connect several IP cameras to your computer at once, as they may conflict. Because by default, many IP devices have the same IP address.
To prevent this from happening, change the default IP-address. Having connected each IP-camera separately, go to the web interface and change the settings.
IP cameras differ from analog cameras not only in resolution, digital protocol, but also in the way they are connected to a recording device. If it is enough to connect an ordinary camera to the recorder or the input of the capture card and you can enjoy seeing the image from this camera, then in order to view the image from the IP camera, you need not only connect it to a computer or computer network through a switch, you also need to find out its IP addresses.
How to find the IP address of the camera?
There are several ways.
Firstly, if there is an instruction for the camera, it should say which IP address is set in the camera by default. If the IP camera is not new, then it is possible that the IP addresses were changed in it, then reset the camera settings to factory settings. press the Reset button.
Default IP address:
- Beward. 192.168.0.99 Login: admin, password: admin
- Dahua. 192.168.1.108 Login: admin, password: admin
- Microdigital. 10.20.30.40 Login: root, password: root
- Novicam. 192.168.0.88 Login: admin, p Arol: absent
- Aircam. 192.168.1.20 Login: ubnt, password: ubnt
- IPEYE. 192.168.0.123 Login: admin, password: 123456
- Hikvision. 192.0.0.64 Login: admin, password: 12345
- Polyvision. 192.168.1.10 Login admin, password: none
- Space Technology. DHCP is enabled by default in old cameras, the camera can be found and IP addresses can be viewed / changed using this program. Login: admin, password: 12345, in new ones. default IP: 192.168.0.100
- Matrixtech. 192.168.1.120 Login: admin, password: 1111
- Giraff. 192.168.1.10 Login: admin, no password
Here I would like to note that there is no need to connect several IP cameras to one network at once, especially if these are cameras from the same GoPro manufacturer. T.K. They all initially have the same IP addresses, then there will be a conflict in the network. First connect one IP camera, change IP addresses in it in accordance with your subnet, then the second, etc.
Secondly, each IP camera must come with software that will allow you to quickly find the connected camera on the network, if necessary, change this address and make all the necessary settings. On this page, we will post links to similar software if you suddenly lost the CD that came with the IP camera and cannot determine the IP address of this camera.
Thirdly, in order to find out the IP address of the camera, or the second device (router, router, modem, second computer connected to your network), you can use a simple program to scan IP addresses. An example of such a program is the Angry IP Scan utility. With this simple program with an intuitive interface, you can not only scan all the IP addresses in your network, but also find out the MAC addresses of the device and its response speed.
It is enough to specify the range of scanned addresses in the program and press the START button, and all scanned addresses will appear in the list. Available IP addresses will be marked with a blue circle. If you do not know the subnet of your IP camera, enter the range 192.168.0.0. 192.168.255.255, while scanning can take quite a long time.
By the way, with the help of this simple program you can detect all unauthorized connections to your wireless network in order to further add their IP address to the blacklist of your router.
Below we provide a list of programs for determining the IP addresses of specific IP cameras:
In order to find out the IP addresses of a digital camera, you can use universal software that supports a large number of different IP cameras, for example, Macroscop or Line software.
In conclusion, it seems, and it will not be superfluous to remind that for the successful collaboration of the IP addresses of your computer and the addresses of your IP cameras must be on the same subnet, i.e. Penultimate numbers IP address Must be the same. This applies not only to IP cameras, but also to all digital devices operating in the same computer network.
There are several options for determining the IP address of a camera connected to a network.
1. The software bundled with the camera usually allows you to view a list of cameras connected to the network and their IP addresses.
2. If your camera has a web interface, then the IP address of the camera is part of this address. For example, if the web interface is accessed at (URL) http://10.0.0.1, then the camera’s IP address is 10.0.0.1
3. Go to the router settings interface. Open the settings section, which displays the IP address of DHCP clients (may be called “DHCP clients”, “local devices”, “connected devices” or similar). If you cannot immediately determine which IP address belongs to your camera, find the MAC addresses, which are registered either on the camera itself or on the camera box.
Examples Shown below in the figures
If still unable to determine the IP address of the camera, then
If DHCP cannot be enabled, then you can connect the IP camera directly to the computer’s network interface using an Ethernet cable, so that, after performing a few manIPulations in the network adapter settings, you can determine the IP address of your camera
Determine IP using programs

Configuring surveillance systems from March 7, 2017
Having connected the IP camera to the network, the task arises to find its IP addresses for initial configuration. In this article, you will find the main ways to find out IP addresses.
The easiest way to find a camera is to use the manufacturer’s camera search utility:
Determined using Special Programs
As a rule, a special program is supplied with the IP-camera, installed which you can quickly find out the IP address of all devices connected to the computer. If there is no disk, then you can find the scanner on the manufacturer’s official website.
Such a program is easier to use for monitoring: there is a convenient menu for viewing and recording material, changing the second parameters, resetting configurations to factory settings. Below is an example of the interface of client software iVMS-4200.
To find out the IP addresses, you need to go to the “Device Management” tab.
If there is no official software for the camera (this usually happens with Chinese devices), then it is best to use a universal program to determine the IP address. Angy IP Scanner is the most popular software that allows you to find out the address of all devices on the local network. It works correctly on all popular operating systems (Windows, Linux, MACOS X).
Immediately after launch (does not require installation), the program will offer to Read a brief annotation, which explains in detail its princIPles of operation.
Once you get to the main screen of the program, enter the following range of IP addresses to search: 192.168.0.0-192.168.255.255. To search for public surveillance cameras in the public domain, you must change the range to 10.194.0.1-10.232.255.254
As soon as the scanner is shut down, the IP addresses available to you will be marked with a blue circle, and the unavailable ones. in red. The program is convenient for identifying a list of devices that have illegally connected to your wireless network.
Web interface
To access the web interface of the camera, launch the browser and enter the IP camera in the address bar. If everything is done correctly, a welcome window will appear asking you to enter your username and password.
Authentication data (like IP) can be found in the manual or on the Internet. If the username and password for some reason do not fit, check the correctness of the entered data, and then Reset the settings to the factory settings using the “RESET” button on the camera.
As soon as you get to the web interface, you can already use the device for its intended purpose.
To do this, go to the “View” tab. If there is an image, then you need to download a special plug-in for the browser (the browser will automatically offer to download and install it, agree). After that, the online monitoring function will become available to you.
The next thing to do after connecting to the network is to change the default username and password. You don’t have to come up with something complicated. It is enough to install something different from the standard combinations (password, qwerty, 12345, repeating numbers, your first or last name, etc.).
Thanks to this, you can protect yourself from unauthorized access by intruders.
Defining IP cameras
To connect an IP camera, you need to know its address and authentication data (login, password). To do this, you can use the instructions that come with the device or download the documentation on the manufacturer’s official website, look at the IP on the box or back cover. A list of default authentication credentials for accessing popular models can be easily found on the Internet.
The main problem when using this method is that the camera address specified in the instructions may not be entirely accurate.
In this case, you have to download a scanner. a program for finding IP addresses.
How to find the IP address of surveillance cameras
- Defining IP cameras
- Determined using Special Programs
- Determining using the command line
- Changing settings
- Web interface
- General recommendations
- On this topic
An IP camera is a type of network device. Therefore, to transfer information requires a LAN / WAN connection or the Internet. In order to transmit data to the correct device, it is assigned an IP address. Only by knowing it, you can view and record content.
Determining using the command line
It is not necessary to download a special scanner. Standard Windows tools allow you to find out the IP address of all network devices connected to your computer. To find out the IP address of your camera, you need to:
- Connect one end of the LAN cable to the camera and the other to the computer;
- Connect the camera power supply;
- Go to the “Start” menu. “All programs”. “Accessories”. “Command line”;
- Enter a command like “arp.A” without quotation marks and press “Enter”, another command that will determine the IP address of all devices connected to the computer. “IPconfig”;
- After that the command line will give a list of all IP addresses that are connected to your network card.
Changing settings
Once you know the camera’s IP addresses and authentication data, you can go to the web interface and change other device parameters. In order to do this, you need to change the network range settings on your computer:
- Connect the camera to your computer and go to the “Network and Sharing Center”;
- A new, unidentified network should appear in the list of active networks;
- Right-click on it and go to the “Properties”. “Networks” tab;
- Further in the list you must find the line “Internet Protocol version 4”;
- By default, you should have checked “Obtain an IP address automatically”, Change this parameter to “Use the following IP address”, and then enter the IP of the camera, which you already learned;
- Subnet mask data is universal, it is 255.255.255.0.
After changing the parameters of the subnet range, you can get into the web interface of the camera.
General recommendations
If you are going to connect several IP cameras to your computer at once (for example, for surveillance), then you should not do it simultaneously. This is especially true for devices from one GoPro manufacturer.
As you already understood, by default all cameras have standard IP addresses, so if you connect several of the same ones at the same time, they will conflict with each other.
You can change the default IP address of the camera through the web interface.
Search and configure IP cameras through third-party services
In addition to documentation, the manufacturer often replenishes the standard package with disks with drivers and special programs for setting, searching and even viewing recorded materials.
If there was NO disk in the kit or the computer has long been left without a disk drive, then the official website will help you find the right software, where in the “Support” section there are tools for each model of the surveillance system.
Some manufacturers have long abandoned specialized programs (especially local Chinese brands), which is why instead of official software they have to rely on third-party software. As an option. on “Angry IP Scanner”, which helps to recognize IP cameras in a semi-automatic mode and in a matter of minutes.
The procedure is extremely predictable:
- At the top of the interface, in the “IP Range” field, enter the address to search, starting with 192.168.0.0 and ending with 192.168.255.255. In addition to local IPs, it is advisable NOT to forget about the public network ranges. 10.194.0.1 and 10.232.255.254.
- After entering the listed information (which is often set automatically), it remains to click on the “Start” button and wait for the results.
- The list below will show values marked in blue (available for interaction, customization and use), and in red (foreign and inaccessible). Green denotes a non-observation technique.
Angry IP Scanner is a cross-platform tool: runs on Windows, MacOS and Linux, and in addition to searching for network values, it even helps to identify those who have illegally connected to the network.
Manufacturer instructions and command line
It is recommended to start your search with the instructions enclosed by the manufacturer in the box with the network equIPment. The documentation describes in detail the IP addresses, confidential information for passing authentication (the classic combination of admin and root / admin has NOT disappeared anywhere), and the nuances associated with connecting, activating and changing parameters.
Often, the instructions are already enough for full operation, but if the camera is outdated for a long time, then many values may have changed, and then for additional accuracy it is better to use the command line invoked through the Start menu.
Before adding commands, the camera must be connected to the PC using a LAN cable, taking care in advance to recharge the selected surveillance system (otherwise, at the time of searches, the equIPment will simply be left without energy).
The next step is to enter a combination: “arp.A” or “IPconfig” (without quotes). and search for the required IP address by the list of dynamic and static values that appears. If there is not enough data to determine it, then a clever trick will help you find what you need on the local network faster: the received address can be copied and transferred to a notepad. And then. repeat the procedure with entering commands, but without connecting the camera to the computer.
How to find the IP surveillance camera address: search and identify
Hello! Networked Surveillance Systems Based on IP Cameras need to be configured correctly. In addition to choosing the quality of what is recorded, the administrator will also have to deal with LAN / WAN synchronization, network storage, where the Prepared files will go, and with privacy settings to protect content.
But how do you start setting up if you can’t find the IP address of the IP cameras right away? And how to act if the necessary information cannot be found even on thematic forums or on official sites? Usually this information is written on a label located on the lid of the device. Sometimes it can be pasted on the inside. Also, this information is written on the packaging or in the manual. If you cannot find this information, then read the tIPs below.
Web interface and parameters for authorization
With the received addresses and data found in the documentation, the developers of cameras and surveillance systems are allowed to access Not only programs, but also special resources through a web browser.
The same equIPment from HIKVISION assumes authorization by e-mail and a password on the official website (after which it will be possible to add a device). Third-party vendors act in a similar way and suggest to forget about software and focus on wireless and remote access to cameras from mobile platforms, and a computer from anywhere.
