How to Create, Delete and Expand Hard Drive Sections in Windows 10
The hard disk is divided by the Windows operating system by default into two parts, one of which is assigned to the installation of the system itself and all the files associated with it, and the second is on all third-party programs and games, photos, videos and other elements that are not related to the operation of the system. But sometimes the disk can be broken differently, or the existing separation may not satisfy you, in this case you can change the number of local partitions, remove old or create new. Also, you can change the size of one of the local disks by adding the memory on it to another part or leaving it unused. All examples of action in the article will be performed in Windows 10. Be careful, working with disks can lead to the loss of data stored on them, so copy all the important information to another carrier before starting the process.
If one of your disks allocated too much memory, it can be divided into several pieces by following the following steps:
-
Clicking on the Windows icon in the lower left corner of the PKM screen, find and open the “Disk Management” program.
Is it possible to combine two sections in one?
Many users face that the hard disk of the computer is divided into too much sections. The output seems to be obvious. combine local disks. But it is impossible to do this in Windows, since it is impossible to combine all the folders and files stored on both disks in one section. If it were possible, all the items would have merged, the installed programs would not be able to find the files necessary for their work, and the folders with the same names were combined into one unit, making even greater confusion. That is why the alignment of volumes in Windows is impossible. The only way to combine two volumes is to delete both partitions, and after combining the released memory to one local disk, or delete one volume, and after adding memory from it to another section.
How to distribute disk space in windows 7
In Windows, each partition corresponds to its logical disk, which is how they are displayed in the Wire Explorer. And although it is possible to create only one section of the volume into the entire disk, in practice it is rare. After all, the first (and the only one) section is systemic. It is exposed to high risk due to possible viral or hacker attacks and inept user actions. If you keep user data on it. they may die, so the typical variant of the markup of the hard disk is the creation of two sections (and two logical disks): system and user.
Typical disk configuration in home PC consists of two sections
Hard disk is not distributed
When installing a new hard disk to the computer, it is best to combine the creation of sections with the installation of the operating system.
Thus, you will have two partitions on the disk: System and Custom.
How to create partitions on a hard disk
As in the case described above, to create partitions on a hard disk, you will need to start the disk management utility or any program of work with partner sections. For example, the Minitool Partition Wizard program will allow you to create a new partition on the disk is easy and simple.
How to create a GPT disk
Since the replacement of the standard BIOS, UEFI came and the Windows 7 operating system was released, the basic type of disc marking was GPT instead of the traditional MBR. If you bought a new hard disk and install the operating system on it, the algorithm will be blunting simple.
If you have a disk, formerly in operation, formatted MBR and with sections on it, then the procedure will be more complex and cumbersome.
System requirements…
When it comes to systemic requirements, it is necessary to clearly understand that they are indicated in them Minimum
Parameters that are enough to install and run the system. ForLong-term and comfortable work they are not suitable.
did not prevent serious discs on the disk space. for “Gold” a modest figure in 1 was declared.5 GB. For the normal operation of this, of course, was not enough, but the section at 15. 20 GB allowed to freely accommodate the system and programs.
Over time, hard drives have become more comprehensive, and the price per gigabyte space continued to decline (the flood in Thailand is a temporary exception). Windows XP replaces Windows Vista
, which was already 40 GB. Let us miss it, as many users did, and then let’s go to Windows 7.
Microsoft has done a horse’s move and stated that the system needs at least 16 GB on the disk, although Windows 7
required no less than the place than the previous OS.
But while solid-state disks (SSD) began to gain a move, then still small and terribly expensive. Redmond could not allow the latest operating system to be incompatible with topical drive technology, so I had to mislead users. You can, of course, install Windows 7 to the section in 16 GB, but it is akin to install XP to section in 1.5 GB.
Using “Disk Management
As already mentioned, to create a disk D it is not necessary to resort to the use of third-party programs, since everything can be done with the tools that are already present in Windows 10. The main tool is “Disk Management”. You can run this program in different ways. The easiest option is to right-click on the “Start” button (or press the Windows-X key combination) and select the appropriate item in the menu that appears.
In addition, you can use “DiskMGMT.MSC “, which needs to be done using the” Run “menu (Windows-R).
As a result, the “Disk Management” window opens in front of you. All drives connected to your computer will be displayed here. To create a D disc Find a C drive, click on it right-click and in the menu that opens, select the “Compress Tom” option.
After that, the system will begin the analysis of the selected partition to determine the free space that can be used. This process can take a few minutes, so do not close the window.
The disk compression window will appear later. Here will be a numeric field in which the maximum size of the free space will be specified (in megabytes), which can be cut off from the disk C to further create a D disc. If you leave the value that Windows 10 offers, then almost all free space will be cut off. It is not very good because the system section should always have some place. Therefore, you need to specify such a value so that enough free space remains for Windows 10. For example, if now the size of the system partition is 500 GB, then you can cut off 400 GB to create a D disc and leave 100 GB for the operating system.
After compression, part of the free space on the system section will turn into unallocated space. This unallocated space can be used to create a disk D.
Now, in order to create a D disc, you need to right-click on the unallocated space and in the menu that opens, select “Create a Simple Tom”.
The following window “Wizards for creating simple volumes” opens. To start creating a disk d Click on the “Next” button.
In the first step of creating a disk D you will be asked to specify the size of the section. If you want to create only one Disc D, you can simply leave the highest possible size and click on the “Next” button.
Next you need to choose the letter. which you want to assign a new disk. It can be the letter D, E or any other of the proposed list.
The last step is formatting settings. Here, select the NTFS file system, leave the cluster size by default and turn on quick formatting (so as not to wait a few hours). Tom label can be specified at your discretion, this is the name of the disk that is displayed in the conductor.
That’s all. Confirm the creation of a disk D by pressing the “Finish” button.
As a result, a new section will be created in a non-distributed space that was cut off from the C disk.
After that, you can open the conductor and check the results. If everything was done correctly, then you will see two disks there.
How to create a local disk?
Often, when buying a new computer, we meet with the problem that only one volume is created on the hard disk, in other words. To avoid such inconvenience, you can divide one that is somewhat, the main thing is to know what and where to do. Today, we will try to figure out how you can do two, three or more local disks on the computer.
Of course, such a loss can significantly concern the owner of the computer in which important information and valuable files are stored.
However, if the problem is judged and consistently, the excitement will quickly leave, and the PC will start again in normal mode, providing free access to the user to its files.
To solve the question, you must first clarify exactly what disappear disappear. Physical a separate hard drive marked with the letter “D” or the logical section “D” on the screw.
Further detect it and restore the normal display in the “Windows 7” conductor will not be much labor, it is simply necessary to follow the instructions below.
How to create a partition on a hard disk from under Windows?
As I have already written above, we will create another local disk using the Disk Management utility. To begin with, we need to run it. Go to the “Start”. “Control Panel”. Select “Administration”. A window will open in which run “Computer Management”. In the window that opens, on the left you need to select “Disc Control”. Wait a little while the system collects information about the hard disk partitions.
After downloading the information, we will see our entire hard disk and sections that have already been created. So we need to create another partition, but I have only 47 MB of free memory (see below in the picture, Salad region). So you need to take a little space from one of the already created sections, we look at which we have the most free space, highlight it, press it right mouse button and choose “Squeeze volume”. As you can see, I chose a local disk d to compress.
You need to wait a bit until Windows 7 determine how much space can be squeezed from this section :).
A window appears in which you can see what the total size of the section before compression, and how much space is available for compression. In my case, the maximum from the disk D could be taken 20140 MB, excellent for Windows 8 enough. But you can register yourself how much space you want to take from a specific local disk. Click “Squeeze”.
We wait a bit, and look at the table again. As you can see the area with free memory (Salad region) increased. From this free area, you can create a section. Click on it right-click and select “Create a simple volume”.
A master of creating a simple volume opens. Click “Next”.
Based on the free area, the system will show us the maximum and minimum size of the section being created. And will offer to enter the size for the new section. For a new logical disk I used all the free memory, so I just clicked “Next”.
Further we need to assign a letter for the created disk. Therefore, we leave the mark next to “assign a drive letter” and choose the letter, or you can leave the proposed system. Click the button “Next”.
The next stage is the formatting of the section. I advise you to immediately format the local disk. Opposite “File System” I advise you to put NTFS. “Cluster size” and leave the default. Where “Tom Tag” specify any name, since I create a section for installing Windows 8, then I called it. Tick in front of “Fast Formatting” and press “Next”.
Check the information and click “Finish”.
Everything is ready! I have another logical section “H” titled “Windows 8”. Now you can install the operating system, or simply save the information.
If you go to “My Computer”. then you can see the section we created, even without any reboot.
Honestly, I first created a new partition on hard disk with a standard tool in Windows 7. Usually I always use the boot disk, or the standard manager in the process of installing the operating system.
But if you have Windows 7, you just need to create another partition and take some memory from the already existing one, then all this can be done in a few minutes the way that is described above, and there is no point to download and write down all sorts there images of the boot disks.
How to enlarge one logical section at the expense of another using a boot disk, I wrote in the article. read, can come in handy. Here is another article about breaking a new hard disk in the process of installing the operating system.
Maybe someone will say that such a way is bad, and best to create new sections with special programs. It’s not so, I did not have a single problem both when creating and using this section. I easily installed Windows 8 on it next to the already installed Windows 7, but this is the topic for the next article. Good luck friends!
When buying a new laptop, the operating system is only installed on one single disk. Today we will tell you how to create another disc partition without losing your data. We will use only standard Windows tools, t.E. We will not fundamentally apply Special Software.
Compression and expansion of volume in Windows 10
Expansion of volume, this is an increase in the size of the local disk using its unintended area. Unimportant is the area of new hard drives, as well as it can be obtained by compressing local disks.
How to compress Tom in Windows 10
To compress Tom in Windows 10, do the following:
- Open the drives and how it was above.
- Select the disk you want to compress in the bottom window and click on it right mouse button.
- Select “Squeeze Tom”
- We enter the value of the place that must be squeezed from this disk.
Possible problems with compression
If you do not manage to compress, then the following should be done:
- Make a disk defragment. it can increase the most accessible value for compression.
- Disable antivirus programs before trying to compress. For example, Norton anti-virus can block the ability to compress disk.
- And also to zoom in accessible to compression, you can turn off the paging file.
How to expand Tom in Windows 10
If you already have an unbalanced disk area, then it will not be difficult to expand. This is done like this:
-
At the bottom of the “Disk Management” program, select that you need to expand, click on it with the right mouse button and click on the “Expand Tom” item.
Possible problems with expansion
If you have problems with expanding Tom. Check the following:
- Make sure you have a fairly large unbelievable area on the disk.
- For expansion, the region can be used only from adjacent departments. That is, if you have an unbalanced area that does not fit to the expandable, then it will not extend it. In such cases, third-party programs can help.
- Make sure the number of created sections is no more than four. There is a limit on the number of key partitions created.
Not enough nutrition or cooling
HDD nutrition. the most important condition for stable computer work. We are accustomed to choose the configuration of PC according to the characteristics of the video card and processor. But without a good power supply, no component will work fine.
I can collect and disassemble computers, laptops, tablets, phones. Sometimes successful. Masterfully own skills diagnostics breakdowns using Google and Yandex.
I came across such a situation when assembling a cheap computer for a home server. Collected it from those components that were lying in the storage room. BP took from the old corps. As a result, the computer worked with failures, and I could not understand what the problem did not yet test in turns all the details. The culprit was the power supply. After replacing the server works as a Swiss watch until now.
Cooling is also important. Mainly overheating happens on laptops. But the landline computer can be fried in the presence of several HDDs in the closed case, located close to each other. You can find the temperature to the Speccy program (free) or Everest Ultimate (Paid).
If Windows fails, check the temperature of the components in the bios.
