Different connectors can be used for transmitting video and audio signals. To provide data transmission through them, sometimes it is enough to use an adapter. In this case a cable with matching connectors is used. In this case the pins in them are connected in such a way as to ensure the transmission of signals to the right pins. This is possible if the corresponding pins are present in both connectors.

In some cases the situation is quite different. For example, a video card in a computer system unit has DVI-D, and a TV set has a VGA port.

If to look at the DVI-D pins description, you can notice that some pins which are responsible for analog sound component and necessary for VGA-plug are absent here. It is not enough just to connect the pins in the right order. It is necessary to provide a complex transformation of signals. You will need a converter, not an adapter.

Instructions for connecting TV to the computer via HDMI

First of all it is worth to take into account the fact that there is no universal way of connection. This is due to the fact that each TV model has its own characteristics. To understand how to connect the computer to the TV via cable, first it is worth to read the user manual and find out where on the body is the necessary connector.

Experts recommend turning off both devices before connecting. It is believed that this makes synchronization more efficient. After that, you need to connect the computer to the TV via HDMI, insert the plugs in the cable I in the appropriate jacks on the PC and TV. After that, you need to turn on both devices and make further adjustments.

  • Specify the signal source on the TV. This is done differently on different TV models. Usually you just have to press the Source button on the remote control. On some TVs, the Input key performs the same function. Select the HDMI input as the source.
  • On the computer, go to the desktop, right-click and click “Screen Resolution”. Windows will redirect the user to the appropriate settings section. In the field “Display” select the name of the TV device, and in the field “Multiple displays” select “Display desktop on 2 only”. As a result, the picture should appear on your TV screen, transmitted by your computer.

To quickly change the display mode, you can use the WinP key combination. Using this combination, you can quickly switch between the image on the monitor and on the TV, and, if necessary, change the resolution in the settings.

When you connect a PC to the TV, the latter starts acting as a monitor. What opportunities this gives the user? First of all, of course, watching movies and TV series on a comfortable big screen. Connecting Your Computer to Your TV with HDMI

The most proven method is, as always, grandpa’s wire. Wired interfaces evolve every year, so it’s a pretty deep topic that you need to fully explore if you want to do everything “feng shui.

The method itself is very simple. It is enough to plug one end of the cable into the TV set and the other end into the corresponding slot on the motherboard or video card. The most common HDMI cable interface. Its advantage is that it serves to transmit both video and audio signals. That is, all you need is one cable to get the picture and the sound out.

True, not all HDMI are the same. At the time of publication we have counted more than 13 different options. But which one to choose?

It can be distinguished by the following traits.

A little digression for gamers. If you want to use the TV for gaming, keep in mind that the TV has a lower refresh rate and a longer response time than a traditional monitor. But if you have a premium 4K model with 144 Hz, the difference will not be so noticeable, though, you will need a cable version 2.1, which comes close to the cost of an average TV.

Of course, HDMI is not the only type of wired connection. You can connect your PC to your TV with other interfaces, but HDMI is the most common and its bandwidth is one of the highest.

TV as a wireless monitor (Miracast, WiDi)

If the previous section was about how to play any files from your computer on your TV and have access to them, now we will talk about how to broadcast any image at all from your computer or laptop monitor to your TV via Wi-Fi, that is to use it as a wireless monitor. The two main technologies for this are Miracast and Intel WiDi, with the latter reportedly becoming fully compatible with the former. Note that it does not require a router for such a connection, as it is installed directly (by Wi-Fi Direct technology).

  • If you have a laptop or PC with a 3rd generation Intel processor, an Intel wireless adapter, and you have an Intel HD Graphics integrated graphics chip, it should support Intel WiDi on both Windows 7 and Windows 8.1. You may need to install Intel Wireless Display from the official website
  • If your computer or laptop came with Windows 8 preinstalled.1 and have a Wi-Fi adapter, it must support Miracast. If you have Windows 8 installed.1 on its own, it may or may not support. For previous versions of the OS, there is no support.

Finally, support for this technology is also required on the TV side. Until recently you had to buy a Miracast adapter, but now more and more TV models have Miracast support built in or received it during firmware upgrades.

The connection itself looks like this:

  • The TV must have Miracast or WiDi connection support enabled in the settings (by default it is usually enabled, sometimes there is no such setting at all, in this case a Wi-Fi module is enough). On Samsung TVs, the function is called “Screen Mirroring” and is located in the network settings.
  • For WiDi, run the program Intel Wireless Display and find a wireless monitor. You may be asked for a security code when connecting, which will be displayed on the TV.
  • To use Miracast, open the Charms panel (on the right side of Windows 8.1), select “Devices”, then “Projector” (Send to screen). I should note that I have not been able to connect my TV using WiDi from a laptop that accurately supports the technology. No problems with Miracast.

How to connect your TV to the computer

The idea to connect your computer or laptop to the TV may be quite reasonable, if, for example, you often watch movies stored on your hard drive, play games, want to use TV as a second monitor, and in many other cases. Generally speaking, the connection of TV as a second monitor of your PC or laptop (or as the main monitor) is not a problem for most modern TV sets.

Find out what kinds of connections are available

In order for your computer to be able to send an image to your TV, both devices must have video connection ports. Usually there are no problems with this, as all modern televisions have at least one common audio/video connector called HDMI. It is located on the back or side and is appropriately labeled with a letter.

Whether a PC has HDMI is a matter of luck. In most desktop computers, it is present on the back and belongs to either the motherboard or a discrete graphics card. As for laptops, HDMI is not available everywhere. Ultra-thin models usually don’t have one. There isn’t one on your MacBook, either. Producers expect the owners of such devices instead of HDMI video output to use USB-C with the appropriate adapter (to do in this situation, we tell further).

There are two types of HDMI. The most common scenario is HDMI “Mom” on your PC and HDMI “Mom” on your TV, which requires a single cable with HDMI “Dad” connectors on both ends. One end of the cable connects to the PC, the other to the TV. and that’s basically it. If you have more than one HDMI port on your TV, the connected computer is selected using the remote.

Sometimes the computer side has miniHDMI, which is smaller than the standard. In this situation, you need to look for a different type of cable. HDMI/miniHDMI (standard connector for TV, reduced for computer). Plug it in and it’s done.

You should always take into account the distance between the devices. The cable should be long enough to connect without straining.

Connecting Your Computer to Your TV. Step-by-step instructions

Place your laptop computer next to your TV, or make sure your desktop computer is close enough to pull the HDMI cable through. Both devices must be turned off.

On the back of your computer is an HDMI connector (see “Connecting Your Computer to a TV” on page 22). below). It looks a bit like a USB connector, but it’s not rectangular, and there will be the designation “HDMI” next to it. Connect the cable to your computer.

Note! The HDMI cable is the same at each end (see “HDMI cable is the same at each end”). below). No matter which side you plug it into your computer.

There is a panel on the front or side of or behind the TV next to the network cable. There you will find all sorts of buttons and input jacks (see. in the photo below). Connect the remaining free end of the HDMI cable to your TV through the HDMI connector you will find under the flap.

Turn on your TV. Use the “Source” button on your remote to choose from the menu offered, the input through which you connected the cord is usually HDMI 1 or HDMI 2.

Turn on your computer. It will now broadcast a “connection confirmation protocol” (mutual identification) with your TV. You should see information from your computer appear on your TV screen. You may have to reconcile a couple of changes on your computer. Use your mouse or touchpad to click the buttons in the usual way.

The TV is now the monitor for your computer. Make sure you select the “Full Screen” option on your computer.

Start the movie you want to watch. Move your mouse cursor off the screen so that the “Play” and “Pause” buttons are not blocking them. Don’t worry if you move the mouse again, they will appear again.

After the session is over, close the file containing the movie or video, and turn off the computer. Unplug the HDMI cable and select a different input by pressing the “Source” button on your TV.
