Let’s not beat around the bush. outwardly, the Xiaomi Yi Action Camera looks like a well-copied GoPro Hero, only without a monochrome display. Some elements are swapped, but it’s still the same monoblock rectangular form factor.

On the front there is a lens, a button for switching on and switching modes with indication. On the back side, under the caps, the battery, connectors and a microSD slot are hidden. What is the difference, how, for example, the 1920 × 1080 format differs from the 1920 × 1080 Ultra format? The frequencies are the same. And the resolution is an exact copy. Perhaps the answer lies in bitrate? No, and the bitrate is exactly the same in all the same formats, Ultra or not Ultra. Even the distribution of keyframes in streams is the same? except that the bitrate is spent on them a little more. So that is almost imperceptible. Maybe that’s the difference?

Again, no. But everything turned out to be very simple. The camera angle is the secret. The word Ultra in the name of the mode means a slightly wider viewing angle than in the same mode, but without the word Ultra. However, the way in which this wide angle is preserved in the video seems rather odd. The developer decided that the wide angle is more important than the absence of geometric transformations. He simply took a wide shot and flattened it horizontally to fit the panorama to standard sizes. Like this:

It turns out that by choosing the Ultra mode, you will either have to get used to flattened faces, or stretch the video horizontally in width, while losing detail. But then why did we shoot at Ultra Wide Angle? Unclear. Well, okay, let’s leave these Ultra-labels to marketers who like to use bright words to describe the most banal ideas in order to present them to a potential buyer as manna from heaven. Let’s get down to business.

The following should be added. Each of the formats has three more levels of settings. Namely, the quality of the encoding. High, Normal and Low. We will definitely return to this question, having studied the difference in the quality of video recorded in different modes. But be warned: this article will only use the highest quality video captured in High mode.

By the way, this whole table of 17 items can. and should. be doubled, since the camera has the ability to switch TV systems from NTSC to our “native” PAL system. Accordingly, with such a switch, the frame rate will change in all formats without exception. For example, 4K will have 25 frames per second, and 848×480 at the original 240p will “lose” as much as 40 frames per second, becoming 200p.

At the first glance at these freeze frames, I immediately remembered the feature of the previous version of the Yi action camera, which we talked about in the introduction to this article. Namely. too strong artificial blurring of the picture. Apparently, the developers realized their mistake. And in the new version, the cameras took and. oversharp the picture! That is, they made it too harsh, unnatural. Typically, this sharpening is used to enhance the contrast of the edges of objects so that, for example, a security camera gives a more readable picture of a license plate. But after all, in most of the modes with which our camera shoots, skipping lines is clearly used when reading from the matrix. This omission always leads to the appearance of ladders, steps at the boundaries of contrasting objects. What if we sharpen up even more? That’s right, the ladders on the same wires will become even more noticeable. What, in fact, happened.

Some modes still work better, sharping with dirty splashes and ladders in them are not very striking. Such modes in our case are 2560 × 1920 30p and 1920 × 1080 60p. But the first of these modes has an aspect ratio of 4: 3, which is not very convenient if the Honor has the 16: 9 aspect that is common today. It turns out that the only option remains the only one, 1920 × 1080 60p? Perhaps yes. However, for this article, we will still be shooting in the very first mode, 3840×2160 30p. After all, the 4K standard (by the way, 4K letters can be seen even on the camera body).

The other modes not mentioned are not at all interesting for everyday shooting: high-frequency Full HD 1920 × 1080 120p and ultra-high frequency HD 1280 × 720 240p have all the signs of blurring and low resolution. Of course, you can use these modes as rare spectacular inserts with strong slowdown. over, in high-frequency modes, sound is recorded along with the video, which is very rare.

But the main modes for everyday shooting are still recommended to be 3840 × 2160 30p and 1920 × 1080 60p. Of course, none of the readers is obliged to agree with what has been said. after all, everyone has their own quality standards and even more so the size of the frame.

The next question will be resolution. Due to the strong geometric distortions that our wide-angle camera gives, it will be possible to visually measure it only with the help of a part of the test chart printed on a 1-meter sheet of paper. Filming taken from different distances is subsequently superimposed in a video editor on a full-size version of the whole table until the size of the key element matches, which is taken as an answer.

The result is very good! 1400 HD 4K TV lines. Of course, in Full HD mode, the resolution turns out to be significantly lower than in “just Full HD” cameras, reaching 800 TV lines.

Let’s touch on another shooting mode that affects the change in the angle of view: shooting with the stabilizer on. As it turns out, the camera uses an electronic stabilizer. Read. software. We’ll evaluate its effectiveness later, but now let’s take a look at how much this stabilizer cuts the edges of the frame. Indeed, for software stabilization to work, a lot of free space is required at the edges of the matrix, hence the well-known crop.

Yes, this is exactly the effect of the activated stabilizer. the frame is cropped evenly from all sides, while there are no geometric distortions, as in the Ultra shooting modes.

This is where it is proposed to complete the study of formats and a preliminary assessment of the quality of shooting. over, so far it was only about shooting mostly static. But the camera in question is intended for completely different filming, in which there is a lot of movement. And any movement, especially if the camera is fixed on something moving, is, first of all, a shaking video. Which, although sometimes impressive with a plot, is suitable for viewing only conditionally.

The stabilizer, which is available in any self-respecting “full-fledged” video camera, is called upon to correct the shaking. First of all, we now mean optical stabilizers, which are an extremely complex system that consists of optics floating in a magnetic field. The strength of which, in turn, changes according to the signals of the position sensors. Thus, the position of the lenses is corrected and, accordingly, the alignment and smoothening of the image entering the matrix occurs. It’s hard to believe that it is hard to build such a system into an action camera that has a miniature size and, moreover, is periodically subjected to accelerations or impacts. If the size of such systems is reduced to microscopic ones and they are built into the corresponding chambers, then the efficiency of such systems will sharply decrease according to their size. So far, the optical stabilizer has been implemented only in cameras with a so-called pistol grip, here is one of the successful examples.

In our case, electronic stabilization comes to the rescue, that is, software. Its operation requires a powerful processor and a sufficient free area of ​​the matrix, on which the corrected image will “float”. We just saw the result of how the camera’s field of view narrows when stabilization is turned on. From this, a logical conclusion comes from this: such stabilization cannot be carried out in all shooting modes. For example, in 4K, when there is no free matrix area or the processor is not able to process such an array of information on the fly. That’s right, in our camera the stabilizer will not always turn on, not in any shooting mode. Below is a table that clearly shows such a possibility, depending on the selected mode.

Everything is as we said. Turning on the stabilizer becomes impossible in two cases: with a large frame size (the entire matrix is ​​read and there is no free area) and at a high frame rate (the processor will not be able to float 120 or 240 frames per second). But let’s finally evaluate the effectiveness of this kind of stabilization in the performance of our camera. The shooting was carried out in the mode with the maximum frame size at which the stabilizer can be turned on (2560 × 1920 30p). the third mode in the list.

Well, very good. Of course, it is best to melt the shaking image so far with the most complex optical stabilization systems operating on the gyroscope principle, which are an optoelectronic system (optics plus a matrix), which is suspended inside the camera body. But what we have is what we have. An electronic stabilizer built into an action camera is already a tremendous achievement, a progress in processor design.

Another issue is the rolling shutter (for more details, see the material Rolling shutter in video. a description of the defect, examples, explanations). It is much more difficult to overcome, since it is one of the features of the CMOS sensors used, where information is read line by line. The faster the reading goes, the lower the level of the rolling shutter. By using interlaced reading (address), you can achieve a reduction in the rolling shutter, but the image quality decreases.

Above, in the rollers with stabilizers, one could observe the very “jelly”, which is one of the manifestations of the rolling shutter. The jelly doesn’t seem too noticeable, even if not distracted by evaluating the stabilizer. The next shooting was carried out in the maximum mode for the camera 3840 × 2160 30p.

The original file is too large to be attached to the article, and it is unlikely that it will be useful to anyone. After all, it is clear from the presented video that the rolling shutter still makes itself felt, no matter how fast the new matrix is.
