Advantages of sound projectors (soundbars)

Because of this, there is no need to find space in your room for each of the components of a multi-channel (5.1 or 7.1) audio system. A review of new models of soundbars is presented in the article Best soundbars for small home cinema in a living room.

Connecting the JBL Soundbar to your TV through HDMI

This is the most common connection method. Its advantages:

  • The soundbar is turned on at the same time as the TV is powered on (t.е. soundbar does not need to be turned on separately)
  • The remote control is used to adjust the sound level on both devices
  • Better sound quality than optical and wireless connections.

You will need an HDMI cable and the TV must have an HDMI connector (ARC). As a rule, all modern (and not very modern) TV sets have it.

Connecting the soundbar to a Samsung TV through HDMI

To control the soundbar with the TV remote control and turn it on at the same time as turning on the TV, you can use Samsung’s proprietary technology. Anynet. Usually it is already active from the factory, so in order to get sound to play from the sound bar, do the following:

  • Plug one end of the HDMI cable into the HDMI OUT (TV ARC) connector on the JBL 2 soundbar.1 (similarly for other models)
  • The other is into the HDMI ARC input of your Samsung TV
  • Turn on your TV and the soundbar should turn on automatically.

If the sound is still coming from the TV speakers, go to the settings menu, go to Audio/Sound and select external speakers as the sound source.

Anynet is activated in the settings. Depending on the TV model, the paths may be as follows:

Home. Settings. General. External Device Control. Anynet. (HDMI CEC)

Home. Settings. System. Expert Settings. Anynet. (HDMI-CEC)

Connecting the soundbar to an LG TV through HDMI

  • Plug one end of the HDMI cable into the HDMI OUT (TV ARC) connector of the soundbar
  • Plug the other end of the HDMI cable into the HDMI ARC connector on your TV
  • Turn on the power of your devices
  • On your TV, go to “Settings” menu
  • Under “Audio”, find “Digital Audio Out” and set it to “Auto”
  • If necessary, install an external audio system instead of the TV speaker as the sound source
  • Turn on the Simplink option on your LG TV set so you can turn on the soundbar at the same time with the TV set.

Simplink is an HDMI control protocol for LG Smart TVs.

Connecting the soundbar to Sony, Xiaomi, Philips and other TVs via HDMI

Above we’ve considered step by step process of connecting soundbar to LG and Samsung TV sets. Connection to other manufacturers TV. Xiaomi, Sony, Philips, Haier, will be similar, the only difference will be the name of the items in the menu.

Using a single TV remote control to control all devices with HDMI

CEC technology (Consumer Electronics Control. Panasonic has Panasonic Viera Link, Samsung has Anynet, Sony has Bravia Theatre Sync, LG has SimpLink, Sharp has Aquos Link, etc.д.) is designed to allow the viewer to control all TVs connected to the TV using only an HDMI version 1 cable from one TV remote.4 and up and CEC-enabled devices. For example, we can connect Blu-ray player to TV and control player’s playback and menu with TV remote control. It supports joint on/off, receiver volume control, player playback and menu control.Modern televisions, receivers, Blu-ray or DVD players, sound projectors and audio projectors support HDMI ARC/CEC (Audio Return Channel) technology. whereby a television with an “HDMI IN (ARC)” port sends audio back to the receiver using the same HDMI cable that the receiver uses to send video to the television from its “HDMI OUT” port, allowing you to use only one cable and one TV remote control. The receiver/soundbar is source, so you should always connect its “HDMI OUT” output to the “HDMI IN (ARC)” input in your TV.From HDMI version 1.4 of May 22, 2009 Audio Return Channel (ARC) functionality is supported. Usually the TV has only one HDMI IN input with ARC support, so it is important to connect the receiver/soundbar or other signal source to this. And the sound can be played through the TV’s built-in audio system, or it can come back from this “HDMI IN” input (yes, exactly from input to output, although that sounds weird) of the TV through the same cable via a return audio channel to the “HDMI OUT” of the receiver/soundbar for playback through a higher quality external audio system. This can be a receiver, sound projector or other audio equipment. And thanks to HDMI CEC technology (Panasonic Viera Link, Samsung Anynet, etc), it can be installed on any television.д.) Allows to use only TV remote control to turn on/off and adjust the projector volume together.

The beauty of the ARC is that, as its name suggests, it allows us to send audio signals from any source connected to the TV through the same cable. For example, a receiver is connected to the “HDMI 2” input that supports ARC. Then we can connect Blu-ray player to HDMI 1, game console to HDMI 3 and set-top box to HDMI 4 and then we can play sound through receiver from any source. The easiest way to get audio off the TV is to take the HDMI port labeled ARC, and connect sources to the other TV inputs. That means you need to connect all signal sources to the TV set and connect the receiver with one HDMI cable to the “HDMI ARC” connector of the TV set.Important: In order not to confuse HDMI-CEC settings, the receiver must never be unplugged, that is put into standby mode. If a power failure occurs, you may need to reconfigure HDMI-CEC.The receiver is a full-fledged docking element between the player and TV set, if the latter is connected via HDMI, then conversion of different inputs and video scaling is possible.

Toslink (S/PDIF) optical interface with no remote control capabilityAlthough HDMI is capable of transmitting audio signals, not all equipment has an HDMI port. In these cases, you can only get digital stereo or compressed multichannel sound from the TV using the optical output to the sound projector or audio/video receiver. HDMI ARC/CEC doesn’t always work perfectly, so it’s potentially a more stable option, but there’s no control from the TV remote and you can’t automatically power on or use the audio device’s functions!A DVD player without an HDMI output can be connected directly to a sound projector with an optical cable, for example, and transmit “Dolby Digital” or “DTS” compressed multi-channel audio in maximum quality, leaving the decoding to the sound projector decoder. Connect video signal to your TV using three-wire component cable YUV, YPrPb and YCrCb.

How to connect the soundbar to the LG TV

LG televisions can boast excellent picture and sound thanks to the implementation of modern technology. Nevertheless, many TV owners, especially those with OLED screens, purchase additional acoustic equipment which can be used to achieve surround sound at home, with sound quality comparable to that of a movie theater. These can be home theaters or their more democratic analogues soundbars (powerful, but quite compact mono speakers with several speakers).

  • Better sound on your TV and other connected external devices.
  • Possibility of playing back audio and video content of various formats via external storage devices.
  • Ability to support mobile devices via Bluetooth.
  • Compact size (compared to a home theater) with comparable power and sound quality.
  • Intuitive control (by remote control or with some modern models by voice commands).

Which soundbar to choose for the LG TV set?

The main parameter of the soundbar you shall pay attention to while choosing is its power. It is important to correlate it to the dimensions of the room where your LG TV set is located and where you plan to install and connect the soundbar. If the room is quite spacious (over 55 square meters), you need to look for a 200 watt soundbar. In a room of 30-40 square meters you can install a 100-150 watt soundbar. A 60 watt soundbar will do for a small room (up to 20 square meters).

Important: in order to enjoy all sound nuances it is not recommended to make the soundbar volume higher than 70% of full power. So it is necessary to choose such model which can provide such sound level.

Before you connect the soundbar to the TV set it is necessary to install the panel properly, otherwise you won’t be able to achieve high quality surround sound. To do this is very easy. It all depends on the location of your LG TV. If it is placed on the special pedestal or a stand, then the soundbar shall be placed directly in front of it, making sure in advance that the panel will not obstruct the TV set screen and will not interfere with the TV set control by means of the remote control.

Some soundbar models can be mounted directly to the TV stand. If you place the panel inside a pedestal/stand, make sure it is pushed forward as far as possible and the sides and back walls do not interfere with the sound. It also goes without saying that there should be no foreign objects or obstacles in front of the soundbar, such as cabinet walls or doors.

Important: if the soundbar model you bought supports Dolby Atmos or DTS:X options at which the sound is reflected from the ceiling, you will have to refuse to place it inside the pedestal.

If your LG television set is on the wall, the best option is to place the soundbar right under it. Most varieties of modern wall mounts for TVs assume a similar arrangement and have additional mounts for the media panel.

Once you have positioned the soundbar, it’s time to start connecting the panel to your LG TV and setting all the necessary parameters.

Connecting the soundbar to an LG TV: step-by-step instructions

Soundbars are divided into two categories according to the way they are connected to the TV: active and passive.

An active soundbar is essentially an independent audio system that can be connected directly to the TV.

A passive soundbar can be connected to a TV exclusively with an AV receiver.

The most common way to connect soundbars to TVs using an HDMI interface. In rare cases, RCA or analog connectors are used for this purpose. Analog connectors will not be able to provide high quality sound, so resort to this method only in the most extreme cases. It is also undesirable to connect the sandbar to the TV using the headphone jack (miniJack-2RCA cable).

The most important advantage of the HDMI method is that in this case the Audio Return Channel (ARC) option is active. It means the soundbar switches on together with your LG TV-set, and the sound level on both devices shall be controlled with one remote control.

After the soundbar is connected, set the required parameters. To do this, you need:

Using the remote control enter the Settings menu.

Select Audio and set Digital Audio Out to Auto in the Audio section. Some LG TV models will also need to have the Simplink option enabled.

Also the way of connection of the soundbar to LG TV set by means of optical cable proved to be good. The sound quality is also optimal and is not affected by electromagnetic radiation, which can interfere with sound transmission. Connection is made using connectors labeled Optical Out (Digital Out on some models) on the TV and Optical In (Digital In) on the soundbar.

Another way to connect the active soundbar wirelessly. This method is suitable for owners of LG TV sets of modern models with Smart TV function. To connect the soundbar to the TV through Bluetooth, make sure that your TV model supports the LG Soundsync feature. You can do it in Settings Sound. Turn this option on, then a list of devices available for synchronization will appear on your LG TV screen. Select your soundbar from among them and set up the connection, following the instructions on the TV screen.

Important: Sometimes you may need to enter a password after you connect the soundbar to your TV. By default it is 0000 or 1111.

Selecting a soundbar

When you’ve learned that your old TV has either an optical or analog RCA audio output, it’s time to buy a soundbar.

When choosing, look for models where the audio inputs match the TV outputs. If your TV has at least an optical audio output, the soundbar will be easy to find on sale. And there are more and more models that only have an HDMI port, so you need to look carefully.

Among modern sound panels there are fewer options with analog RCA audio inputs than with optical connectors, but they are still easy to find. This is especially true of inexpensive sound panels priced at no more than 200.

In addition to, the right jacks, you need to think about a soundbar with virtual surround sound or 3D mode. Many of the more recent sound panels have learned how to do great three-dimensional surround sound from 5.1- or even 2.0-channel sources. In particular, DTS Virtual: X makes it seem as if the sound is coming from behind and from above, even when the sound is played in stereo (as it would be if the TV only had RCA analog audio outputs).

Press and hold down the (power). PAIRING button until you hear a voice prompt and the ( Bluetooth ) light flashes fast. The speaker system will enter into pairing mode. Perform the pairing procedure on the Bluetooth signal source to detect the speaker system.

To connect your phone to the TV via Bluetooth, follow these steps:

  • Make sure your TV has this function.
  • If you don’t have one, plug in a USB adapter that has Bluetooth.
  • Install the device synchronization app on your smartphone.
  • In the settings of your TV, turn on Bluetooth.

Connecting the JBL soundbar to your TV via HDMI

It is the most common way to connect. Its advantages:

  • The sound bar turns on at the same time as the TV is powered on (t.е. the soundbar does not need to be turned on separately)
  • Adjusting the sound level on both devices can be done with the same remote control
  • Better sound quality compared to optical and wireless connections.

You will need an HDMI cable and the TV should have an HDMI (ARC) connector. As a rule, all modern (and not so modern) televisions have it.

Connecting the Soundbar to your Samsung TV with HDMI

It is possible to control the soundbar with the TV remote control and start it simultaneously with turning on the TV set using Samsung’s proprietary Anynet technology. It is usually active already from the factory, so do the following to get the sound to play from the sound bar:

  • Plug one end of the HDMI cable into the HDMI OUT (TV ARC) connector on the JBL 2 soundbar.1 (similar for other models)
  • The other in your Samsung TV’s HDMI ARC input
  • Turn on the TV and the soundbar should turn on automatically.

If the sound continues to play from the TV speakers, go to the settings menu, go to Audio/Sound and select external speakers as the sound source.

Anynet is activated in the settings. Depending on the TV model, the paths may be as follows:

Home. Settings. General. Controlling external devices. Anynet. (HDMI CEC)

Home. Settings. System. Expert Settings. Anynet. (HDMI-CEC)

Connecting the soundbar to LG TV through HDMI

  • Plug one end of an HDMI cable into the HDMI OUT (TV ARC) connector of the soundbar
  • Plug the other end of the HDMI cable into the HDMI ARC connector on your TV
  • Turn on the power to the devices
  • On your TV, go to the Settings menu
  • Under Audio, find Digital Audio Out and set it to Auto
  • Set the sound source to be an external sound system instead of the TV speaker, if necessary
  • Turn on the Simplink option on your LG TV, so that the soundbar turns on at the same time as the TV.

Soundbars: let’s get into details

Despite the fact that soundbars have gained particular popularity in the last few years, this type of speaker system has existed for quite a long time. Attempts to improve the sound of flat-panel TVs were made literally immediately after their appearance on the market in the 1990s. over, special stands with built-in speaker systems were produced back in the era of tube CRT TVs.

However, with the general and mass transition to LCD, plasma and OLED panels, the need for compact and inexpensive solutions for quality sound has increased manifold. Indeed, the sound quality of modern televisions lags so far behind the quality of the image they show, that you can’t do without compensating for this difference with a speaker system. That’s why electronics manufacturers have rushed headlong into the production of soundbar-format loudspeakers.

The term “soundbar” consists of two English words. “sound” and “bar”, which can be literally translated as “sound bar”. It means horizontally placed acoustic system with the array of speakers, designed for placing below or above the TV screen. Depending on the design, the soundbar can produce either stereo sound or a full range of home theater channels.

Soundbars can be passive and active. Accordingly, the first type involves the use of an external amplifier, usually an AV-receiver. Currently, the popularity of passive models among manufacturers and buyers is not very high, they are more often used in installations with acoustics built into the wall. Passive models are usually a set of speakers to play two front and a center channel in a 5.1.

Today it is the active models, which include not only all necessary radiators, but also the whole set of electronics. processors, amplifiers, wireless modules and connectors for connection to signal sources and TV sets, that are in the greatest demand and popularity. That is what we will talk about in this article.

What criteria to choose a soundbar by?

First of all, it is necessary to realize that the soundbar is not capable to replace completely and adequately a good multichannel AC system or a stereo system, no matter what manufacturers and sellers say. You should buy this type of loudspeakers in case if you are consciously ready to make some compromises in sound quality. Though, in the recent years the soundbar designers learned to set them up in such a way, that the illusion of the full-fledged sound is very convincing.

Given the above, it makes sense to decide whether you have high demands for sound quality. If you need the music only for background listening, and the soundbar. In order to sound movies and games, and you do not want to buy a component home theater or stereo system, then modern models will satisfy your needs by 100%. Now on to the selection criteria.

As in most cases while choosing modern audio equipment it is necessary to understand that it is not always possible to trust the values, specified in the certificate, unless we are speaking about High End models. You can find both 20-30 watt and 300 watt values in the rating specifications of soundbars, and neither of them will be completely correct. Some manufacturers specify the peak power of built-in amplifiers for each channel, others for all channels together, some try to be honest and report values at normalized distortion. That is, the range of the figures given is quite large.

But the reality is the following. as a rule, rated capacity of amplifier modules built into the soundbar makes from 15 to 50 watt per channel. And further it all depends on the order of their inclusion, on whether each of them sounds with one or several heads, and on the total number of installed amplifiers. The sound pressure level produced by the soundbar will also be determined by whether the power of the amplifiers is limited to better match the speakers and reduce distortion.

A general rule of thumb when choosing is that if a manufacturer gives honest and conservative data on all the amplifiers installed in a model, without trying to “cast aspersions”, then its products can be safely trusted. As a whole, most of the soundbars are intended for sounding the premises with the area not more than 20 square meters.

Most models on the market can accept Dolby Digital, DTS, and PCM streams. In principle, this is more than enough for watching movies and videos. New models with Dolby Atmos playback should be taken seriously only if their acoustic configuration allows you to take advantage of this format in one way or another. That is a mandatory presence of speakers pointing to the ceiling, not to mention the possibility of discrete amplification of all channels.

Inputs and outputs

Basically for a full-fledged connection of the soundbar to the TV set you will need an HDMI port with ARC and CEC support, however if you only need to receive an audio stream from your TV set an optical digital input will be sufficient. all new TV sets today output sound via optics. If you intend to use the device to listen to music from a smartphone or PC, a wireless Bluetooth input is desirable. The presence of Wi-Fi is only really necessary when integrating the unit into a multi-room system or when you want to listen to music from streaming services.

Not all manufacturers disclose the characteristics and construction of dynamic heads, which are installed in their soundbars. As a rule, these speakers do not have a very powerful magnetic system, plus small size. However, with the right approach, their characteristics are matched as closely as possible to the volume in which they operate, as well as to the power performance of the amplifiers. By the way, it is a distinctive feature of all properly designed soundbars. it is impossible to overload them nowadays, when the maximum permissible level is reached the volume is gently limited. If, however, the manufacturer does provide details about the speakers used, it is better to opt for heads with composite or metal cones if you need more potential power.

Basically, the most elementary remote control with several buttons for volume control and switching of sound processing modes will be enough. Unless you need to integrate into a multi-room system, then the presence of a Wi-Fi module or your own wireless protocol is a must.

Here it is senseless to give advice, especially as most of the models of big manufacturers are designed by excellent professionals, and they know what they are doing very well. I must note that in recent years I have not yet come across a soundbar, the sight of which removes any desire to buy it.

But this criterion is very important. Despite of many examples of successful miniaturization the general rule is that the bigger the soundbar is, the better it will sound, all other things being equal. Only if its large size is not just to sell a more expensive model.

With or without subwoofer?

Definitely with a subwoofer. no electronic tricks will let the soundbar create the necessary pressure in the low-frequency range for the proper and adequate reproduction of the special effects in films and games. A big plus is that subwoofers are usually already perfectly matched to the center unit in terms of cutoff frequency and level at the factory, and wireless connectivity will make it easy to find the right place for the woofer module in the room.

Do you need additional speakers??

Yes, of course. A properly designed soundbar with a set of wireless surround sound satellites can almost completely replace a component home theater. Especially when it comes to the new WiSA-powered kits, which allow you to build a completely wireless 5.1 or 7.1.

Surprisingly, there aren’t many expensive soundbars left on the market today. This is quite understandable. the very concept of this type of speaker system involves saving. And not just the room space, but also the budget. When a certain price level is reached, buying a soundbar starts to lose all sense, unless we are talking about premium brands that charge for design and prestige. That’s why most of the major manufacturers try to keep the price reasonable and the most “advanced” models rarely cost more than 1000 Euros, with the price level of excellent mid-range models being around 300-500 Euros. Basically, this is the range of reasonable for a soundbar.
