IPad as second Windows USB monitor
Use the universal USB-C port on iPad Pro 11-inch and iPad Pro 12.9-inch (3rd generation) to charge your device, power other devices, and connect accessories such as cameras and displays.
Connect iPad Pro for Mac or another computer
You can plug iPad Pro into your Mac or PC to charge your device or sync content using iTunes.
First, identify the ports on your computer. If your computer is a newer model that has a Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) or USB-from port, connect it from the USB-C to USB-C cable included with the iPad Pro.
If your computer only has USB ports, you need a USB-A to USB-C cable to connect to the iPad Pro. One example is Belkin with a USB-to-USB C cable; many other certified USB brands available in your country or region may also work. The correct cable has connectors that look like this:
Charge iPad Pro
To charge the device, connect the supplied USB C cable to the device with USB-C port and the included 18W power supply. Then plug the adapter into an outlet.
If you have a higher-power USB-C power adapter. such as the one that came with your Mac laptop. you can use it with your iPad Pro, and you might see faster charging. You can also charge iPad Pro by connecting it to the USB-C port on your computer.
Connecting to other devices
The USB port on the iPad Pro allows you to connect to a variety of devices. For example, you can connect a digital camera or a USB-C apple to an SD card reader. to import photos to iPad Pro. Other USB devices you can connect to iPad Pro include the following:

- Audio interfaces and Midi devices
- USB to Ethernet adapters
An adapter may be required depending on the device. Here are some common connections:
- If the device you are connecting to has a USB-C port, all you need is a cable with USB-C connectors on each end, such as the cable that comes with the iPad Pro.
- If your device has a USB-C connector, you can connect it directly to the iPad Pro and USB-C port.
- If your device has a USB connector, you can connect it to Apple with a USB-C to USB adapter, and then connect the adapter to iPad Pro and USB-C port.
HDMI displays or TVs
You can connect your device to an HDMI display or TV with a USB-C to HDMI adapter. HDMI 2.0 adapters can output video from iPad Pro at 4K and 60Hz.
The Apple USB-to-Digital AV Multiport Adapter is also compatible with iPad Pro. This adapter allows video output from iPad Pro in 4K and 30Hz.
the iPad Pro can output Dolby digital plus audio streams over HDMI, but not Dolby Atmos. Also note that iPad Pro will play HDR10 or Dolby content over HDMI when an HDMI 2.0 adapter that supports these formats becomes available.
When you use the Apple USB-to-Digital AV Multiport Adapter with iPad Pro, its home screen and apps appear on HDMI displays at 1080p at 60Hz. When you start playing a video, the resolution switches according to the content, up to 4K @ 30Hz. Turn on the M Games option on iPad Pro in Settings Display.
Connecting to displays and monitors
The USB port on iPad Pro connects to external displays so you can watch videos, play performances, and more on the big screen. Depending on the display device you are connecting to, you may need an adapter.

The Apple Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) cable has a lightning bolt symbol. to distinguish it from USB C cable.
How to make iPad a second monitor
Sidecar is one of a slew of innovations that expands the ecosystem capabilities of Apple devices. Unlike the Duet Display app, which also displays an image from a Mac on the iPad and allows you to interact with computer elements on a touch screen, Sidecar is much more functional and useful. To turn iPad into another monitor, you just need to follow one sequence of actions that will take you less than a minute. In the future, you will connect the tablet to the Mac without any problems, since it is enough to do it once, and you will remember everything.
- Both iPad and Mac must be signed in to the same Apple ID.
- To use iPad as a monitor, simply place it near your MacBook, iMac, or other Apple computer.
- After that, click the AirPlay icon in the top menu bar on your Mac, then select the iPad connection option. it will appear in the list of monitors.
- The iPad will now be an extension of the Mac screen. You can move windows to it, and also use it as a normal display.

After choosing iPad, it will turn into a second monitor
I liked that, if necessary, you can display only one application on the screen. for this you need to hold the full screen icon in the window of the desired application.
Can I use iPad for one specific app with Mac
iPad idle? Turn your tablet into a second monitor!
Last year Apple showed us the new iPadOS and macOS Catalina. Among the many new features, it makes sense to highlight the Sidecar option. This technology allows iPad to be used as an external display for Mac. For a long time, I treated this function more like a toy, but when I had to work from home from morning to evening, I realized that it would be nice to have another monitor at my disposal. The large 30-inch, alas, remained in the office, did not have time to pick it up. Just at the end of last year I took a 7th generation iPad (which is a “budget” 10.2-inch). it’s time to try this feature.
If your iPad is idle too, it’s time to make it work.!
Mac with macOS Catalina
With the Mac, too, everything is not so simple. As in the case of the iPad, for some reason Apple decided to limit the number of computer models that can connect to the tablet via Sidecar:
- MacBook Pro (2016) and later;
- MacBook (2016) and later
- MacBook Air (2018) and later
- iMac (2017) and later and iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, Late 2015)
- iMac Pro;
- Mac mini (2018) and later
- Mac Pro (2019).
I have a 2012 MacBook Pro Retina that clearly doesn’t fit the Sidecar. There is one way to get around this limitation on the web, but after the release of macOS Catalina, it stopped working. Alternatively, some suggest installing some kind of left-handed patch. I tried it and after that all the icons on the top bar disappeared on the MacBook Pro, including Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, rebooting did not help. I had to restore the system. So if you really need this feature badly, you’ll have to fork out for a new Mac.
Which Mac and iPad support Sidecar
Unfortunately, this feature does not work on all Macs. There are minimum system requirements for the Sidecar app.
iPad with iPadOS 13
It turns out that not every iPad can be connected to a Mac via Sidecar. Apple Pencil compatibility is key to connectivity.
- iPad Pro. All Models
- iPad (6th generation) and later
- iPad mini (5th generation)
- iPad Air (3rd generation)
How Sidecar works
The iPad can be used not only as a second screen or monitor for one application (I brought Telegram there so that only a text editor and a browser could be left on the main Mac monitor). The function also allows you to duplicate the contents of the Mac screen. To do this, return to the AirPlay menu as a blue rectangle while using Sidecar. And choose the screen mirroring option.
When using the iPad as a “backup” for the main monitor, a side menu with control keys appears on it. It has Command and Shift, as well as other modification keys, allowing you to select commands with the tap of your finger or with the Apple Pencil. That is, if you want, you can take an iPad, lie down on the bed and work on it, just like on a Mac. Useful if you, for example, use a 27-inch iMac. you can’t put such a computer on your lap.
Side Menu on iPad when used with Sidecar
One of Sidecar’s unique features is the ability to display the Touch Bar on your iPad (even if your MacBook doesn’t have one). All programs that have functional touch keys will display the corresponding buttons directly on the tablet screen.
Many people have different attitudes towards Sidecar, but in the end everyone agrees that the MacBook sometimes needs a second portable screen.
IPad and Mac Tips
Although Sidecar can be used wirelessly (requires Wi-Fi connection), the function only works correctly up to 10 meters away. It’s much easier to place your iPad next to your Mac using a stand and have another monitor at your disposal. Here is an example of such a stand, but there are a lot of them on the Web now, you can choose which one you like. By the way, share a photo of your setup in the comments or in our Telegram chat (it’s even more convenient there), maybe others will take note of something (and me too).
Option to use iPad as a second display
Many people buy themselves an iPad Pro for 60-100 thousand rubles, and it seems to me that using a tablet as a second monitor is a good way to recoup your investment. Nevertheless, when we work at a computer, the tablet mostly lies next to or in another room on the couch, and so it will always be in business.

iPhone or iPad as a second display for a Windows computer. How to do it for free?
If you lack the size of a standard PC display (this is especially true if you are using a laptop with a small display diagonal), then it can be expanded with the screens of the iPhone or iPad. Read how to do this in this article.
To expand the Windows PC workspace, we will use the free Spacedesk service. A server-side program is installed on the computer, and a browser is used in the smartphone instead of the client.
After completing simple settings, joining the same Wi-Fi network and starting the service, you will receive an extended desktop. The operating speed is quite high and the latency is minimal.
Limitations
Only Windows PC can act as a server part. For some reason, the developers have not released a version of the software for macOS. But iOS / Windows Phone / Android devices, Surface tablets, Mac and PC can act as an auxiliary screen. They must have Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer or Safari browser installed.

Installing the Air Display server on the computer and the client program on the iPad
In this example, the server will be installed on a Windows 7 PC. The installation is straightforward. the only thing you need to do is approve the installation of display drivers as requested by Avatron Software and reboot after the drivers are installed.
While the computer is rebooting, install yourself applications on the iPad. If you run it for the first time, it will offer you instructions on how to connect to your computer. If you are already familiar with the application, just leave it open and switch back to your computer in order to launch the Air Display application already on it.
In theory, everything should go smoothly. But if you still get an error message, you will need to switch your host’s DNS server from the default settings (your provider) to publicly available Open DNS or Google DNS servers. If there was no error message, it’s time to start connecting iPad to your computer.
Right-click on the Air Display icon to access the context menu. In addition to the standard menu items, you should see your iPad’s name.
If you do not see the tablet on the network, then you need to check all the connections again and whether you are connected to the correct network. If the device is shown on the network, then just click with the mouse on it.
As soon as you clicked on it with the mouse on the computer, the connection icon should start blinking on the tablet itself. After that, your desktop should start flashing and switch from Aero Theme to Basic.
If you’re working on a single monitor, the iPad’s screen should be on the right side by default. If you are working with multiple monitors, the tablet screen will be on the right side of the first monitor. If you’re working with two monitors, and the one on the left side is and the one on the right is, then the new iPad screen will sit right in the middle between them. If your machine has three monitors, then the iPad monitor will be between the leftmost and middle.
But you can easily choose the location for the additional monitor yourself. To do this, right-click again on the Air Display icon, select Display Arrangemen in order to move the monitor to the location you specified.
After you have configured the location of your additional monitor, you can use it as intended.
How to use iPad as a second monitor on Mac and PC
The iPad is quite functional, many people use it in combination with a keyboard as a netbook when traveling, as an e-reader, gaming station, etc. etc. In addition to all of the above, there is another opportunity to test the iPad and squeeze as much out of it as possible. It copes pretty well with the role of an additional monitor and connects not only to a Mac, but also to a PC.
Such a small monitor can be a good haven for your messengers, color palette when working with Photoshop, interface for applications and other useful widgets.
In order to turn your iPad into a secondary monitor, you will need:
iPad.
2. Computer with MacOSX or Windows.
3. Wi-Fi network.
4. App for iPad Air Display (costs 9.99 in the App Store).
5. Air Display application for computer (free).
If you are unable to connect to Wi-Fi, you can use the Ad-Hoc connection between iPad and computer.
Taking advantage of the additional benefits of Air Display
In addition to simply using the iPad as a second monitor, the app has some additional really useful features.
In addition to simply extending your desktop, you can duplicate it. To switch to “mirror” mode, you need to right-click on the application icon, select Options, and then Mirror Mode.
Also, do not forget about the iPad touchscreen, which continues to function as usual. This means that any application that will be moved to the tablet like a second screen can be controlled by touch.
Finally, you can drag and drop various questionnaires and other forms onto it and fill them out using the on-screen keyboard. For example, you are working on a computer and would like your client to fill out the required electronic form. To do this, you just need to drag it to the iPad and hand it to it. While he fills it out, you can finish your job.
How to use iPad as a second monitor?
If you have a MacBook and want more screen real estate, here’s how you can use your iPad as a second monitor.
There used to be a few solutions with which you could use your iPad as a monitor, for example over a Wi-Fi connection. This method was not the worst, but the inevitable delay prevented the full use of the Apple tablet. However, the situation has changed.
Now you can connect your iPad directly to MacBooks to use your tablet as a second monitor with a wired connection that will help you get rid of lags and give you better performance than ever before. If you’re looking for capable uses for your old iPad, read our article: Five uses for your old iPad.
In addition to connectivity, you need software and the best you can use to do this is the Air Display 3 app, which we have tested many times. The closest alternative remains “Duet Display”.
Here’s how to set up Air Display 3 and use iPad as a second monitor.
Setting up your iPad as a second screen for your MacBook isn’t the most difficult task, there are a few steps you’ll have to go through before you can finally get it.
First, you need to download the iPad app, Air Display 3, which costs around 14.99. An expensive proposition to be fair, but if you’re going to use your tablet as a second monitor all the time, it’s worth it.
Second, you must download Air Display to your computer. To do this, just go to the official website of the developer and download the free version of the Air Display host program. You will need to provide an email address and some other information, and then you will receive a download link.
After the installation is complete, a reboot is required, but once you download and install the host program on your computer, you just need to connect the Lightning cable to your MacBook from your iPad and that’s it.
With Air Display 3, you can also use Wi-Fi wireless, which is easy to set up too. Just click on the Air Display 3 shortcut in your MacBook’s menu bar and choose iPad from the list. To do this, you must first enable the Air Display 3 application on your iPad, the same must be done for a wired connection.
Remember that when you use Air Display 3 and connect iPad as a second monitor, the program can change the screen resolution of your MacBook, to return everything to its place, go to “System”. “Settings”. “Display” and set the previous resolution.
When you’re done, you can use your iPad as a monitor in a matter of moments. It’s a very handy solution that requires little or no effort, but I’ve had trouble finding an iPad stand that doesn’t look silly or weird. This is something you will encounter too, although it can be a little more difficult if you are combining your tablet and laptop on the go or if there is not enough space on your desktop.
Configuring Multiple Monitor Modes
Particularly important are the “multiple displays” settings, for which fig. 11 shows all possible options:
Consider 4 (four) options for two screens that are available in the Windows 10 operating system:
- Duplicate these screens
- Expand these screens
- Show only on 1
- Show only 2
Setting audio playback modes
After connecting and setting up an external monitor, it remains for us to adjust only the sound so that it sounds “correctly” through the external speakers connected to the adapter.
To do this, right-click on the speaker icon in the lower right corner of the taskbar. In the context menu that appears, select “Playback Devices” (Fig. 12).
Next, select the connection option where our external monitor is indicated. In this case, this is an Acer monitor, so click on the line where this monitor is indicated (Fig. 13). It doesn’t matter that in this case we connect sound, not video.
And it is important to indicate that the sound should be played through the port where the external monitor is connected, since we connected the speaker connector to the HDMI-VGA adapter (Fig. 7), where we also connected an external monitor (Fig. 5).
On this connection of an external (second) monitor and its setup in Windows 10, in general, is completed. You can now use a second external monitor in accordance with the selected option for its connection and use.
1 Duplicate these screens
This option is highlighted by number 1 in Fig. 11. means that the picture on the second monitor will be identical to the first one. Everything that happens on the main, first monitor will be automatically duplicated on the second external monitor.
As a rule, the sizes and resolutions on the primary (first) and external (second) monitors are different. Therefore, in order to achieve the coincidence of pictures on the first and second monitors, the Windows system automatically makes the picture with the resolution, the worst of the two monitors. That is, the picture quality on both monitors will be the same as it would be on one of them, which has the worst video playback quality.
This mode is most often used for wide slideshows or any other content displayed on the main monitor.
Let’s say a presenter demonstrates slides and comments on them, and listeners see a similar image on the screen of an external second monitor. Also, often in this case, a multimedia projector acts as an external second monitor, which projects an image on a large screen for the convenience of its demonstration to the general public.
4 Show only on the second screen
The option (shown by number 4 in Fig. 11) also speaks for itself. The image will be visible only on the second external monitor, and the main monitor will be turned off, as it were.
This option is used if the laptop is used in the system unit mode, when all work is carried out only from a large external monitor, and not on a small laptop screen.
True, in this case, you will also have to connect an external keyboard and an external mouse to the laptop, that is, “in full” turn the laptop, which already has all the built-in devices, into a system unit to which you need to connect external devices.
Also, this option is used by those for whom, for one reason or another, the main monitor does not work, and there is no opportunity to repair the laptop, or it already makes no sense due to its obsolescence. In this case, the use of an external monitor can prolong the life of such a laptop for a long time.
For a stationary PC, this option allows you to display the image only on the second additional monitor, if it is needed for one reason or another, which cannot be remembered right away. Most often, after all, on a stationary PC, they use the three previous options.
open the Projection panel in Windows 10.
We connect an external monitor to a laptop via the HDMI port
So, we have a laptop with an HDMI port (Fig. 1).
We need to connect an external monitor to it using a cable and VGA connector.
All the operations described and shown in the pictures below must be done with the laptop turned off and with the external monitor turned off, so as not to damage anything when connecting.
To connect a monitor with VGA input, you need an HDMI-VGA adapter (Fig. 2). It is a pity, of course, that the adapter is not white for a white laptop, but here, as they say, it is better to have a functional and working thing than a beautiful and non-working thing. Therefore, a black adapter is also suitable.
How to Use Your iPad as a Second Monitor (on Windows & Mac)
Then we connect the HDMI-VGA adapter to the laptop’s HDMI connector (Fig. 3).
In the next step, you will need a wire coming from an external monitor with a VGA connector at the end, for subsequent connection to an HDMI-VGA adapter (Fig. 4).
So, we connect these 2 connectors together and secure the connection, for which we carefully and without much effort rotate the screws located on both sides of the VGA connector (Fig. 5).
It seemed that this was all, because the monitor is now connected.
However, let’s not forget that not only the video signal, but also the audio signal is transmitted through the laptop’s HDMI port. Therefore, we will prepare sound speakers for connecting them to the same HDMI-VGA adapter (Fig. 6). It is also advisable to connect the speakers in the off state, although this is not as important for them as for an external monitor.
The audio jack is located on the opposite side from the one where we connected the external monitor’s VGA connector (Fig. 7).
The solution will expand your Mac or PC screen in a minute
To start using iDisplay, you need to download applications for a mobile device and a computer from the links at the beginning or end of the material and launch them.
The mobile application will immediately show the options to which you can connect via wired and wireless connection.
Program settings on iPhone, iPad or Android are minimum. You can turn on and off sounds and prompts, and select the image quality or resolution.
There are only two options. high for performance devices and low for maximum speed.
On a Mac or PC, you can select the secondary display mode. It will turn out to either duplicate the image of the main monitor, or use it to expand the workspace. each option is relevant depending on the scenario used.
Here it will turn out to turn off control using a mobile device if iDisplay is used for educational purposes or there is simply no point in the possibility. And fine-tune the image transmission if the standard parameters do not suit you.
Personal experience of using the program and conclusion
The quality of iDisplay performance is highly dependent on the computer used and partly on the mobile device.
I tested the solution on a bundle of MacBook Pro 13 “2015 in the base, iPhone 7 and iPad Air 2. In wireless mode, I could not fully use the additional monitor at high and low resolutions.
In wired, I settled on performance at low resolution.
I have not found applications for using a 4.7-inch iPhone in this bundle. in 99% of cases it is easier to use iOS itself.
The 9.7-inch iPad gave more interesting results. you can display any additional information on it to work directly from the Mac, watch YouTube, and so on.
IDisplay usage scenarios may vary. But they are united by the enthusiasm of the user. Most won’t bother.
As for productivity, in order to increase it in my work scenarios, I see only the installation of full-fledged monitors to connect to a laptop at home and in the office. But it’s costly.
A smartphone or tablet in their role changes the use, but does not give the desired increase in the speed of work.
IDisplay Review. Use your iPhone and iPad as a second Mac screen
There is never a lot of screen space. Therefore, every now and then there is a desire to connect an additional display to the computer in order to start working faster and earn more or just for fun. With iDisplay, you can turn your iPhone or iPad into a monitor.
Download iDisplay:
The application produces up to 60fps, depending on the Wi-Fi congestion, the performance of the desktop solution, as well as the relevance of the mobile device.
In this case, you can control what is happening on the screen not only with the help of computer manipulators, but also through the touch screen.
The mobile device can connect to the stationary both wired and wirelessly.
In this case, in the first case, a 30-pin connector from the distant past, modern Lightning and even USB Type-C installed on current Macs can be used.
In the second case, devices are used that are in the range of one Wi-Fi network.
Unfortunately, today only a wireless connection works on Android. But the developers promise wired support soon.
It takes a long time to set up a connection between a computer and a mobile device via iDisplay.
The app automatically adjusts the connection and adjusts the resolution to be used on the secondary monitor based on picture quality or maximum performance.
Universal app for all platforms
If there isn’t enough room on your Mac or PC screen, don’t rush to buy a separate add-on monitor.
The solution could be an iPhone or iPad (and even Android), which can be turned into a computer display using iDisplay.
To do this, you need an iPhone or iPad based on iOS 8 or later, or a device running Android 4.0 or later, as well as a Mac from OS X 10.9 or a PC on Windows XP (32 bits only), Windows Vista (32 and 64 bits ), Windows 7 (32 & 64 bit), Windows 8 and Windows 10.
