Do I need to clear the “Other” section?
IOS has a special feature that automatically removes unnecessary data from the “Other” section if necessary (for example, if there is not enough space to download an application or other content).
In this case, only those files that the system considers absolutely useless or renewable will be deleted from the storage, and these include far from all digital garbage that is stored on your smartphone or tablet.
At the same time, Apple does not provide the user with tools for self-cleaning of the “Other” section and, moreover, prohibits third-party applications from doing this.
Therefore, the salvation of the drowning is in the hands of the drowning themselves. Below you will find several methods for cleaning the “Other” section on the iPhone and iPad of varying degrees of efficiency and labor intensity. for some it will be enough to regularly get rid of the main garbage, and someone will occasionally prefer to carry out general cleaning with dusting in all corners of the system.

As mentioned above, detailed statistics on the use of the built-in iPhone or iPad storage can be found both in the iTunes desktop client (download), and directly on the device itself.
What is “Other” on iPhone and iPad
Until 2015, this section of the iDevice storage was filled with a huge amount of unsorted data, it was stored: all correspondence with attached attachments, calendars, reminders, notes, contacts, program data, iOS settings and much more. Therefore, if your gadget has iOS 8 or an earlier version of the operating system, then the amount of space occupied by the “Other” section can reach any size.
With the release of iOS 9, the situation has improved significantly, now the “Other” section includes:
- Data about the device and the iOS itself;
- Software updates;
- Siri voices;
- Unloaded files;
- Results of failed or interrupted synchronization;
- Originals of photos with applied filters;

Radical methods of clearing iPhone memory are also dangerous pitfalls. So, if your device has been jailbroken, it will most likely be removed. And you will have to restore the firmware, and then repeat the hack. Read more about this situation in the article How to remove everything from iPhone.
Plus, Activation Lock can turn your mobile device into a brick if you can’t remember the password you want. Use these methods only when absolutely necessary and with complete confidence in your abilities.
Clearing Safari History
It is recommended to start a thorough cleaning of the iPhone by deleting the history of visits and cookies. To clean the browser you need to do:
- In “Settings” go to Safari.
- Activate the function “Clear history and data”.
A data value of zero indicates that the web browser is completely cleared. It is worth noting that the above steps will not affect Safari in any way.

- Go to “Settings”.
- Select “Photo and Camera”.
- Set the switch of the “Upload to My Photo Stream” option to the inactive position.
Simple steps will free up megabytes of memory.
Radical methods. reset iPhone to factory settings
There are two ways to completely erase an iPhone: on the smartphone itself or using iCloud. Let’s consider them in more detail.
This is the simplest way, in which all processes are terminated, freeing up RAM. In addition, the cache accumulated in browsers and applications is cleared. Rebooting completely from the cache will not get rid of, although it will reduce it.
Download large app
This unconventional method is suitable for iPhone owners whose memory is full. Its essence is to start downloading software, games or movies, the volume of which exceeds the free space in the phone’s memory. Finding that the loaded object does not have enough memory, iOS will begin to clear space for it on its own, removing temporary files and other garbage. After installation, this software can be uninstalled.
IOS update via iTunes
It is very convenient to update the iPhone via Wi-Fi networks, but the procedure is accompanied by the creation and saving of temporary files, which are partially deposited in the gadget’s memory. For this reason, it is recommended to install iOS via iTunes. This will free up memory as much as possible, since the firmware is unpacked on the PC.
Removing unused apps and games
Before taking drastic measures to clear your memory, go through the tabs of the main screen. There are almost certainly many outdated games and programs that have not been launched for a long time. Check old folders and destroy software junk. Thus, it will turn out to put things in order in the iPhone memory and free up space. There are different ways to uninstall apps on iPhone.
Clearing the Other section of iPhone storage
Faced with the problem of lack of free space on the iPhone, many users turn to its storage settings in search of applications, files and data that can be deleted. Among the categories presented in this section, there is “Other”, which often takes up as much, if not more, than iOS itself. You won’t be able to clean it with standard means, you can only find out what it consists of. These are the cache, logs and other resources necessary for the correct functioning of the operating system, the size of which changes in accordance with its needs. And yet, there is a solution, albeit a very radical one.
Important! Each of the methods we have discussed below for cleaning up the Other folder involves deleting all data from the iPhone. It will be possible to restore them only if a backup was previously created (local on a PC or in iCloud).
Restore via iTunes
You can only clear “Other” on iPhone by cleaning the entire system, and the easiest way to do this is with iTunes for PC by performing a restore. The procedure itself involves downloading and installing the current version of iOS (if you wish, you can install the current version instead), but before proceeding with its implementation, you should create a backup copy. only in this case it will be possible to return previously used applications and personal data. The disadvantages of this method are obvious. the need to connect a mobile device to a computer and the time spent both on the so-called reset and on setting up the system upon completion. But as a result, the iPhone storage will be completely cleared, and the “Other” folder will take up a minimum of space. Unfortunately, you won’t be able to erase it completely. To find out more about all the nuances and solve the problem voiced in the title of the article, the instruction presented at the link below will help.
In addition to Apple’s proprietary software solution, restoring the operating system, which includes cleaning and categories of data “Other” on the iPhone, can be performed using several third-party applications. The most effective of them were considered by us in a separate article.
Removing content and settings
If you do not want or do not have the ability to connect your iPhone to a PC to restore it, a similar procedure described above can be performed on the device itself. using iOS tools. To do this, you need to erase the content and settings, having previously taken care of creating a backup copy of the data (the system itself will offer to save them in iCloud). You should also turn off Find My (formerly called Find My iPhone). The data reset itself will not take much time, but upon completion, you will need to perform the first system setup and restore from a backup. As in the previous case, “Other” will not be completely cleared, but it will take up significantly less space (on average, the volume of this folder is reduced by up to two times). We considered this procedure in more detail in a separate article, it also tells about alternative options for resetting the settings, one of which can be performed remotely (via any browser).
Unfortunately, there are no other methods for clearing the Other folder on iPhone other than restoring iOS and resetting its settings along with all saved content.

Is iOS 14 slowing down? How to get back (rollback) on iOS 13
The first beta version of iOS 14 has delighted many iPhone owners who risked an upgrade. There are many innovations, most of the new functions work stably, and the overall speed of the system is adequate. However, some users have already regretted the transition to the beta version of iOS 14, as its stability is much lower compared to the current versions of iOS 13. In this tutorial, we talked about how to properly roll back from iOS 14 beta to iOS 13.
Important! The general rule of thumb for a rollback that preserves all data is that you must have an iPhone backup created with iOS 13. When you rollback from iOS 14 to iOS 13, you can only restore your iPhone from that backup. A copy created already under iOS 14 will not work. it will not be possible to recover.
If there is no such backup, then downgrading from iOS 14 to iOS 13 will result in the loss of all data on the iPhone.
How to revert (rollback) from iOS 14 to iOS 13
Connect iPhone to computer and launch iTunes (Finder on macOS Catalina and Big Sur).
Put iPhone into recovery mode. This is done differently on different iPhone models:
iPhone 6s and older
- Press and hold the Home and Power buttons at the same time for about 15 seconds. until the iPhone is detected in recovery mode.
iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus
- Turn off your iPhone. Press and hold the Power button and the Volume down button at the same time for about 10 seconds. until the message that the iPhone is being detected in recovery mode appears.
iPhone 8 and newer
- Turn off your iPhone. Press the volume up button and the volume down button alternately, and then hold down the “Power” button until the message that iPhone is found in recovery mode appears.
When iPhone is successfully put into recovery mode in iTunes (or Finder in macOS Catalina and Big Sur), a notification window will appear. Select the “Restore” option in it and agree to the operation.
Wait for the restore to complete. It usually takes about 15 minutes.
When the restore completes successfully, iTunes (or Finder) will prompt you to restore from the backup. Select this option to restore iPhone data from a previously saved backup. Once again, we note that the backup must be made under iOS 13. Otherwise, it will not be possible to restore to it.
The restore process from a backup takes up to 10 minutes. After completing it, you can use the iPhone running iOS 13 again.
The final and stable version of iOS 14 will be released in the fall. In addition, starting in July, Apple will release public beta versions of iOS 14. Most often, their stability is higher than that of the tested builds for registered developers.
