Mountain Lion: How to Change Webcam Resolution

I recently received my first MacBook Pro. I would like to change the resolution of the built-in webcam, because my daily GoToMeeting goes through 1-2Gb traffic and there is no discount for my GoProvider for my connection.

The GoTo software has settings to change the resolution. How can i do this?

  • Is there a preferences / system preferences simulator for macOS / iOS support?
  • Sync OSX Preferences and Settings with iCloud
  • The time zone is for the Quiet, and in the east. Gray.
  • How to change the lock screen background image in Lion 10.7.4?
  • How to Prioritize Wi-Fi Networks on IPhone
  • How to switch terminal options with keyboard shortcut?
  • How to remove the launcher?
  • Bootcamp Windows 10 Display settings are not saved across restart

Apple (or a third party) should write a utility to let you dial in the internal resolution of the internal camera, but as far as I know they are not yet available.

You can work around this by combining the output from your webcam into another program that processes the camera stream and “re-publishes” it on your Mac as a virtual camera (also called a pseudo camera) that will be available for use in other applications on your Mac.

How To Change The Resolution Of A Webcam

This is how I did it. I tested this solution under OS X 10.8. It also works under OS X 10.6. (I’d bet this probably works in 10.7 as well.)

Download free webcam utility (donation) for CamTwist Studio webcam.

Install the browser in 32-bit mode. (Why? Since the Adobe Flash plugin must be running in 32-bit mode to Access the CamTwist VA.) To do this, go to Finder, find the web browser app, do Get Info and check the Open in 32.bit mode “. Don’t launch your web browser.

  • Open CamTwist Studio, go to Settings, go to the Devices tab, select your device, then Use the Force camera resolution setting to force whatever resolution you prefer. (Suggest 320 x 240 for low bandwidth internet connections).
  • Then you will need to define “Setup” in CamTwist studio. Follow the steps in the main CamTwist window: double click “WebCam” in the column “Sources”.
  • Go to step 5 in the main Cam Twist window. select your camera device in the Settings column:

Open Preview from the Tools menu. A window should appear showing you a live stream from your camera device.

(Optional) If you want, let’s play with many of the cool effects available in CamTwist, such as the “Comic Book” shown here:

  • You are now ready to launch your web browser (in 32-bit mode). Most web chat / meeeting services (such as GoToMeeting) use Adobe Flash for processing. When you configure your camera settings for a chat, you should see a new “camera” device called “CamTwist Studio”. If you choose this device, your stream should be a resized 320×240 stream (or whatever size you choose) with a low resolution, plus any effects you add to CamTwist.

CamTwist “virtual” device should also be available in most other programs that use Mac OS X Core services, ie Skype and many other applications. (But not all. For example, this does not work with FaceTime.)

Focusing

The second most important parameter of the webcam. There are two types of focusing: automatic and manual.

  • Automatic focusing. The princIPle of autofocus operation is as follows: if the subject accidentally leaves the field of focus, the system automatically adjusts the optics so that the picture becomes sharp again. The autofocus webcam transmits the best quality image. Autofocus is usually absent in inexpensive webcam models.
  • Manual focus. The word “manual” speaks for itself, the focus has to be adjusted manually by rotating the lens ring.

Matrix type

Perhaps one of the most important parameters for choosing a webcam. The type of matrix entirely depends on the quality of the picture when transferring photos, data, since the bandwidth of the Internet channel does not always decide everything. As a rule, manufacturers equIP webcams with CCD and CMOS matrices. The most widespread in the segment of private webcams is the CMOS matrix, since it is a cheaper analogue of the CCD matrix. Webcams equIPped with CCD-matrices have: high image quality, improved color reproduction and low noise. CCD cameras are mainly used in surveillance systems. Lee, you shouldn’t be negative about the CMOS matrix, since they have almost caught up with the image quality of the CCD matrix.

Resolution

The parameter indicates what maximum photo resolution the webcam has. In the matter of choosing this outdoor device, this is just the case when you shouldn’t chase high performance. A perfectly acceptable resolution for conferences is 640×480, and for photo mode. 1280×1024.

Optical zoom

The presence of a zoom allows you to zoom in or out of the subject, which is very useful, since the webcam can be installed too close or far in the process of organizing a workplace or leisure place. The optical zoom ratio indicates how many times you can change the scale of the survey.

Viewing angle

The angle of view indicates how much area will be captured in the frame and depends on the physical size of the sensor and the optics of the webcam lens. The higher the viewing angle, the more freedom of movement in front of the webcam during the conference.

Connection interface

Typically, a USB interface is used to connect a webcam to a PC. There are also: Wi-Fi cameras and IP web cameras. connect to network equIPment, since, having on board a built-in network card. The higher the USB version, the faster the data transfer rate. Therefore, if you have a good speed of the Internet channel, you can arrange high-definition conferences at a high frequency, which will provide the best picture quality.

Main features of the webcam

You can evaluate the quality of a webcam by its parameters: matrix type, resolution, focusing, viewing angle, frame rate, optical zoom, connection interface and cable length.

Frame frequency

A parameter that determines the quality of the broadcast, the range of which is 9. 90 Hz. A webcam with a low frame rate, capable of transmitting, at best, a blurry image, at worst, transforms communication into a voiced slideshow. Too high a frame rate can lead to no picture at all, if the Internet channel is not fast enough to support broadcasts at that frequency. The most rational choice, in this situation, would be a webcam with an average frame rate of about 40. 70 Hz.

How to change camera and microphone permissions in Google Chrome

Home / Internet / How to Change Camera and Microphone Permissions in Google Chrome

In the Google Chrome web browser, you can easily configure access to the camera and microphone for Individual Internet resources. If you have lost the transmission of data from your webcam or the microphone does NOT respond to sound, in most cases you will need to change the permissions provided by the browser for a particular website.

As you can see, in order to ensure security, Chrome always asks the user for permission to access sites on PC devices that transmit. or audio signals. This happens using a toast notification in the left corner, near the address bar of the browser (Omnibox).

Today we are going to show you ways to manage such permissions. They will be useful in situations where you have prohibited or allowed access to the camera and microphone, and you need to change it for any specific Internet resources.

Understanding how and in what way to change the settings related to the granting of rights is important in the event that you need to change your mind about which site is allowed to use your computer hardware. There are 2 methods to control access rights: from the Omnibox address bar or in the Chrome options.

ACCESS TO THE CAMERA AND MIC

The first method works when you have already set a ban or granted permission to sites, and you want to make some changes while visiting them. Go to the required web resource and Click on the lock icon on the left side of the Omnibox window. In the window that appears, select one of the three provided options, separately for the webcam and microphone:

  • Ask (default)
  • Allow;
  • Block.

Then click on the cross in the upper right corner of the window to save the changes. Then reload the page using the button that appears on a separate panel for the changes to take effect.

Additionally, an informative icon will appear on the right side of the browser address bar. Clicking on it will open a window for quick control of the microphone and camera. Next, you need to reload the web page to save the changes.

The second method is to edit SEPARATE parameters of the browser itself. Go to their management page by directly entering the address into the address bar:

Or via the corresponding menu button located at the top left of Chrome.

Scroll down the page, click on the “Advanced” link and go to the “Content Settings” section. For the webcam and microphone, configure the rights you want. Here you cannot manually add any site to the allowed list, but you will see a list of those already added. They can be removed, if necessary, using the trash can icon.

In order not to give a chance to use your audio broadcasting devices and all, without exception, web resources, set the switch for them to the “blocked” position. This method acts as a small loophole to quickly disable camera and microphone access for everyone.

If necessary, you can always return all settings to the default state. Thank you for attention!
