It’s pretty much the same in Windows 7. The “Play to” item. I show it on the example of displaying a photo on TV.

After that, a small player window should open, where we can control the playback of the file on the TV.

You can add other files to the playlist (by dragging and dropping them there). delete them, pause, rewind, adjust the sound, etc. That is, we can control the entire process of playing a movie on TV from a computer.

The TV will automatically start playing videos, photos, or music.

Click on the “Enable Media Streaming” button.

Then make sure that there is a check mark next to “Allowed” in front of your TV (although, as far as I understand, this is not necessary) and click Ok.

The photo will immediately appear on the TV screen, and in the player on the computer.

And if you watch a movie through “Movies and TV” in Windows 10, then you can play it on TV directly from there.

Open the menu, click on “Transfer to device” and select your TV.

As you can see, nothing complicated. Sometimes the player itself freezes with a list of files in the queue. Usually, you just need to wait a little.

If the method that I described above does not work for you, then you can try to configure the DLAN in another way. Here are some instructions:

How to output video (movie) from computer to TV via Wi-Fi

In this article, I will show you an easy way by which you can display a movie, or other video, photo, music from your computer or laptop to the TV. In this case, we will output the video to the TV via Wi-Fi. That is, without wires. Which is very convenient, since the computer and the TV can be located in different rooms, and we do not need to lay a cable or come up with some complicated connection schemes. With this solution, you can send any media content to the TV screen. We will do everything using the standard Windows tool. No third party software. I tested on Windows 10 and Windows 7.

First, I’ll tell you in a nutshell how it works. Everything is built on DLNA technology, which I have already talked about many times in various articles on this site. Modern TVs with Smart TVs and Windows have DLNA support. This is already enough for us to be able to play video, music, or watch a photo (which is on the computer) on the TV screen. In this case, the model and manufacturer of the TV does not play a special role. I tested on Philips with Android TV and LG. On TVs Sony, Samsung, Panasonic, etc., it still works. The main thing is the presence of Smart TV and connection to the router.

cast, computer, screen

The only condition is that Smart TV TV and laptop (or stationary computer) must be connected to the same router. That is, to one Wi-Fi network. Both devices do not need to be connected via Wi-Fi. It is also possible through a network cable. The main thing is through one router.

How To Cast Computer to TV. How To Cast Your PC To Your TV. Screen Mirror PC Windows 10 to TV

I use this feature a lot myself. Most often for watching movies on TV that I downloaded to my computer. In order not to copy the movie to a USB flash drive and watch it from the USB flash drive on the TV, I just output the movie directly from the computer. I also often display photos on the TV screen when I need to watch them in a large company. It is very convenient and fast. I have two Smart TVs connected to my router and I can send any video, photo, or song to one of the TVs in a few clicks. From any PC or laptop on my home network.

This feature works great on Windows 10. Before writing this article, I decided to test it on a computer with Windows 7. Everything works there as well. There are practically no differences compared to Windows 10.

If the computer does not see the TV or video does not play

The scheme seems to be simple, the function itself is built into Windows, but problems and various errors are not uncommon. Since everyone has different devices, the solutions may differ. Let’s try to find out the main reasons for some of the problems.

  • The computer does not see the TV in the playlist. When we click on “Transfer to Device” the TV just isn’t listed. First, just wait a little (the menu should be open). Make sure your TV has a Smart TV function and is connected to the same router as your computer. In my case, I didn’t have to adjust anything on the TV. It just needs to be turned on and connected to the router.
  • A certain video file does not play on the TV. Error “Format not supported” or “File not readable or not found”. Yes, it happens. I’ve come across it myself. What this is connected with is not clear. The TV may not really support the video file format you are trying to play on it. Or maybe there is some problem on the computer. I just tried to transfer a movie from under Windows 10 to the TV and an error appeared on the TV that the file was not readable, and on the computer “An unexpected device error”. Although other files were played. And in Windows 7, we managed to play this movie on the same TV.
  • The movie stops playing or freezes. My playback also stops sometimes, but only when I open a heavy 4k video. This is most likely due to insufficient connection speed (weak router). Regular HD and Full HD videos should play without lag. For 4k video, it is better to use USB drives or external hard drives. Or connect to the router via a Wi-Fi network in the 5 GHz range.

Display Screen on Apple TV

The Apple TV set-top box lets you stream video from your computer to your TV screen. The easiest way is to connect a laptop with Mac OS X, but you can also set up transfer on a PC with Windows.

How to connect your MacBook: Connect your Apple TV to your TV and your set-top box to your Wi-Fi network. In the system settings of your PC or laptop, select “Displays”. Put Apple TV in the list. an image from a laptop should appear on the TV screen.

If you want to transfer one movie, start it, click on the arrow icon in the menu and click on “AirPlay”. Video will go to TV.

For Windows PC, install iTunes. In the “File” menu, activate the item “Home Sharing”, the AirPlay icon will appear. All films and audio files can be transferred to TV.

We connect and configure

In order to set up the connection, you will need to stretch the cable from the laptop to the TV, before disconnecting both devices.

After switching on, you should see the image from the laptop on the TV. To switch between displays, use one of the function keys, it shows two monitors, usually F4 or F5.

To set up your TV, open the list of signal sources and instead of TV, select the name of the port to which you connected the cable. If there is no picture or it is distorted in some way, you need to go to more detailed settings.

First, set the correct resolution and sharing mode for each monitor:

  • Duplication. the same image will be played on two screens, this mode is suitable for computer games. Be aware that distortions may occur if the extensions are very different;
  • Display only to one. the second screen is disabled;
  • Screen expansion. the TV will be the second monitor, in this mode the desktop will expand to the left or right (this location depends on the settings of displays 1 and 2, they can be swapped).

You can transfer different programs or applications to the second display by dragging and dropping them off the edge of the table (for example, turn on a movie on the TV without stopping working on a laptop).

You can open this menu using the Win P key combinations. In this menu you will be offered several options for using the second screen, namely, duplication or expansion.

Screen output via adapter

If your TV does not have Wi-Fi, but does have an HDMI connector, you will need an adapter such as:

  • Android Mini PC;
  • Google Chromecast;
  • Miracast set-top box.

These devices will empower your TV with Smart TV capabilities. Also, some TV models allow you to connect a Wi-Fi adapter to their USB port, after which they can go to your home network.

Connection WITHOUT wires

If you have purchased a modern TV with WI-FI, it is possible to connect a laptop to it wirelessly. Also, for owners of TV without Smart TV technology, you can set up a wireless connection using a special adapter. There are several methods for establishing a connection:

  • DLNA. if the TV is connected to the router via a local network or has Wi-Fi Direct;
  • Miracast, or WiD. all this will help to use the TV as a wireless monitor, playing video or transmitting images;
  • Through an adapter;
  • Apple TV.

Connecting laptop screen to TV via USB

You will not be able to transfer video or images via USB ports, they are not designed for this type of signal. But you can use such a connector with an adapter to HDMI.

How to connect a laptop screen to a TV via USB: in addition to a USB cable, you will need an adapter and a small external video card that will broadcast the picture from the desktop.

When buying, you should pay attention to the fact that the video card supports FullHD and audio characteristics. After connecting the device, install the drivers on your computer or laptop and select the USB signal source on the TV.

You should find these ports on both your TV and laptop. They don’t have to be the same. If the connectors are different, adapters will help you.

Connect laptop screen to TV via DLNA

To connect a laptop to a TV via DLNA via WI-FI, you need to connect both devices to the same router. There is a “Network” item in the TV menu.

Set your access point as the main one, write down its password. Next, you need to create a server on a PC or laptop, opening access for TV.

In the “Network Sharing Center” set your home network as active. Select the files or folder with files that you want to play on the TV screen. Right-click on the folder, open “Properties” and click on the “Access” tab, in the advanced settings, set the opening of access to the content.

An easier way to create servers is to use special programs: Home Media Server, Share Manager, Samsung Share. “Home media server” is the most common and simple, this program can transcode video and audio files, and also supports digital TV.

Now you need to turn on the TV. In the menu, find a service for viewing content from third-party devices. For LG devices, it is located in the SmartShare section, on Sony. Home. To transfer a movie from the computer to the TV via Wi-Fi, click on the desired file on the laptop, in the submenu go to “Play to”.

In Windows 7 and 8, there may be problems with the transfer of video in MKV format, for them the playback function on another display is not activated. To display the picture in this case, you first need to convert the files to AVI.

If your TV has a Wi-Fi Direct function, you just need to enable access to the necessary folders on your laptop. After that, activate Direct in the TV menu. select your laptop in the list of detected devices, enter the password and you can transfer files.

We connect the laptop screen to a TV with Miracast and WiDi

For these technologies, you do not have to open access to folders, but the characteristics of a laptop must meet a number of requirements in order to display a picture via Wi-Fi:

  • At least Intel 3 processor;
  • Windows 8.1 and above with Wi-Fi. for Miracast;
  • Intel HD Graphics Wireless Adapter. for widi;
  • The TV must support one of these technologies.

How to display a laptop image to a TV via WiDi: Download and open the Intel Wireless Display program, run a search for a wireless display. To connect, enter the security code, it will be shown on the TV.

To connect via Miracast in Windows 8.1, open the Charms bar and activate “Projector” in the list of devices. Choose to add a wireless screen.

Cable connection

There are several connectors through which the PC and TV are connected. DVI and HDMI cables carry a high quality signal, while using VGA format only allows you to get an analog image.

The subsequent choice of the cable depends on what sockets are on the equipment. it is important that they coincide or you could put an adapter on one of its ends.

If your computer does not have a built-in HDMI card, or if you are going to connect it to your TV using a different cable format, you need to purchase an audio wire, otherwise you will only get an image. It is connected via an audio jack. a green round hole with a diameter of 3.5 mm. and connects the input on the PC soundbar to the connector on the TV or external speakers. Without such a cable, you will have to listen to the sound through computer speakers.

S-Video cable connection

Connecting a TV to a PC using this type of cable is currently not often used, due to its irrelevance, as well as the availability of more modern and efficient options. This analog output is found on old-style video cards and on video cards intended for video editing. Such a connection is capable of reproducing an image of not the best quality, but in some cases this is the only available method.

The connection process is almost identical to those described earlier in this article. First of all, disconnect the TV and PC from the network, and then connect the necessary connectors. Then turn on both devices and select the corresponding video input on the TV if it was not automatically detected. Upon completion of these manipulations, the picture should be broadcast on the screen.

RCA and Scart

Some cable options, in particular RCA and Scart, can only be used in conjunction with special converters. This is due to the fact that there are simply no such outputs on the PC.

Most older TVs are often only capable of receiving RCA signals. This cable consists of three colored wires: two for audio, one for video. People also call them “tulips”. But in order to make such a connection, you must additionally purchase a special adapter. It can be HDMI → RCA or VGA → RCA.

cast, computer, screen

The relatively modern Scart connector allows high-definition image transmission. What’s more, it can play both video and audio format at the same time. Unfortunately, there is no such connector on a computer. Therefore, again, you will have to resort to buying adapters.

Connection setup proceeds according to the same principle as similar methods.

VGA connection

This connection format will allow you to see an analog image without sound, which will not be too high resolution, respectively, of imperfect quality. However, if there are no other types of connectors, use this method to connect the equipment.

To do this, follow these steps:

  • Turn off the computer, connect the equipment with each other using audio and video cables.
  • Turn on the TV and select the connection item in the settings (the section may have the name Source or Input), stop at the VGA item.
  • Turn on the computer. the desktop image should appear on the TV screen. Another monitor should appear on the computer in the desktop settings.

HDMI connection

This method of supplying video and audio signals to TV is the most relevant and profitable today, because you will receive a high quality digital signal with sound. provided that your computer has a built-in HDMI card. Modern video cards and laptops are usually equipped with such a connector.

cast, computer, screen

Using this connection, you can display a picture on a screen with a large diagonal without loss of quality, which will especially appeal to fans of cinema, various games.

When buying an HDMI cable, take into account the location of the equipment in the room. if the screen is located on the wall, you will not be able to simply insert a straight plug, since the cable is quite thick and stiff. There are various types of cables, where the plug is turned 90 degrees or made in the form of a corner. it fits well between the back of the TV and the wall.

  • Turn off the equipment from the network, connect it with a cable via HDMI connectors.
    cast, computer, screen
  • Turn on the TV, in the connection parameters (Source or Input) select the required connection type.

It happens that one HDMI port on the TV is not enough, and to solve the problem there are switches. “hubs” that allow you to connect several devices to it at the same time.

Image Adjustment

After connecting the equipment using one of the above methods, you need to adjust the image. Do the following:

  • In the context menu of the desktop (it is enabled by right-clicking) open the item “Screen resolution”.
    cast, computer, screen
  • In the Screen section, the line “Multiple monitors” is selected if you connected a TV and did not disconnect the computer screen.
    cast, computer, screen

When setting the resolution, stop at the highest value for the greatest clarity of the picture, but keep in mind that the higher the value, the smaller the icons.

Sound setting

As you can see, not every cable, together with the image, transmits an audio signal. For this purpose, one more is needed. with a Minijack connector at one end and with two audio-tulips (RCA) at the other.

The Minijack plugs into the PC headphone jack (green). Usually there is a designation on the case. And “tulips” (red and white) are connected to the corresponding ports on the TV.

cast, computer, screen

It is also necessary to make a small adjustment in the computer parameters. This is done very simply. Right-click on the sound icon located in the notification area and select “Playback Devices”. Next, in the list provided, find the name of your TV, right-click on it, and then click on “Set as default”. Save the changes with the “Ok” button.
