OBSERVATION ARCHIVE
A surveillance system archive is a certain amount of information (recordings from surveillance cameras) stored on some medium.
Most often, a hard disk (HDD) of the required capacity (volume) acts as such. Let’s take a look at the main questions about archiving records from a practical point of view.
Conventionally, surveillance systems can be divided into the following groups:
- Amateur;
- Semi-professional;
- Professional.
Accordingly, the requirements for the method of creating the archive and the storage time of records will be different.
The first group includes surveillance installed in the country, in a private house or apartment. As a rule, such systems have a very small number of cameras, the recording is carried out on the hard disk of the recorder.
As a rule, there are two factors that determine these terms:
- The time during which it may be necessary to obtain information for certain purposes;
- The budget allocated for equIPping the facility with a surveillance system.
Despite the obviousness of the first point, there are some nuances here. The fact is that modern recording systems allow you to create backup copies of the necessary fragments. Reservation is often done on a flash drive (USB drive), although other options are possible. it depends on the model and capabilities of the same recorder.
After that, a copy of the necessary files is created and stored for any necessary time, for example, for the duration of legal proceedings.
HOW MANY MONITORING CAMERAS are stored
We have more or less sorted out organizational issues related to the storage time of recordings from cameras. Now you can move on to the technical side of the issue. As stated, the primary storage device for simple surveillance systems is the hard disk drive (HDD). Its capacity determines the storage time of the archive.
The fact is that no one will calculate the exact value for you. Indeed, in addition to factors such as:
- Surveillance camera resolution;
- Compression speed;
- The type of codec used, etc.,
There are moments that are difficult to determine, for example, the intensity of movement of people in the field of view. In addition, it can be different for different cameras of the surveillance system.
In this case, it is worth determining the required storage time for each camera, calculating the required amount of memory for the recording time of a specific zone, and adding the results obtained.
However, as personal experience shows, in most cases, for surveillance systems that I classified as amateur at the beginning of the article, 1 TB of memory is quite enough. Nevertheless, it is still worthwhile to roughly estimate the HDD capacity.
It is worth noting that the calculation of the archive depth has no fundamental differences for analog systems and IP surveillance. Of course, there are subtleties here, but “household” level they are NOT fundamental.
Hard disk FOR SURVEILLANCE
As already mentioned, the overwhelming majority of surveillance systems use a hard disk to record information. Besides a certain amount of memory, the HDD must have high reliability. At the same time, it is not at all necessary to buy a specialized hard drive for surveillance, especially since this is more a marketing ploy than a reality.
The characteristics of the hard disk always indicate such parameters as:
- Rotational speed;
- Built-in memory;
- Interface type.
The first two do NOT have a particular impact on the choice of HDD for surveillance systems. Unless, if it speaks about the spindle rotation speed, then a large number of revolutions can indirectly affect the durability of the disk in the recorder.
The fact is that the higher this indicator, the higher the operating temperature of the device. For a system with a large number of cameras and high recording rates, this can be critical. A speed of 5400 or 7200 rps is quite enough for our purposes.
As for the interface, most of the registrars use SATA, moreover, they are the most common. But nevertheless, when buying a disc at this point, pay attention.
I would like to remind you once again that formatting a hard disk erases the entire archive, although the registrar usually warns about this. But he does not say that there are two modes of working with HDD, but you need to know this:
- recording stops when the hard disk is full; or, if the disk is full, overwriting is performed. new ones are written in place of the oldest files.
Another thing to remember:
- Any registrar has limitations on the volume of the supported disk;
- There are recorders with the ability to connect two HDDs.
All of the above will allow you to choose the right set of equIPment and ensure the required storage period of records. But keep in mind, when using the options discussed, a hard drive failure deprives you of all previously recorded information.
If high reliability of information storage is required, then you should use IP systems with information storage on the monitoring server, and use RAID arrays to create and store record archives. Expensive, of course, but a professional system is NOT cheap.

How many days camera recording is kept?
1. To calculate, we need to know the size of the hard disk or memory card to which the recording is made. Available hard drives: 1TB, 2TB, 3TB, 4TB, 6TB, 8TB, 10TB, 12TB.
2. The size of the recording file from 1 camera / day.
The archive size will depend on:
– surveillance camera resolution (number of megapixels).
– number of frames / second. Usually it is 24 fps. For fixing the protected area, warehouses or in the office, 16 fps or even less will be enough. For dynamic scenes. For example, when reading numbers from passing cars, there are cameras capable of shooting at a speed of 60 fps. By reducing the number of frames, we are increasing the size of the archive.
– from the level of motion in the frame. The coding aLGorithm compares the last few frames, if there are changes, they are recorded. If the picture is static, and there is little movement, then the size of this will be much smaller than from an object filming a busy intersection.
– from the compression codec: h264. The most common and used codec; since 2017, more and more equIPment capable of Compressing in h265 began to appear. Yakiy allows you to better compress files by about 10-20%, while increasing the storage time of the recording for surveillance systems. For the h265 codec to receive the same distribution, at least a couple of years must pass. If you nevertheless decide to purchase such equIPment, you must take into account that, in addition to cameras, the recorder has support for the H.265 standard. And in the settings, check which codec is the default. Read more about the comparison of codecs read our material.
The table below shows the average values of the archive size from one surveillance camera per day, with different resolution, using the h.264 codec, with an average level of motion in the frame.
Mp | Volume, GB / day |
1 | 16.5 |
1.3 | 21.45 |
2 | 33 |
4 | 66 |
five | 82.5 |
8 | 132 |
12 | 198 |
3. The number of cameras in the system. As their number increases, the archive size increases in proportion to the number of cameras. Consequently, the storage time of the record is reduced by a factor of n. That is, with 4 cameras, the recording archive was stored, say, 30 days, if you added 4 more cameras to the same recorder, the recording archive will be halved (up to 15 days).
Let’s count.
Hard disk capacity / (File size from one camera per day Number of cameras) = How many days will be kept recording from surveillance cameras.
Example:
We have 1 HDD. 1TB (Terabyte) hard drive. it
1000 GB. We translate everything into Gigabytes so that the calculation is in the same number system.
Camera 2 MP (FULL-HD 1920×1080). Recording archive per day Occupies 33 GB (see table above).
Number of surveillance cameras in the system 4 pcs.
1000 / (334) = 7.6 days of continuous recording, our archive will be about seven and a half days (maybe a little more if there are not many movements in the frame)
For the convenience of calculations, we suggest using our calculator: https://rucam-video.ru/raschet-emkosti-zhestkogo-diska.html
If the recording will go NOT around the clock, but by the motion detector, then the number of days received can be multIPlied by two (approximately). 7.62 =

How long observation record is kept
The task of any camera is to monitor the protected area. The footage often has to be revised in order to make sure of various controversial points. Therefore, it is not difficult to assume that materials are NOT deleted immediately after the data is transferred to the tracking computer. Let’s take a closer look at how much recording from surveillance cameras is stored.
OBSERVATION ARCHIVE
Outdated data Should be deleted with a certain consistency in order to make room for the new piece of information generated by the security system. This begs the question: how to determine the archiving depth for this particular surveillance system? It is impossible to answer this question unequivocally and simply: in each individual case, everything depends on a set of conditions.
Records from surveillance cameras must be kept for a certain time, because the archive is often used to clarify controversial situations. In the article, we will figure out what factors the storage duration depends on. In some cities, there is a common surveillance network that connects cameras in courtyards and entrances to apartment buildings, crowded places and at intersections. The unified information system ensures the safety of people, helps to identify the identity of offenders and provides evidence in the event of administrative violations or criminal offenses. Records from places of mass gathering of citizens are stored for 5 days, from educational organizations. for 30 days.
Where and how records will be stored?
A friend of mine a couple of days ago got into a not very pleasant situation I will not describe, so as NOT to inflate the topic. At first he decided to score and NOT to do anything, because now he had a desire to restore justice. Were located in the immediate vicinity of the incident site. Therefore, no one and fuss will no longer be because of some assholes of truth-fighters, offended for a couple of slaps in the face in response to rudeness.
From all surveillance systems, first of all, reliability, stability of work, as well as sufficient time for keeping records are required. If the recorded clIPs are stored too shortly, they will not be able to Access them when you need them. Therefore, the recorder should keep the captured as long as possible. The storage time of records depends on many points, this will be discussed in more detail below.

How many records are stored in the uncotrol system
In this system, everything depends on the type of shooting (round the clock, on a schedule, and so on), here are the number of cameras connected to one source and other aspects. In fact, these are really important points, since the maximum shelf life of surveillance cameras is directly related to all this.
The more memory is spent on storing materials, the less space in the archive. And this already affects the term. For a certain amount of time, specialists must arrange the material into folders, have time to check the records for any violations of the law, and so on.
Hard disk space also plays a huge role in this case. Using Full HDd or simple cameras requires free space to save recordings. Usually use from 2 to 5 TB of memory in order to Archive all materials accumulated from various sources (cameras). Calculating the amount of memory for storing surveillance cameras, as we found out, is also very important.
How long are the recordings of surveillance cameras stored in the uncontrol system? Approximately 2 weeks to a month. This amount of time is quite enough to check files and empty them, of course.
City surveillance systems
Urban surveillance contains more cameras per recorder. That is why areas of all cities are divided into several parts for convenience in subsequent work with the archive. Some of these units also include access surveillance cameras, but their storage times differ slightly from city street recordings.
How many surveillance cameras are stored in the entrance? Since one entrance already includes hundreds of people from the floor, it is necessary to archive and review records faster in order to free up the memory of devices.
Since we have touched upon the speed of work of specialists in this case, it is worth figuring out how much time surveillance cameras record. How much power the surveillance cameras need is impossible to say for sure. There are cameras that record what is happening for more than 4 days in a row, so a constant connection to a power source is most desirable.
Let’s continue In general, urban systems at the entrance require 1-2 weeks of archive, but for cameras located on central and other streets, it may take a couple of months. But the archive in this case is sometimes released gradually, so some records can be deleted after 2 weeks, and some only after 1.5 months.
Retention times for surveillance records on different types of devices
There are many reasons why some records have to be kept. The first, of course, is related to the requirements of the current legislation on the territory of the Russian Federation. The second has to do with industry requirements. Here we mean individual entrepreneurshIP (and not only), which for personal reasons need these records.
The third case occurs less frequently, but it is still worth noting. It happens that cameras capture something strange, tangential both, for example, to your object, and by a passing person. The investigation, which is being conducted to resolve the problems of automotive products, may invite you for an indefinite period of materials.
The number of days for which your records are seized should be obtained from the police themselves.
How many records are kept in a safe city
Some cities, for the safety of people’s lives, have a unified tracking system. This means that all available cameras in the entrance, in parking lots, and so on, are connected to one place. This is necessary in order to track various situations taking place in the city, as well as point out the attacker, providing the investigation with materials that threaten the life of a person, for example.
Unfortunately, there is no single answer to the question of how long the recordings from surveillance cameras are kept. If we take the capital of our country, Moscow, as an example, then we can assume that the period varies from 1 month to 1.5. Various factors affect the retention period for surveillance footage, so the number of days varies.

Each entry has its own shelf life, after which it is deleted from the archive of a certain place. Let’s take a closer look at how much recording from surveillance cameras is stored.
How many recordings from surveillance cameras are stored in private organizations
Private organizations, as you know, have specialized offices with equIPment that broadcasts what is happening. It is constantly reviewed by experienced specialists, so a long storage period from surveillance cameras is NOT required.
It is clear that in any case they are looked through again so as not to miss a single important moment, but you do NOT spend as much time as looking through the records of the entire city, for example. And there are not so many cameras installed in private organizations, so 2-3 employees are enough, who could sit in the office and observe in the mode online.
The archiving period is only affected by the time it takes to view the records twice. Approximately 1-2 two weeks is enough for a complete check of materials.
What to do if you need surveillance footage
Many are interested in how to view the recordings of surveillance cameras, if necessary. In this case, you should contact the organization of the cameras that you need. If you do not know if this is a personal or city camera, try contacting the police.
They must PROVIDE you with the address of the person or organization that is viewing the archive of this particular camera. However, no one will simply allow you to check the materials. For this, it is necessary to explain the reason for this check. If this is connected with someone’s offense, we recommend that you contact the specialists already with statements from the police.
Before you decide to go to check the recordings, find out how many surveillance camera recordings are stored in a given location. If you are late with the deadlines, then, unfortunately, you will not be able to resolve your issue. Therefore, we must not forget to contact such organizations in time. It can play against you.

Need for observation
Of course, observation plays an important role in any enterprise in resolving various disputes, provides protection against intruders and allows you to analyze errors in working with consumers. But, what if no incidents occur, is it worth keeping the old archives?
At the same time, today many executives underestimate the importance of the old archives in the field of various audits, re-investigations, as well as checks designed to obtain princIPled permissions. This is also due to the significant costs that are required for storing information, because despite the rapidly developing production of containers for storing recordings from surveillance cameras, archiving still requires a lot of resources. In this case, it is advisable to correctly set the archiving period for a specific surveillance system, which will allow you to always have at hand the necessary information and significantly save savings on the purchase of storage media.

These records will be of great value in the investigation of an industrial accident, in determining the causes of the accident.
How long are recordings from surveillance cameras kept
How many recordings from surveillance cameras are stored
Due to the wide possibilities and comparative cheapness, the surveillance cameras have become the same integral part of the seller’s workplace as the counter and cash register. At the same time, the installation of a surveillance system is difficult, not only technically, but also in terms of proper legal registration. In this article we will consider some aspects of this GoPro process from the point of view of labor law and consumer protection.
Violation of labor duties by an employee
Upon detection of a discIPlinary offense committed by an employee, the employer may, observing the requirements for the procedure for imposing a discIPlinary sanction, established by Art. 193 of the Labor Code of the Russian Federation, to bring an employee to discIPlinary responsibility, up to and including dismissal if there is a reason. Of course, it is the employer’s right, not the duty, to punish an employee. However, most often the installation of cameras pursues not only the good goals of ensuring the safety of workers and the safety of their property, but also the detection of violations of labor discIPline. Therefore, in most cases, the employer, on the contrary, uses the survey data to punish the employee. Which, of course, the employees don’t like very much. In some cases, they try to challenge the employer’s actions on the basis of the lack of evidence of the violation itself. Say, the records do not prove the fact of absenteeism (other violation) or is falsification. Meanwhile, in accordance with Art. 55 of the Code of Civil Procedure of the Russian Federation, an entry is recognized as evidence in a civil dispute if it is received in the manner prescribed by law. Therefore, if the employer observes all the conditions for ensuring the legality of observation, as well as compliance with the procedure for imposing a penalty, the likelihood of a successful DISPUTE by an employee of the discIPlinary action applied to him will be close to zero.

It can be theft, appropriation of entrusted property. over, recorded illegal actions can be committed by both the employee and the client. Further actions of the entrepreneur will depend on this: an inspection, a strict conversation and subsequent dismissal, or all of the above, can be carried out in relation to the employee, but with the transfer of the corresponding statement and filming materials to the Law Enforcement Agencies.
In relation to the client, the situation can also be resolved either peacefully (let go, and not demanding the institution of a criminal case for attempted theft), or with the involvement of law enforcement agencies for proceedings in order to initiate a criminal case against such a criminal client, and then. to punish him to the fullest extent of the law. But this will no longer be in the competence of the entrepreneur. It should be noted that by virtue of Art. 81 of the Code of Criminal Procedure of the Russian Federation, a record can be material evidence in a criminal case, if such evidence is obtained in compliance with the requirements of the law.
The processing of personal data of visitors is legal?
The issue of the legality of surveillance on the trading floor is controversial. For example, in the specialized press there is such an opinion that from a formal point of view, if the camera is installed in the sales area, it is necessary to obtain the written consent of each visitor. The logic in this case is as follows. Since the image of a citizen contains information relating directly or indirectly to a specific or identifiable individual (clause 1 of article 3 of the Federal Law of July 27, 2006 No. 152-FZ About personal data, hereinafter referred to as the Law on Personal Data), and filming is an action (operation) or a set of actions (operations) performed with the introduction of automation tools with personal data, including collection, recording, systematization, accumulation, storage (clause 3, Article 3 of the Law on personal data), which means that this action falls under the regulation of Part 4 of Art. 9 of the Law on Personal Data, which does not contain any exceptions.
In our opinion, this position is not entirely correct. Part 4 of Art. 9 of this law contains a very clear clause that the processing of personal data requires written consent only in cases provided for by federal law.
Fragment of the document MinimizeShow Part 1 of Art. 9 of the Federal Law of 27.07.2006 No. 152-FZ About personal data
1. The subject of personal data decides to provide his personal data and agrees to their processing freely, of his own free will and in his interest. Consent to the processing of personal data must be specific, informed and conscientious. Consent to the processing of personal data can be given by the subject of personal data or his representative in any form that allows to confirm the fact of its receIPt, unless otherwise established by federal law.
Therefore, it is rational for an entrepreneur to post a relevant message directly at the entrance to the trading floor. It should be noted that the placement of cameras outside the premises controlled by the entrepreneur raises serious complaints from the point of view of the law in personal data. At the same time, we must state that the cameras installed, for example, by the traffic police, should cause the same complaints if persons, and not those particIPating in road traffic, come into their field of vision.
In general, such a casuistic approach to the problem. the opposition of some legal norms to the second. seems to us initially flawed. It is caused primarily by the too generalized wording of the law in personal data. In the current situation, it would be more correct to talk about the ever decreasing privacy of each individual and objectivity is a GoProcess in modern society, caused both by the safety requirements of each of us, and by the general configuration of the surrounding world, its digitization and departure into the world electronic networks. These events require a serious revision not only of legislation, but also of the very approach to the boundaries of natural rights to private and personal life. In the case of observation in the trading floor, there is a contrast between a number of real goals (economic, security, improving the quality of service), some vaguely formulated value of a particular person. over, We must understand that the visitors themselves refuse this value everywhere and without much difficulty for themselves. This is indicated at least by the fact that the presence or absence of a camera in the sales area does NOT serve as a basis for choosing to visit it. The main thing in this case is to maintain a certain balance of interests, do not go beyond the boundaries of what is reasonable and generally accepted in our society.
Can peep?
In our opinion, there should not be such a GoPro counterpart. These concepts are in different semantic planes. Personal life. everything that concerns, firstly, the internal psychological component of a person’s life as a person, that is, his thoughts, feelings, beliefs, and secondly, these are the external manifestations of his personality in relations with other people (friendshIPs, intimate relations). Private life is an even more general concept, it is customary to understand it as a person’s entire life, and not related to his public and political activities.
Each of us, at any moment of our existence, has inner freedom, which is the basis of private life. Reason and freedom are inseparable from each other, they determine the nature of the choice of behavior and actions, and in this sense, a person cannot leave private life, do not leave his mind. over, following this logic, we can come to a simple idea: work itself is one of the forms of manifestation of a person’s private life, it is a person’s free choice (Article 2 of the Labor Code of the Russian Federation) and is a series of certain actions that become a manifestation of his will in the framework of the labor function. In addition, work, with rare exceptions, and cannot be imagined without personal contacts, both with colleagues and with employees of other organizations or with customers.
At the same time, control over the performance of the labor function is the employer’s right, inherently granted to him by the entire logic of labor legislation. In fact, the employment contract itself, by its very nature, is impossible without the consent of the employee to establish limited control over his private life within working hours. Guided by this logic and generally accepted morality, we can talk about the possibility of control by the employer only where the employee’s activity is the fulfillment of his job duties. For example, in the sales area. However, in our opinion, despite the fact that the rest rooms or changing rooms are located on the territory of the employer, here the observation of employees will already be an unjustified interference with privacy.
In this case, it is more reasonable to exercise control at the entrance and exit to the trading area. Thus, on the one hand, the entrepreneur understands how much time his employees devote to the performance of their direct labor duties, and on the other hand, refrains from unnecessary interference.
For dynamic scenes. for example, reading the license plate from passing cars, there are cameras capable of shooting at a speed of 60 fps. By reducing the number of frames, we are increasing the size of the archive.
– here is the level of motion in the frame. The coding aLGorithm compares the last few frames, if there are changes, they are recorded. If the picture is static, and there is little movement, then the size of this will be much smaller than from an object filming a busy intersection.
– here is the compression codec: h264. the most common and used codec; Since 2017, more and more equIPment has begun to appear capable of Compressing in h265. which allows better Compressing files by about 10-20%, thereby increasing the recording storage time for surveillance systems.
1 TB hard disk (Terabyte). this is
1000 GB. we convert everything into Gigabytes, so that the calculation is in the same number system.
Camera 2 MP (FULL-HD 1920 × 1080). recording archive per day Takes 33 GB (see the table above).
