Despite all the difficulties, Honor continues to saturate the market with more and more new products. By the end of autumn, Honor 10X Lite arrived on the Russian market. It will be the Russians who will see it first in the world, and only then all the others. And we, in turn, tried to be one of the first to acquaint readers in the most detailed way with all the possibilities of this novelty.
Appearance and usability
The design of the Honor 10X Lite is ordinary, one might even say a little boring, at least in black. The smartphone is large, feels thick (although in fact its 9.3 mm thickness is more than the average 8-9 mm now, but not much), glossy, rather heavy. On the other hand, the good news is that, finally, the boom of bright gradient overflows and too variegated colors has passed. Here, everything is played out subtly. Now the smartphone looks solid, and even more expensive than it actually is.
The glossy coating of the backrest is, of course, soiled and slippery. However, in the hands the body of the smartphone does not slip thanks to the rough side frame. The frame, by the way, is also plastic, there are no jumpers on it.
The cameras protrude slightly beyond the surface, but the smartphone is more or less stable on the table, it can be used.
On the front panel, there is one camera module for self-shooting. It is cut into a round hole in the screen matrix, and such a solution has already been found in Honor models, but the 10X Lite is the first device where such a hole is located in the middle of the upper part of the screen, and not in its corner. In addition to taking self-portraits, the front camera is used for face unlocking. No alert LED.
The power key does not stick out, but on the contrary, is slightly recessed. It has a built-in fingerprint scanner that works quickly and clearly. Volume key is thin and stiff.

The screen of the Honor 10X Lite is noticeably darker (brightness in the photos is 99 versus 110 for the Nexus 7). The doubling of reflected objects in the Honor 10X Lite screen is very weak, this indicates that there is no air gap between the layers of the screen (more specifically, between the outer glass and the surface of the LCD matrix) (OGS type screen. One Glass Solution). Due to the smaller number of boundaries (such as glass / air) with greatly different refractive indices, such screens look better in conditions of intense ambient light, but their repair in the case of cracked outer glass is much more expensive, since the entire screen has to be changed. On the outer surface of the screen there is a special oleophobic (grease-repellent) coating, which is slightly better in efficiency than that of the Nexus 7, so fingerprints are much easier to remove, and appear at a slower speed than in the case of ordinary glass.
When the white field was displayed in full screen and with manual brightness control, its maximum value was 420 cd / m². The maximum brightness is quite high, therefore, given the excellent anti-glare properties, the readability of the screen even on a sunny day outdoors should be at an acceptable level. The minimum brightness value is 2 cd / m². In complete darkness, the brightness can be lowered to a comfortable value. In the presence of automatic brightness control by the light sensor (it is located to the right of the front speaker on the upper edge of the front panel). In automatic mode, when the ambient light conditions change, the screen brightness both increases and decreases. The operation of this function depends on the position of the brightness adjustment slider: with it, the user can try to set the desired brightness level in the current conditions. If you do not intervene, then in complete darkness, the auto-brightness function reduces the brightness to 5 cd / m2 (a bit dark), in an office illuminated with artificial light (about 550 lx) sets it to 120 cd / m2 (normal), and conditionally in direct sunlight increases to 420 cd / m² (up to the maximum, just right). The result did not quite suit us, so in complete darkness we slightly increased the brightness, resulting in the following values for the three conditions indicated above: 15, 140 and 420 cd / m² (an ideal combination). It turns out that the automatic brightness control function works adequately and allows the user to customize his work for individual requirements. At any brightness level, there is no significant backlight modulation, so there is no screen flicker either.

The screen has good viewing angles without significant color shift, even with large gaze deviations from the perpendicular to the screen, and without tint inversion. For comparison, here are the photos in which the same images are displayed on the screens of Honor 10X Lite and Nexus 7, while the brightness of the screens was initially set to about 200 cd / m², and the color balance on the camera was forcibly switched to 6500 K.

The colors on the Honor 10X Lite‘s screen are a little oversaturated, and the color balance of the screens varies. Recall that a photograph cannot serve as a reliable source of information about the quality of color rendition and is provided only for a conditional visual illustration. The reason is that the spectral sensitivity of the camera matrix does not exactly match this characteristic of human vision.
Now at an angle of approximately 45 degrees to the plane and to the side of the screen:
It can be seen that the colors did not change much on both screens, but on the Honor 10X Lite the contrast decreased to a greater extent due to the more black highlighting.
The brightness at an angle of the screens decreased (at least 5 times, based on the difference in exposure), but the smartphone’s brightness at this angle is still slightly higher. The black field is strongly lightened when deviated along the diagonal, but remains conditionally neutral gray. The photos below demonstrate this (the brightness of the white areas in the direction perpendicular to the plane of the screens is the same!):
When viewed from a perpendicular view, the uniformity of the black field is good:
The contrast (approximately in the center of the screen) is high. about 1100: 1. Black-white-black response time is 18 ms (9 ms on 9 ms off). The transition between gray tones of 25% and 75% (based on the numerical value of the color) and back in total takes 30 ms. The gamma curve, plotted using 32 points at equal intervals in terms of the numerical value of the shade of gray, showed no blockage in either the highlights or the shadows. The exponent of the approximating power function is 2.07, which is below the standard value of 2.2. In this case, the real gamma curve significantly deviates from the power dependence:
This is due to the fact that this device has a dynamic adjustment of the backlight brightness with an unobvious dependence on time and on the nature of the displayed image. As a result, the obtained dependence of brightness on the hue (gamma curve) may not correspond to the gamma curve of a static image, since the measurements were carried out with sequential output of gray shades almost on the entire screen. For this reason, a number of tests. determining the contrast and response time, comparing the black illumination at angles. we carried out (however, as always) when displaying special templates with a constant average brightness, and not single-color fields across the entire screen. In general, such a non-switchable brightness correction does nothing but harm, since a constant change in screen brightness can at least cause some discomfort.
The spectra of the components are fairly well separated, which leads to a wide color gamut. For a consumer device, a wide color gamut is a disadvantage, since as a result, the colors of images. drawings, photographs and films. oriented to the sRGB space (and there are the vast majority of them) have an unnatural saturation. This is especially noticeable on recognizable shades, such as skin tones. The result is shown in the photos above.
However, not everything is so bad: when you select the Normal profile, the coverage is compressed to the sRGB borders.

The balance of shades on the gray scale after selecting the Normal profile is acceptable, since the color temperature is not much higher than the standard 6500 K (about 7600 K on a white field), and the deviation from Spectra of a black body (ΔE) below 10. 3.6 is also on white what is considered an excellent indicator for a consumer device.
This device has the ability to correct the color balance by adjusting the hue on the color wheel or simply by choosing one of the three preset profiles.
In the graphs below, the Vivid curves correspond to the results without any color balance correction (Vivid profile), and the Normal curves correspond to the results data obtained after selecting the Normal profile and manual correction of color balance (point on the correction circle. as in the picture above). (The darkest areas of the gray scale can be ignored, since the color balance there is not very important, and the error in measuring color characteristics at low brightness is large.)
It can be seen that the change in balance corresponds to the expected result, since ΔE has decreased, and the color temperature has approached the standard 6500 K. There is some benefit from such a correction, although the maximum brightness has noticeably decreased. Note that this function is implemented in a variant rather for show, since there is no numerical reflection of the correction and there is no special field for measuring the color balance.
There is already a traditional setting that allows you to reduce the intensity of the blue component.
Marketers tried to intimidate the user in order to show the degree of concern of the manufacturer. Of course, there is no harmful UV radiation (see spectrum above), and there is no eye strain caused by blue light. In principle, bright light can lead to a violation of the daily (circadian) rhythm, but everything is solved by reducing the brightness to a comfortable level, and there is absolutely no point in distorting the color balance, reducing the contribution of blue.
To summarize: the screen has a fairly high maximum brightness (420 cd / m²) and has excellent anti-glare properties, so the device can be used outdoors even on a sunny summer day. In complete darkness, the brightness can be lowered to a comfortable level (up to 2 cd / m²). It is also acceptable to use the mode with automatic brightness adjustment, which works adequately. Also, the advantages of the screen include an effective oleophobic coating, no air gap in the layers of the screen and no flicker, high contrast (1100: 1), sRGB color gamut and good color balance (when choosing the right profile and after a little correction). The disadvantages are the low stability of black to deviation of the gaze from the perpendicular to the plane of the screen. Taking into account the importance of characteristics for this particular class of devices, the screen quality can be considered good.
Four camera modules are installed at the back. Three of them are removed, the fourth module is a sensor for measuring the depth of the scene. Thus, the smartphone can shoot at wide and ultra-wide angles, and do macro photography, but did not receive a telephoto lens with optical zoom.

The main camera received a 48-megapixel module with an f / 1.8 aperture lens. There is a fast phase detection autofocus, no optical stabilization. By default, it shoots at 12 megapixels with the already familiar function of combining four pixels into one. In the corners, the picture “lathers”, and this is probably due to the lenses used. In the default version (12 megapixels), the picture looks more contrasting, clear, and therefore three-dimensional. If you just need to shoot in automatic mode, and there is no desire to “confuse” shooting in the manual settings mode, then there is no point in switching to “full” resolution (48 megapixels). In automatic shooting mode, a “full-size” photo comes out flatter, whitish and blurry, it requires post-processing.
