How to choose an action camera for an amateur. xiaomi, sony or GoPro?

For such cases, there were inventions of an action camera, a review of which this article will be devoted.

What criteria should an action camera have and how does it differ from a regular camera? The main purpose of this device. to provide high-quality video filming in extreme conditions, when filming with a conventional video camera is impossible. Such a video camera must meet a number of requirements: to have a convenient possibility of fixing high-resolution video recording on a selected surface, to be resistant to external influences (water, falling, etc.), to have sufficient memory and battery capacity for long-term shooting. Action cameras are in great demand by extreme lovers and lovers of an active lifestyle, and then the question of choosing a good action camera never loses its relevance.

But it is worth explaining that you need to make such a purchase taking into account your own needs, and not arrange a pursuit of the mythical “best action camera.” Therefore, before making a choice, you need to decide on a range of priorities. these are the duration of the shooting, the strength and the quality of the video being shot. Let’s consider in turn each of THESE possible requirements.

The name of the GoPro brand has already become a household name and it is with it that the action camera is associated with most people. As with other similar things, the GoPro was the first popular camera for athletes to be massively used by video bloggers on Youtube. After that, the rapid growth of popularity began. It was with the GoPro camera that Selfie sticks became fashionable for both camcorders and photo cameras.

If priority. duration of shooting

With a modern lithium-ion battery, shooting can last up to five hours, although much will depend on the shooting mode. However, five hours. this is the maximum, most cameras offer a shooting duration of about two hours, and then it is important Pay attention to the possibility of recharging the battery, for example, from a car cigarette lighter.

When choosing a device, we look at the battery capacity (mA / h) and the manufacturer’s declared operating time. In practice, Sony’s models outperform GoPro and Garmin in this indicator, but there are lesser-known models like the Liquid EGO, which generally shoots up to 5 hours of video.

Which memory card to choose for an action camera?

Another factor that affects the duration of the shooting. memory card capacity. It is advisable to pick up a class 10 card, while taking into account that a standard 32G microSD memory card can hold about 200 minutes of video with a Full HD 1080p resolution or about 34 thousand photos at a resolution of 2560 × 1920 pixels (5 megapixels).

On a memory card It is better not to save money so that later there will be no problems with recording and reading video. The larger the volume, the better, this is understandable. We recommend to purchase a minimum of 32 gigabytes, or better 64, but the latest generation of modern cameras can seamlessly support the flash capacity of 128 GB.

If you use a memory card of 8 or less class, you risk disrupting the quality of streaming video recording. Memory cards with high-speed recording class 10 (UHS-I), capable of recording at speeds up to 10 megabytes per second, which fully meets the needs of the most advanced extreme cameras from Sony or GoPro.

If priority. strength

The very concept of an action camera assumes that it will be made of shock-resistant material. Today cameras of this type are made from Special alloys based on aluminum or impact-resistant plastic. Somewhat less common are models made of impact-resistant polyurethane-grilamide with steel inserts or thermoplastic polyurethane. The last two materials have a higher resistance to damaging influences of any kind.

If you buy a camera for underwater photography, then you should pay attention to what depth you will dive. With the Sony HDR-AS50, you can shoot videos underwater, at a depth of 5 meters, GoPro up to 60 meters.

In any case, all action cameras are positioned as devices with increased shock resistance, water resistance and dust resistance. The strength indicator is needed more for professionals who will shoot their videos in difficult and extreme conditions. For ordinary people, we advise you to lower the strength indicator, and concentrate on the monetary side of the issue and the quality of the shooting.

If priority. video quality

Almost all modern action cameras shoot videos with the highest quality. 1920 x 1080 pixels at 30 fps and Full HD 1080p.

Some models, such as the GoPro Hero5, offer even higher quality at the same frequency. 3,840 x 2,160 pixels. You can set the desired resolution yourself. High speed shooting is performed at an increased frequency. 60 or even 120 fps at Full HD 1920 x 1080 resolution.

If the survey is carried out in low light conditions, the camera should be empowered to adapt the shooting mode and have the infrared light.

Recording rate indicator (fps or frames per second)

FPS affects the quality of video recording and conveys the so-called “smoothness” of the picture. If you shoot video just for myself and for viewing on the camera’s monitor screen, you can select a budget camera, shoot with a frequency of 30 fps. But, if you are going to be editing video, doing some kind of slow motion (slow motion effect of video) for important frames, then you should pay attention to devices that support 60 or more frames per second, with the proper resolution.

The important characteristics include the aperture of the optics (diaphragm) and the angle of view of the camera. With aperture (light sensitivity), the tricky moment and the best Action Cameras like the Go-Pro Hero 5 and Sony HDR-AS50 are NOT the best. f / 2.8. The light sensitivity is greater. does not mean better.

Actually, little attention is paid to the aperture. You most importantly remember that the marketing moves of manufacturers aimed at showing this characteristic as the main value, nor in any way add it.

The angle of view of the camera is also important for the quality of shooting. Everything is simple here. the larger the angle, the fuller the area captured by the video will be. Today, action cameras shoot from an angle of 100-170 °, and the already mentioned GoPro Hero 5, thanks to SuperView technology, offers a greater view.

Tips for choosing an action camera or something else to look out for:

  • Connection to external devices. Some action cameras can be connected via the HDMI port directly to the TV and thus watch the footage, but here you need to take into account in what format the camera records video. MP4, MOV or AVI. Wi-Fi support;
  • Remote control capability. This option expands the possibilities of video recording and is sometimes very useful;
  • Sound. The characteristics of the microphone built into the camcorder will affect the sound quality, and if left unattended, the audio tracks can be “littered” with noise and crackling. You should NOT take this indicator to heart, all models have approximately the same microphones. In addition, for professional sound recording, separate voice recorders, microphones, etc. are used;
  • Fastening. The most common attachment points. this is a bicycle handlebar or helmet. However, the more mounts there are in the kit, the wider the possibilities of video shooting will be. Depending on your needs, you can choose mounts on the arm, on a tripod, on glasses, on a swing arm, on a mask, as well as on a number of surfaces. even and uneven, flat, spherical and curved. A good option is to choose a universal mount that combines solutions to all of these situations.

Alternatives to GoPro action cameras can be models from firms: Sony, Contour, Garmin, Drift and the Chinese SJCam. It is among them that you should choose a more budgetary model. Other manufacturers are less popular and you can “run into” a non-quality product.

Price comparison table:

Model Maximum video resolution Matrix, Mpix frame frequency Price, rub.
Gopro HERO 5 3840 x 2160 pixels (Ultra HD 4K) 12 30 fps at 3840 x 2160, 60 and 120 fps from 22,000

Top posts recently updated review 4 inexpensive Action Camera up to 10 thousand rubles, or 150 You can still choose a model in terms of price / quality. We advise all beginners and lovers of video shooting.

Having clearly defined what exactly will be required from the purchased action camera (shoot for a long time, shoot with the highest quality, or withstand some really extreme load), you can make the right choice, and not overpay extra money for unused options. Although, as they say, every thing is worth its money!

How GoPro differs from a regular camcorder?

People who have or have had an ordinary budget camcorder have probably more than once felt the desire to shoot under Unusual conditions and faced a host of problems, such as poor image quality, poor sound and discomfort during the shooting. A cool GoPro action camera has several distinct differences and undeniable advantages:

  • Lots of possibilities! Such useful properties as water resistance and shock resistance allow shooting under any conditions: while driving and fast driving, under water, above the ground and below it. Also, the device can be used for night shooting.
  • Compact and lightweight, the camera will NOT take up much space even in a small travel bag or suitcase full of things. It is ideal for travel and commuting.
  • High-quality picture. Intelligent video stabilization system allows you to achieve maximum clarity even when shooting on the move, when it is difficult to hold the device in one position.
  • The ability to shoot videos in different formats: HD, Full HD, 2K, 4K.
  • Uninterrupted operation and high quality video in all weather conditions. Even such vagaries of nature as snow, wind, heat, frost or rain. NOT a hindrance to shooting.
  • Shock-resistant housing provides reliable protection against mechanical damage, which are sometimes inevitable.
  • The device can be used as a full-fledged camcorder for video shooting and as a camera to take vivid pictures.
  • Noise canceling camera. It’s clear sound and no background noise.
  • Additional accessories allow you to shoot from any position and fix the device on different surfaces and objects, for example, on a guitar neck, on a panel or car glass. The kit may include frames and pads for mounting, USB cable. It is possible to purchase various specialized mounts for the arm, under the chest, on the head or on the helmet, on the handlebars, the frame or under the saddle of a bicycle, on weapons and even on animals. The list of accessories also includes Tripods and other useful accessories.
  • Action cameras with a display are as comfortable and easy to use as possible. Using the screen is simple: it displays the main functions, and the user only needs to find the one he wants and make a choice. Control can be carried out with one button, voice or using a mobile application, but modern models are also equipped with a touch screen (this includes HERO5 Black).
  • The camera is always ready to go, so you can capture the best moments of life at any time.

Where to apply the action camera?

Just a few years ago, action cameras were purchased and used exclusively by professional athletes filming their workouts, as well as fans of extreme and active entertainment. But today the device is becoming more and more popular among the most ordinary people, and not related to sports or extreme sports.

The action camera GoPro can be used in everyday life or while on vacation, on trips and travels, it will be an excellent assistant in the implementation of professional or other activities. Below, various areas of application of the device will be discussed in detail.

Active entertainment

Every lover of active entertainment had a desire to capture what he sees and experiences. But a conventional video camera does not allow this, since it must be held in hands, protected from mechanical damage and exposure to water. And GoPro is ideal for outdoor activities: it can be fixed on different parts of the body and sports equipment, but at the same time it has shock and water resistance properties.

Action camera GoPro can be used for extreme filming during such interesting and active entertainment as:

  • Rafting;
  • Diving;
  • Bike tracking;
  • Motocross;
  • Skateboarding;
  • Surfing;
  • Mountaineering;
  • Parasailing;
  • Zorbing;
  • Skating on regular or roller skates;
  • Climbing classes;
  • Skydiving;
  • Flights in a wind tunnel and others.

Good to know: the device is suitable for airsoft, paintball and other team games.

Favorite sport and training

GoPro action cameras will be appreciated by professional or novice athletes and amateurs. The device can be used to record workouts, and thanks to the secure mount system, it is appropriate for tennis, cycling, biathlon, snowboarding, skiing, football, swimming. It is suitable for all kinds of sports, including water, winter and beach.

People who keep their body in shape and visit fitness centers and sports clubs will be able to record workouts, record complex exercises and reproduce them on their own, as well as track the dynamics of workouts and identify and then eliminate errors. Sports life will become more interesting and varied.

Travel assistant

Action camera GoPro can be used as a car, replacing a full-fledged video recorder. A device with a loop recording will allow not only taking pictures while driving a personal vehicle, but also periodically erasing unnecessary ones, and not overflowing the memory and eliminating the need to delete them yourself. In addition, the camera can be installed on a bicycle, motorcycle, moped, ATV and other types of transport.

But do not forget about some of the nuances. First. impossibility to start shooting when starting the car. If the car recorder starts working when the driver starts the engine, then the action camera does not have this function. Also, the device is NOT equipped with a motion sensor, therefore it does not turn on when a person approaches, including a potential criminal. The second nuance. high price. Most DVRs are much cheaper and stealing a camera would be a big blow to your budget.

Action camera on fishing and hunting

The action camera can be used for fishing and hunting to capture the very process of searching and waiting, as well as moments of triumph and trophies themselves. Fishermen can mount the device on their body or on a fishing rod, and hunters can use gun mounts, which will make shooting even more dynamic and fun.

Using the GoPro while hunting and fishing is also possible thanks to its water resistance, stabilization function and shock resistance. You can not be distracted from the most important thing and did not survive: even if the camera falls into water or on a hard surface, it will remain intact and continue to function.

It should be noted that there is a whole range of camouflage housings on the market designed to hide glare from the sun, making the camera less visible.

To help the military

The military is on duty to regularly participate in exercises and other activities, and sometimes it is extremely difficult to identify mistakes made. But if you constantly record all actions on a mini-camera GoPro, then you can carry out a full analysis of them, disassemble the conducted exercises, fully assess the progress of tasks.

GoPro devices can be used for real-time or covert shooting during the work of employees of Special units, detective or security agencies, law enforcement agencies. The materials obtained in some cases become evidence or alibis and help to conduct investigations or carry out other professional activities.

The world through the eyes of animals

The pet mount action camera will become the favorite device of the owner of a dog, cat or other pet. There are several application options, and the first one. for fun and entertainment. The device will allow you to see this world through the eyes of animals and understand their behavior a little better. Second option. hunting. If dogs take part in it, they will be able to capture the process of epaulettes and, for example, track down especially nimble game.

There is also a third option. the work of specially trained animals such as rescuers and search dogs. The camera will become a means of their more understandable and productive interaction with people: the data obtained can be used for searches, terrain assessment and for other purposes.

Non-standard applications

Extreme sports, professional activities and hobbies. Far from all areas of application of GoPro devices, there are more non-standard ones. So, a camera with good sound and high-quality image can become an assistant for a novice director or operator.

By the way, there are already films completely shot on such devices.

Action cameras can be used while visiting all kinds of attractions. Also, the device can be used when carrying out repair and other work in unusual or inaccessible places: on the roofs and walls of high-rise buildings, in mines.

Capture your best moments

We thank the XT.HT administration for the opportunity to share unique, high-quality and, we hope, interesting content.!

How is a DSLR camera different from a conventional one? What is the difference between a DSLR and a non-mirror camera? What are the advantages of a mirror and where is it built in? How is a DSLR different from a regular one? What are the pros, cons?

Most of the capabilities of a DSLR will become available for use only with a fluency in manual exposure control modes and a good understanding of the essence and physics of the photography process. Otherwise, the camera’s capabilities will remain only capabilities, the money for which has been paid, and which you will NOT be able to use.

That is, you must be both technically and financially (this is at least 30-50t. R. To the cost of the camera itself for good optics) ready to switch to a DSLR, which by itself does NOT provide an automatic increase in the quality of images in comparison with soap dish.

If you think that you have all this (experience and means). Just take any camera of any manufacturer that fits better in your hand, that is, it seems to you personally more convenient. In the same price range, cameras from different manufacturers differ only in ergonomics and design.

If you don’t have this, then it’s too early for you to take a DSLR. This class of cameras, by and large, is designed for fairly competent and thoughtful photographers, for whom photography has already become a serious hobby, in which they are ready to invest serious money (tens of tons per year). And spends a lot of time.

Look towards shooters like Fuji S200EXR, Canon G11 (12), Canon S90. In most cases, and even more so in automatic shooting modes, these cameras are NOT inferior to DSLRs, and in some ways they will surpass them. As for the functional equipment, these cameras are in no way inferior to DSLRs and have everything you need in order to learn how to shoot.

The Difference of a SLR Camera | The world through the prism

What’s so special about DSLRs? How is it different from usual?

It’s very simple: there is a mirror inside the camera. It is it that allows us to see the picture and transfers information to the camera matrix.

The diagram shows how the light passes through the lens, hits the mirror, is reflected and hits the prism, and you see the image. When you press the shutter button, the mirror rises for a split second, and light in the right dose hits the matrix. Snapshot ready!

And yet, what is the difference between a DSLR and a conventional one?

A conventional camera has mirror systems. The light goes directly through the lens to the sensor and you can see the picture on the screen. But the difference is that on the screen you cannot see what really is, but what the camera sees. And he applies various filters to the continuously falling light to adjust exposure, contrast, saturation.

Professional photographers choose SLR cameras for their work. Complex in design, they allow their owner to fully control the entire process of shooting and bring to life the most daring plans. The shutter of such a camera works instantly.,

These cameras are quite expensive, and besides, they require the purchase of additional lenses and accessories.

Typically, expensive SLR cameras are sold without a lens, the so-called body. Or with a kit lens. But such lenses often allow you to realize all the capabilities of the camera, since they have not very good lenses and aperture. And if a person shoots in several genres, then sometimes he needs to have as many as three lenses, the price of which may even exceed the cost of the camera itself.

However, there is a sufficient number of budget SLR cameras, which will be quite affordable for an amateur photographer.

Of course, I understand that even a budget SLR camera looks impressive and promising. But I would like to note that digital cameras’ technologies do not stand still, and some cameras in their characteristics may well compete with DSLRs. In addition, there are many positive aspects to compact cameras.

How is a DSLR camera different from a conventional one?

A SLR camera is called because it has an optical viewfinder consisting of a shaft in which a mirror (or a system of mirrors) is installed. There are single-lens and dual-lens reflex cameras.

At the moment when photographing takes place, the mirror of the camera device (number 6 in the image) rises, the shutter of the camera (number 7) opens. At this moment, the light falls directly on the camera matrix and the frame is exposed. photographing. Then the shutter closes, the mirror is lowered back, and the camera is ready for the next shot. It is necessary to understand that all this complex process inside takes place in a split second. This is the device of a DSLR digital camera.

In the picture below, you can see for yourself what a single-lens reflex camera is and how it works inside. To “press the shutter button” of the DSLR shown in the picture below, just click on the picture, just Note that a real camera works much faster :-)!

Click on the image of the DSLR to look inside the camera

In a single-lens reflex camera [Single-Lens] sighting (framing and camera settings) occurs through the shooting lens and the mirror system. This system of mirrors serves only for adjusting the camera and does not take any part in the process of photographing (exporting the frame), but only interferes, because. Located between the camera lens and the matrix (or film, if we consider the operation of a film SLR camera).

Therefore, after the SLR camera is set up for photography and the photographer has pressed the button, the mirror rises and only after that the shutter opens. After closing the shutter, the mirror is lowered back to its original position to adjust the next frame. Because of this, nothing is visible in the viewfinder at the time of shooting. This disadvantage is found in two-lens reflex cameras.

In two-lens reflex cameras, sighting and photography are performed through different lenses. And it is necessary to raise the mirror before exposing the frame. This simplifies the shutter mechanism and the cost and reliability of the camera.

In a two-lens reflex camera, the focus rings of both lenses are mechanically linked and work synchronously during focusing. However, when replacing the shooting lens, you need to change the focusing lens. In addition, when shooting at close distances, the distance between the axes of the focusing and shooting lenses should be taken into account. This misalignment of the axes of the viewfinder and lens is called parallax. Due to the prallax, the boundaries of sight and the frame itself do not coincide a little, and the closer the distance to the object being shot, the more noticeable this discrepancy.

How a digital SLR camera works

If the video “slows down” while watching, press pause and wait 3-4 minutes until the video is fully loaded, then start watching over.

What is the difference between a DSLR and mirrorless cameras

In principle, it is clear with a DSLR: this is primarily a professional device, although recently models for beginners have appeared on the market. They are cheaper, but they do not have the best optics, and the functionality is a little limited. First of all, they are equipped with convenient controls and, most importantly, an automatic shooting mode.

Mirrorless camera device

It is easy to guess that the idea behind this technology involves the rejection of the mirror. Olympus and Panasonic. the first manufacturers of THESE hybrid cameras. Although recently there have been a lot of them on the market, and they have successfully proven that they are capable of making healthy competition for DSLRs.

Mirrorless camera device

The main difference in the design: in a mirror chamber, the light flux is directed to a pentaprism mirror, then. in the viewfinder, when the shutter is released, the direction changes and the stream falls on the light-sensitive matrix. In the mirrorless version, the light flux immediately falls on the matrix (1). Here a preview is possible thanks to the image readout by the processor (2) directly from the matrix. The image read by the processor is displayed on an electronic viewfinder, which is a simple LCD display (3).

Mirrorless camera

Advantages and disadvantages

First of all, I would like to note: the idea of removing the mirror viewfinder from the design and replacing it with a processor with an electronic viewfinder looks good, and it even has its advantages. First of all, the advantages relate to dimensions: mirrorless cameras are more compact, so their owners can take these devices with them for a walk. Mirrors lose in this regard. they are large, and it is not always convenient to carry this device with you even in a special bag.

However compactness. it’s not always good. Mirrors are very comfortable to hold due to their large size, but the grip of a mirrorless is not always convenient.

In matrices

In a soap dish, light-sensitive matrices are often used, which, in terms of characteristics, are much inferior to the sensors used in DSLRs. Mirrorless devices also use sensors, just like DSLRs. This allows you to get excellent quality pictures. However, full-frame sensors cannot be used in mirrorless cameras, but they are often unnecessary. Full-frame sensors are required for exceptional shooting situations, therefore, this is a very dubious plus in favor of SLR cameras.

Roughly in the same way that carpenters differ from the Egyptians. There are Egyptians NOT carpenters and carpenters NOT Egyptians and, finally, there is bingo.

A digital camera has a matrix as an element that captures an image. CCD, CMOS or any of their variations. The lens or pinhole hole projects the image onto the matrix, the shutter speed is worked out, and the image is taken according to the saturation of the elements. When the element is 100% saturated. it’s 255 to that channel (eg red). Then the image is subjected to some kind of processing, converted to JPEG and written either in RAW with minimal processing and previews in the form of JPEG, or in JPEG or RAWJPEG, or DNG, or TIFF. In almost all modern cameras, when shooting, you can take an image from the matrix and sight on the screen or the viewfinder. I.e. no problem with film cameras when you DO NOT see what you are shooting and what you focus on.

The film device does NOT drive the signal anywhere. It works out the shutter speed at a certain aperture, projects the image onto the media. film, and further to development, fixing and scanning or printing, you do not know at all how it turned out. (There is also medium format, film or digital, by the way, and it has its own DSLRs and rangefinders.) To solve the sighting problem, separate technologies are used for frame composition and for assessing focus:

  • Scale chambers. The distance is set according to the scale on the lens. 3m, 1.5m and so on. Equipped with a parallax viewfinder, but no focus confirmation at all. Dual lens cameras are often scaled. (LOMO CompactAutomat, Change 8M.)
  • Auto focus viewfinder. Focus and pray that the focal point is where you need it.
  • Focusless lens plus parallax viewfinder. Knowing the distance limits, you get the shot in focus. In fact, this is a hyperfocal lens, and it is not aperture. That is, conventionally, everything from the house to the horizon (1.5m. ∞) will be in focus. precisely. the same soap. Where did the name soap dish come from?
  • Rangefinder. Viewfinder with parallax and usually a patch indicating focus hop. It already looks like a figure. You can frame the frame and see what’s in focus. (Leica, FED, Sharp, Canon Canonet.)
  • DSLR. Sometimes with autofocus (phase sensors). Viewfinder with less than 99% view through the lens. Organized through pentaprism and mirror. where is she from and the DSLR. The mirror obscures the film and rises at the time of the photo. This is similar to a number too, because the focus score and the view through the lens. (Zenith ET, Minolta, Pentax.)

Now, if the DSLR has a matrix, memory, percent and a memory card instead of a film. this is a digital SLR (digital mirror).

In the world of digital cameras, almost everyone behaves somewhat like a DSLR. that is, sighting goes through the lens. This gives us advantages. the ability to evaluate what is in focus and a specific composition of the frame without parallax correction.

Digitalists, in turn, are:

  • Telephones
  • Soap dishes
  • Compacts
  • Bridge cameras / ultrazoom. soap dish / compact with small matrix and optical zoom 24x, 48x and more
  • Rangefinders
  • Mirrors
  • Mirrorless

A DSLR differs from a compact and a phone in its large matrix. This cannot but affect. With dill from 2 to 1.5 and up to 1, we get noticeably smoother halftones, better detail, higher image quality, a small amount of noise in the light and more or less moderate in low light, all other things being equal (year of release, generation of the matrix). A mirrorless camera does not differ from a DSLR in almost nothing. with matrices of about the same size. crop 2, 1.5, 1. the quality will be exactly the same. Except for the Pentax Q and Nikon 1, in which the crop is closer to the soapy one and the corresponding quality. Otherwise, the quality very much depends on the optics, generation and characteristics of the matrix, strapping, processor, firmware.

The DSLR differs only in the presence of an optical viewfinder through the lens. In rangefinder this is a through viewfinder with parallax, in mirrorless cameras it is a hybrid with parallax (less often), digital or its absence (more often). And the presence of a phase focus, which is considered, if not more precisely, then certainly faster. Although now it is gradually appearing already in the mirrorless. DSLR problems: large size and weight, large optics, scary appearance, the viewfinder field of view is NOT larger than the frame size and often less than 96%, the need for calibers of the optics to treat focus misses. Rangefinder problems: parallax. Problems with mirrorless cameras: often braking autofocus, although it depends on the model, and a constantly heating matrix, which in theory could give more noise by the end of the shooting and less battery life. Ultrazoom problems: they were eaten by mirrorless cameras, phones and soap dishes.

Hope that helps.

What is the difference between a DSLR and a digital camera

The question is which camera is better. SLR or digital, sooner or later it comes before anyone trying to choose a new camera for themselves. Both types are “heard”, so the choice is often quite difficult. It is worth mentioning that “mirror” and “digital”. this is purely a characteristic of the technical parameters. A SLR camera may well be both film and digital. Digital, on the other hand, can be mirrored or non-mirrored, therefore it is impossible to compare these concepts: it is worth comparing a digital SLR and non-mirrored cameras.

Features of digital cameras

A digital camera uses a matrix to take an image. a photosensitive plate, consisting of autonomous cells-elements. With the help of a lens system, which are in the lens, the image is focused on the matrix. Further, the matrix already focuses the image according to the light parameter. The picture is then saved either in the memory of the camera, or on from an extended medium. an ordinary graphic file. This principle of operation is characteristic of both non-mirror digital cameras and SLR.

DSLR and non-mirror cameras

On DSLR digital cameras, an additional mirror viewfinder is also installed. Thus, a mirror-prism system is located in the channel with the help of which the image frames are taken before shooting. With its help, the image enters the eyepiece of the camera, and there the photographer can see the picture before shooting. That is, in SLR cameras you can see the picture in the viewfinder in advance. This is a very convenient technological solution that helps the photographer to well adjust the frame boundaries, illumination and sharpness of the subject, as well as to set the depth of the space that is being photographed.

A significant advantage of a DSLR viewfinder is the fact that it does not undergo changes in the apparent placement of the subject if the position of the photographer changes: light enters it directly through the lens.

A non-reflex camera shoots exclusively with an orientation to the LCD monitor. it is used instead of the viewfinder. The picture is also displayed here in the shooting, but its resolution is very low, the brightness and colors are also weak. Only after shooting will the photographer be able to assess what the frame will be like. In a non-mirrored digital camera, the optical viewfinder is displaced in comparison with the axis of the main lens. As a result, the viewfinder is already exposed to parallax. the movement of the photographer during shooting.

In SLR cameras there is the possibility of using an interchangeable lens. it is very rare in non-mirrored ones. Also, the quality of images in SLR cameras can be significantly improved if you use high-quality optics for specific needs.

Several conclusions

So, we can summarize the comparisons:

  • Digital camera and SLR camera. these are fundamentally different parameters of cameras that cannot be compared with each other. Only mirrors and non-mirrors, digital and non-digital (film) are compared.
  • Both types of cameras. mirrored and non-mirrored. use a matrix to obtain and process images.
  • In SLR cameras there is additionally a viewfinder, which allows a picture without distortion even before shooting. In non-mirrored cameras, the viewfinder is subjected to parallax and displays the picture in shooting in much poorer quality.
  • In SLR digital cameras, you can change lenses. If we talk about non-mirror digital cameras, then this is extremely rare.

Thus, everyone can choose for themselves that type of camera, which is more convenient for a specific type of activity. A professional photographer will surely choose a digital mirror gadget, a non-professional one will be enough and a non-reflective one. are also usually higher in mirrors than in non-mirrors, although much depends on the manufacturer. In any case, a DSLR and a non-mirror camera with a similar feature set from the same manufacturer will cost differently. mirror is more expensive.

What is the difference between a DSLR and a non-mirror camera? What are the advantages of a mirror and where is it built-in?

The difference between a DSLR and a digital camera is that the picture is visible through the viewfinder (modern models can also be equipped with a large LCD display). Transferred to a matrix or film without any distortion or modification. Getting into the lens, the light flux falls on the mirror, which directs it into the viewfinder using a prism. At the time of shooting, the mirror deflects, and instead of the viewfinder, the light flux is directed to the matrix or film. SLR cameras allow the most accurate setting of all shooting parameters (aperture, shutter speed, focal length, etc.). Since during the adjustment process, all changes can be seen in the viewfinder. In total, you get exactly what you expect.

So what is the best DSLR? The main advantages of a DSLR are as follows: 1. correct color reproduction and a larger physical size of the matrix provide unsurpassed image quality. No further ado, just look at the pictures to see the difference:

You can use different lenses depending on your subject and purpose: wide-angle, tele- and macro lenses, portrait lenses, zoom lenses, zoom lenses, architectural shift lenses, lenses with special effects such as tilt-shift lenses or soft lenses to create haze without losing sharpness. Filters greatly expand the possibilities and simplify the work of the photographer, with which you can eliminate glare, change the relative brightness of certain tones, tonal contrast, etc.

The SLR focuses instantly for continuous shooting. you can shoot multiple frames per second. Shooting occurs immediately after pressing the shutter button, which is very convenient when shooting moving objects.

You can manually adjust the focus and sharpness of the picture. in this, the automation of compact digital cameras, as you probably noticed, makes mistakes quite often.

That is why DSLRs are purchased Not only for those for whom photography is a job or a hobby, but also for those who need a camera just to take pictures with friends.

How an action camera differs from a regular one and why buy it

In recent years, a special genre of spectacle has emerged on the Internet. videos filmed with an action camera. These videos are usually shot by those who love to tickle their own nerves, who want to capture their adventures. Typical users of action cameras. extreme sportsmen, roofers, travelers, all kinds of fishermen and hunters.

However, such cameras are filmed Not only Overflowing with natural beauty and adrenaline video. If we are talking about a blogger and various celebrities leading an active life on the Internet, then they shoot almost any everyday moments with action cameras:

At the origin

The first action cameras were created by the American company GoPro, and it soon became clear that it opened a new direction in the design of video cameras. Nowadays, few people remember that the first GoPro model called GP Hero from 2005 was film and took only photographs. 24 shots on 35mm Kodak film. However, already in 2006, the first digital GoPro camera with 16 MB of internal memory appeared, and the next year. model with memory card slot.

For more than 10 years of evolution, GoPro have come to the current flagship. Hero6 Black models. It can shoot video in 4K (the onboard battery lasts for 1 hour of shooting with this resolution) and immerse itself in water to a depth of 10 m without additional aqua box.

Other manufacturers also produce their action cameras, although they remain in the position of catching up with the market leader. GoPro. Many users find interesting models for themselves from Sony, SJCAM, Xiaomi, Garmin and other manufacturers.

Key features of action cameras

The main task of an action camera. this is shooting in motion and in an environment that is aggressive to the equipment (and often to the operator). In this regard, we highlight several features of this technique.

action, camera, different, usual

Small size and minimum weight

The requirement here is simple. the camera should not prevent a person from doing what he intended: rolling down a mountain on a bicycle, riding on the roof of a train, going down on a snowboard on virgin snow, or diving on Coral Reef. If an ordinary good camera weighs about 500 g, then the same GoPro Hero6 Black. only 74 g.

Good security

Shocks, vibrations, splashing water and simply high humidity, extreme heat or frost. these are the usual working conditions for action cameras. Additionally, they can be installed in aqua boxes and removed at a depth of 50-60 m.

Ability to capture high-quality images regardless of the environment

It may seem that a small action camera will shoot worse than conventional models. In fact, this is not the case. If we compare video cameras in terms of matrix and lens sizes, then the same latest models from GoPro are NOT inferior to their “household” counterparts, but in some characteristics even surpass them.

The most striking confirmation of the practically NOT limited capabilities of modern action cameras is that they are often used in the film industry. For example, Ilya Nayshuller completely shot his fantastic action movie Hardcore (2015) with GoPro cameras. The first-person shooter film was screened in the US and other countries.

Essential components of modern action cameras. digital image stabilization and a system that ensures the quality of photos and videos in low light.

Wide viewing angle

In action cameras, the viewing angle is from 90 to 170 degrees, in ordinary cameras it is much smaller. The use of special lenses is justified by the need to get the widest image and minimize the area of ”dead zones”. Working with an action camera assumes that the shooting is automatic and the operator does not see how accurately the target he needs is in the frame. With further editing, you can crop and cut off unnecessarily captured shooting areas, leaving only the most necessary.

Increased write speed

Once upon a time, we were amazed and delighted with a video shot at 60 frames per second, but today the bar has been raised. Hero6 Black (and not only her) can shoot in Full HD at 240 frames per second. What is it for? Firstly, in extreme sports, there are too many fast actions and fast movements, and the camera must capture them without blurring the picture. Secondly, the same 240 frames per second allows you to make beautiful videos in slo-mo.

Attachment to anything

The design features of the action cameras’ bodies and a wide range of accessories allow them to be installed almost anywhere. The most common mounting options. helmet, bicycle handlebars, fender or windshield of a car, drone. However, with the help of all kinds of straps, Velcro and suction cups, action cameras are installed on more unexpected bases. For example, they are attached to the wings of aircraft and turrets of tanks (real ones, not a model, although on them too), on dogs, ski socks, spearfishing guns or hang glider frame elements.

If you regularly shoot something on the go, and even more so in difficult conditions, then you cannot do without an action camera in your arsenal. It is not needed, perhaps, only when shooting some static pictures in the studio, for example, a conversation between two people at a table. If spontaneity and the very action are supposed, then GoPro or some of its analogues will be simply an irreplaceable tool.

What is Action Camera? Features and purpose

Unlike a regular camera that captures weddings, birthdays and just street walks, Action Cameras have a completely different purpose. They. for extreme lovers and people, and not imagining their life without adrenaline and thrills. It is precisely for recording the descent along mountain rivers, flights under the canopy of a parachute and other dynamic events that Action Cameras are intended. Today is Action Camera. this is almost an obligatory attribute of an athlete, and it is radically different from the simplest one. We will talk about the differences.

Appearance, dimensions and weight

This is visual and the first difference that catches the eye. The Action Camera should be lightweight and small in size, with special mounts. For a simple camera, weight and size are also important, but much less attention is paid to these factors. With active recreation and dynamics, the extra weight on the athlete’s body can be of decisive importance. How much does the simplest video recording device weigh? About 500 grams? An action camera can’t weigh that much. Its weight is 20-30 grams, and the size. almost a matchbox.

Impact and water resistant

The materials of manufacture of this device must be durable, and serious requirements are imposed on them. Typically, these devices are made from aluminum-based metals (they are light and strong) and reinforced plastic. This is extremely important, and if the same materials were used in the manufacture that are used in the production of simple cameras, then the action devices would break, break or simply fail due to water after the first descent from the mountain river.

Action devices have a large operating temperature range, they are NOT afraid of moisture, water, or heat, and even a fall of this device from a great height will NOT break it. But a simple one, if it falls out of the operator’s holes with holes, is likely to break or scatter to smithereens.

Video quality

For an ordinary video camera, the standard shooting resolution is 720×576 pixels. However, most modern models record video in much higher resolution, this is a fact.

The Action Cameras currently on sale are labeled Full HD. This means that the video is recorded in 1280×720 or 1920×1080 format. this is now the highest frame resolution requirement. However, the camcorders do not differ in this parameter. Still, it was worth mentioning the permission.

Video recording rate

25-30 frames per second. this is the video recording speed of the conventional model. Devices with the “action” prefix have a special mode. accelerated recording, at which the speed is 60 frames per second. Is this parameter important and what is it for? Take, for example, a regular wedding or other celebration. here all the events are slow and predictable, the recording is calm and smooth, the high recording speed, at least, is superfluous here.

An example of video recording on an Action camera:

An extreme, riding a bicycle in mountainous terrain, rushes at high speed, landscapes change quickly, and a simple camera is simply not able to record everything: some frames may either be missing or get very blurry. Therefore, a high recording speed is necessary for shooting dynamic scenes. it guarantees the parity of recording extreme events.

Availability of fasteners

Design features. this is another important attribute and difference. On a helmet, on clothing, on the arm or handlebars of a bicycle. the device can be fixed anywhere. The kit always comes with a set of fasteners for different places.

Most often, this device clings to helmets, and any. cycling, motorcycle and even those that are worn by parachutists. Also, on the handlebars of bicycles, that is, on tubular structures, they are also very easily “pulled”. We must not forget about motor sports. Action Cameras are attached with suction cups to the windshield of the car. Yes, they can even be used as car recorders.

Lens and angle of view

Wide viewing angle. it is also a feature of Action Camera. She “knows” how to shoot video with an angle from 90 to 170 degrees. This is much more than the angle of view of a simple camera. Such a large angle is necessary in order to shoot as wide shots as possible without “dead” zones. Of course, it is impossible to achieve the absence of THESE “dead” zones, but still. After all, an operator always works with a simple camera, but an action one. she is always on her own and removes everything automatically, without an operator.

In general, these are the main differences, thanks to which it becomes clear what an Action Camera is and why it is needed.

Action Camera: how it differs and how to choose the best model for underwater photography

  • What it is
  • What makes an underwater camera different
  • What to look for when choosing
  • Which action camera to choose

It would seem that until recently, each photograph was worth its weight, if not gold, then at least silver. The photographers took care of each shot, trying not to waste the film just like that, and then developed it for a long time. Today it is difficult to surprise someone with cameras: they are found in all mobile phones and tablets. A similar fate befell video cameras: just 20 years ago, most could only dream of a simple amateur camera, but today their choice is much greater. One of the types of video cameras are action cameras.

What it is

Their name comes from the English “Actioncamera”. it is a special camera designed for extreme conditions. Usually they are used by extreme sportsmen: such cameras are NOT afraid of water, wind and dirt.

The first cameras of this type were invented by the American company GoPro in 2012. they were the first to develop camcorders that can handle the most incredible conditions. Of course, the first attempts to attach a camera to the head or arms were recorded back in the middle of the last century, but then the result was NOT too successful.

Due to its small size and light weight, the camera can be mounted on the human body, thereby providing freedom of movement

The difference between action cameras includes:

  • Small dimensions: this type of camera is rather small, takes up literally half of the palm.
  • Light weight: action models weigh no more than 30-50 grams, while ordinary video cameras can weigh up to half a kilogram.
  • Special mounts: most often cameras are mounted on helmets, belts, arms or neck, they can also be mounted on the handlebars of a bicycle or motorcycle. This allows you to shoot video from the first person. Some cameras can also be attached to pet collars.
  • Body: Action cameras have extremely durable bodies that protect them from dust, dirt, sand, impact on the ground, and in some models from water.
  • Viewing angle: it reaches up to 170 degrees, which means that it covers much more than a simple camera. Some models are Spherical, that is, they “look” both forward and backward.
  • Shooting quality: these parameters in Action Camera are much higher. Models record about 60 frames per second versus 30 frames in a conventional camera. this allows NOT to miss a moment in a frequently changing picture. The resolution of the models is at least 1280 720 pixels versus 720 576 pixels in a conventional camera. Also, the cameras are distinguished by high clarity and sharpness, a fixed-focus lens, which allows you to get high quality pictures.

Attention! Unlike autofocus, which “catches” a separate subject and follows it, fixed focus determines the distance and clearly shoots everything that falls into it. This allows you to get NOT blurry video.

Action cameras are used in a wide variety of fields where a first person view is required:

  • While practicing extreme sports: alpine skiing, snowboarding, mountain biking, parachuting, parkour and others.
  • For underwater filming while diving or surfing.
  • When conducting military tests.
  • As a video recorder when driving a car or motorcycle.
  • In 2011, action cameras were first used for filming a television series, although Subsequently, they were replaced by similar options, but giving better resolution.

In other words, such camera options are extremely demanded in many areas where high-quality picture and hands-free are required.

What makes an underwater camera different

It is often used by professionals and amateurs of diving: a waterproof camera allows you to show the beauty of the underwater world to everyone without distorting the picture. According to the field of application, the survey is divided into:

  • Amateur;
  • Scientific;
  • Industrial;
  • Military and intelligence.

The parameters of the required camera also differ depending on the goals. For example, video for military and industrial needs should be of high image quality, and amateur. low price if the owner is only going to try himself as an operator.

According to their parameters, action cameras are divided into:

  • Aqua boxes: these are durable covers made of transparent plastic, which help to protect the equipment from moisture. You can put any equipment in them and take photos or shoot videos. They are cheaper and easier to use than action cameras, however, in order to obtain a good result, it is desirable to have a good technique initially;
  • Protected compact models: they allow you to dive to a depth of 20 meters and make high-quality enough for amateur photos and videos. The disadvantages of such a camera include the lack of mounts for a helmet, that is, it must be held in your hands;
  • Action cameras. This is a full-fledged model that can be attached to a suit or helmet. They are smaller than previous versions and the ability to free your hands.

The main difference between any option and simple cameras. in waterproof.

The camera body must be reliably protected from shocks and drops

What to look for when choosing

When choosing an action camera for underwater photography, the first step is to make sure it is waterproof. The accidental purchase of another model will reduce all dreams in the underwater world to comments. Next, pay attention to:

  • Dimensions and weight: the smaller they are, the more inconspicuous the camera will be during use. And if the weight is not very important (under water it is unlikely to play any role), then the dimensions of the model are quite important;
  • Durability of the case: it should provide good protection against impacts and falls. Most often, an aluminum alloy, heavy-duty plastic or polyurethane-grilamide with steel inserts are used for it. The latter is the most durable, but rare;
  • Mounts: you need to decide in advance what the camera will be attached to, and purchase all the accessories you need for this, for example, a helmet. Mounts Must be strong, holding the camera well;
  • Battery capacity: the larger it is, the longer you can shoot. The maximum filming time can be up to 5 hours, but in most cases the buyer can count on 2-3 hours;
  • Memory card capacity: the larger the value, the more video will fit on the card. Also, a large capacity will allow you to record better videos. It is not worth saving on this: you will NOT be able to win a lot of money, and the pleasure from the result can be spoiled by the lack of proper quality;
  • Shooting quality and angle of view: these parameters must be selected based on individual preferences. Someone will need a small angle of view to show movement, someone, on the contrary, would like to capture as much as possible;
  • Microphone: you will only need it if the camera will be used on land, as it is rather difficult to record sound underwater;
  • Remote Control: It allows you to control the camera without taking it off. Convenient, but not always practical thing that you have to pay for;
  • Additional devices: helmets, fasteners, tripod and more. They are also selected individually;
  • Cost: If the action camera is not purchased for several trials, it is worth choosing the more expensive and proven models. They will last several years without any complaints. If you need a camera for one summer, you should choose a simpler option.

When choosing an action camera, it is necessary to determine in advance in what conditions it will be used, and what you want to get from it. If the buyer is looking for regular filming and high quality videos, they will need a professional model. If a camcorder is required for several submerged underwater while on vacation, it makes sense to take a closer look at waterproof camera housings.
