But how different is the iPhone 11 Pro Max compared to the iPhone XS Max? What are the differences between the two phones? We read about this and not only in our review.
The iPhone XS Max has been at the peak of its popularity with users since last year. But when the iPhone 11 Pro Max came out, it quickly overtook it. Let’s see, is the iPhone 11 Pro Max really that good compared to the iPhone XS Max? Should you upgrade your phone to a new one? Well, let’s find out in comparison. If you are already unhappy with your gadget, then of course it is worth updating it. But in many ways, phones are similar.
iPhone 11 XS Max: 157.5 x 77.4 x 7.7mm and 208g. IP68 certified.
iPhone 11 Pro Max: 158 x 77.8 x 8.1mm, 226g. IP68 certified.
The iPhone 11 Pro Max is heavier than the iPhone XS Max, although it is almost the same size. The iPhone 11 Pro Max can dive up to 4m, while the iPhone XS Max only 2m, despite both being IP68 certified. The iPhone 11 Pro Max differs significantly from the iPhone XS Max in terms of matte finish and new color availability. Midnight Green. Face ID on iPhone 11 Pro Max has been significantly improved with a wider field of view. It also supports Dolby Atmos, which the iPhone XS Max couldn’t, and an improved speaker that supports surround sound for surround sound capabilities.
Here, the iPhone Pro Max is no different from the iPhone XS Max. Provides the same 64GB of internal storage and comes in 256GB and 512GB variants.
iPhone XS Max. A12 Bionic, 7nm Chip, 2nd Generation Neural Engine.
iPhone 11 Pro Max. A13 Bionic, 7nm EUV, 3rd generation neural engine.
The A13 Bionic is 20% more powerful and more energy efficient than the A12 Bionic. The GPU is up to 30% faster than before. While the power consumption dropped to 40%. The A13 chip contains a number of improvements that will allow the iPhone 11 Pro Max to last longer. Also, the chip, in combination with the processor, performs more than a trillion operations per second.
Battery life and charging
iPhone XS Max lasts up to 30 minutes longer than iPhone X. iPhone 11 Pro Max. 18W USB-C charging lasts up to 5 hours longer than iPhone XS Max. In terms of battery life, the iPhone 11 Pro Max also made a huge leap forward. It can last up to 5 hours longer than the iPhone XS Max. This improvement means the phone can easily handle a rough and difficult day, while the iPhone XS Max can fail. The 18W USB-C adapter ensures your phone can charge from 0 to 50% in just half an hour. Both phones support 7.5W wireless charging.
IPhone 11 and iPhone 12, what are the differences and the difference?
And so, let’s start with the color scheme. As it was clear from the presentation, a new feature of this lineup is blue, or rather “Blue” or “Pacific Blue” in the Pro versions. Colors such as “Yellow” and “Purple” have disappeared from the color gamut, although for the whole of 2020, purple iPhones 11 were the most purchased.
Now let’s move on to the price difference, which we will return to once again to summarize. The starting price of the iPhone 12 is 799 and the iPhone 11 now starts at 599. At first glance, the difference is quite significant, because between the same XR and 11 this difference was only 100. Let’s see if it’s worth paying this money for innovations, and let’s take into account that we are in Ukraine, and more specifically in Kiev, and the announced newest 5G technology will be available in our country no earlier than in a couple of years, which clearly reduces the relevance of the new iPhone.
What has changed in the Camera is the new Dolby Vision HDR video technology, how much it costs to overpay for it is not yet clear. The battery life of the smartphone remains the same. But the aluminum case on the front panel now has a ceramic coating. Ceramic Shield promises that the glass of your iPhone 12 will be 4 times less susceptible to breaking, in fact, we will check it all with crash tests.
As for the water resistance of the iPhone 12, the immersion depth has increased from 2x to 6 meters, while the time remains 30 minutes. As before, Apple gently hints to its users that moisture penetration into the device is not a warranty case. Absolutely new, and in many ways quite convenient MagSafe feature, previously used on MacBook. Now you can magnet on the back of the iPhone both a wallet and a wireless charger, and maybe other interesting gadgets, which greatly expands the capabilities of the back of the device. At the same time, the memory with which the smartphone is produced has remained unchanged. 64 128 and 256 GB respectively.
Now let’s move on to the new technology that makes the new iPhone 12 a really cool gadget. The new “Super Retina XDR” is a new generation display that is no longer IPS, but OLED with a pixel count of 2532 × 1170 versus 1792 × 828. But that’s not all, the Contrast is now the same as in flagships. Contrast ratio is 2,000,000: 1, compared to the previous iPhone 11 indicators. Contrast ratio is 1,400: 1. The new iPhone is also lighter and smaller than its predecessor, while still being the same size at 6.1 inches.
And of course, a new unique design, behind which everyone has been so stuck with the iPhone 5. How boring are these rounded edges for so many years.
Let’s be honest, get a new design, a cool display like the flagships, and in addition display protection, for a difference of 200. At first glance, these are not great advantages, but let’s not forget about the new processor, and let’s estimate that buying a flagship will cost at least 300-400 dollars and it will be the iPhone 11 Pro, and certainly not the last iPhone 12. As a conclusion. not such a big overpayment, and there is definitely something to pay for!
iPhone 11 or iPhone XR. which one to choose?
Many are tormented by the question of what to choose, iPhone XR or iPhone 11? Is there a global difference between them and is there any point in overpaying about 10 thousand rubles?
In this article, we’ll break down the main differences between the two models, and I’ll also share with you my personal experience and impressions of the iPhone 11 after using the iPhone XR for a year. Or you can watch our YouTube video, which also covers the main points.
BODY AND COLORS Blue and coral are replaced by green and purple.
We slightly changed the shade of red, now it is “more” red (pictured). The body itself has remained virtually unchanged, except for the shape of the camera. Holding the phone in hand, it is indistinguishable from the XR.
The A13 Bionic replaces its predecessor, the A12. Yes, this processor does a better job of post-production and video editing, but in terms of performance, and the A12 found in the iPhone XR will not disappoint you.
The difference in processors will affect only in a few years, when the new iOS will be more demanding on the resources of the phone.
MAIN CAMERA. Taken a noticeable step forward, the camera is now dual-camera, an ultra-wide-angle lens has been added.
Optical zoom down (the XR did not have an optical zoom). Wide-angle shots look cool, much more space fits into the frame, which can be useful when shooting nature or, for example, children’s parties. then, using the processor and machine learning, composes one of the most successful images.
In short, the camera is the most noticeable difference between the iPhone 11 and the iPhone XR.
FRONT CAMERA Now 12MP, not 7.iPhone 11 can shoot 4K and slow-motion video with the front camera, iPhone XR could not.
This news will delight lovers of selfies and video calls, now you will be seen much better! ⠀ BATTERY 1 hour longer than the iPhone XR. A global leap forward in the case of the battery can not be expected, since technology in this regard is at its limit and any longer battery life can be achieved in only two ways: by increasing the size of the battery itself. battery or improving the energy efficiency of the processor. That’s just due to the newer processor iPhone 11 and “added” one hour.
From personal experience: with active use, the new XR had 15-20 percent of the charge by 10 pm, while 11 had about 30-35%. So with that and that phone, you can count on a full day of active use at first. But as the battery wears out, the iPhone 11 will last longer for a full day than the iPhone XR. ⠀ WATER AND DUST PROTECTION Now the ip68 standard versus the iPhone XR’s ip67. according to Apple, now the phone can be immersed in water for 30 minutes, not 1m, but 2m. But it is still better to understand that this is more protection from moisture (rain, wet hands, shower, etc.) than an opportunity diving. Water damage to the phone will not be guaranteed.
iPhone 11 is a high-quality “restyling” of the iPhone XR.
The iPhone 11 gets a screen from its predecessor, the iPhone XR. The diagonal is 6.1 inches. An IPS matrix with a resolution of 828 by 1792 pixels is used. The aspect ratio is 19.5: 9. The screen is protected by a scratch-resistant glass with an oleophobic coating. There is an automatic brightness adjustment mode and many other settings.
The iPhone 11 Pro has a 5.8-inch screen with a resolution of 1125 by 2436 pixels and an aspect ratio of 19.5: 9. The Super Retina XDR OLED matrix is used, which, in contrast to the IPS matrix, has an improved contrast ratio. Scratch-resistant glass with an oleophobic coating provides screen protection.

The screen-to-face ratio is 82.1%, which is slightly higher than the regular version. Front camera, speakers and sensors are located in the shutter at the top of the screen.
iPhone 11 Pro is IP68 water and dust resistant and can be immersed in water for half an hour to a depth of 4 m.
The back of the iPhone 11 has a square platform that houses two cameras, a flash, and a microphone. In the center of the case is the Apple logo, which has been shifted slightly lower than in previous models. As for the colors, there are black, green, purple, yellow, white and red versions of the smartphone.
The iPhone 11 Pro also received a square platform on the back in the upper left corner. But, unlike the regular version, it has 3 cameras, as well as a microphone and flash. The company logo is also located in the very center. The surface of the case has received a matte coating, which should provide the smartphone with additional protection from scratches. Sold in 4 colors, namely gray, silver, gold and dark green.
By the way, we recommend that you consider an exact copy of the iPhone 11. The model is perfect as a gift!
iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro received a new 6-core Apple A13 Bionic processor, 2 cores of which are clocked at 2.65 GHz, and 4 cores are clocked at 1.8 GHz. The amount of RAM for both smartphones is the same and amounts to 4 GB.
As for the built-in memory, there are some differences. iPhone 11 is available in 64GB, 128GB, or 256GB versions. iPhone 11 Pro is available in 64GB, 256GB, or 512GB versions. The ability to install a memory card is not provided in both smartphones.
In the performance test AnTuTu Benchmark, both models show approximately the same result.

By the number of colors presented, we put the iPhone XR on the phone.
Size and weight
If you use your phone more often to view social networks than to make calls, then it is better to choose a smartphone with a larger screen size. iPhone XR wins in terms of screen size. iPhone X looks better in two ways: thickness and weight.
In terms of performance, last year’s XR was in no way inferior to its “big brothers”. the processor of the model was a six-core Apple A12 Bionic, made using a 7-nm process technology. A quad-core video accelerator with support for Metal 2 technology was responsible for the graphics operation. In general, the power of this solution will be enough for several more years, so as not to feel lags and drawdowns, for example, in new games.
The processor of the younger iPhone is the Apple A13 Bionic. It focuses on machine learning and neural networks. A separate controller that will distribute the processing power. As the developers promise, energy efficiency has skyrocketed, with a performance increase of 20%. And, of course, at the presentation they again said that this is the most powerful mobile in the history of the company.
IPhone 11 vs XR Comparison
Last year’s XR was content with a single-camera main photomodule. The 12-megapixel camera has a wide-angle module and an f / 1.8 sensitivity. Plus, the iPhone XR has excellent optical image stabilization, which helps a lot when recording 4K footage at 60fps.
In 2019, the younger iPhone received a dual-camera module, each sensor of which has a resolution of 12 megapixels. The first one has a wide-angle lens, the second one. 120-degree ultra-wide angle with f / 1.8 and f / 2.4 apertures, respectively. The smartphone has an advanced night mode. Both cameras can record 4K video at 60 frames per second. The front camera is now also 12 megapixels and can shoot video in slo-mo.
iPhone 11 vs iPhone X. Should You Upgrade?
Today, last year’s “budget iPhone” is very expensive in Russia. The initial 64 GB version (there is very little such a drive now) is offered on the official website at a price of 49,999 thousand rubles. 128 GB is estimated at 70 thousand rubles, and 256 GB. 79 thousand rubles. Not cheap, but if you search, you can find price tags 5-10% lower.
In the US, the basic version will start selling on September 20 at a price of 699 (45.6 thousand rubles). In Russia, the basic “youngest” will cost 59.9 thousand rubles for 128 GB. 64.9 thousand rubles, and the maximum version will cost 74 thousand rubles.

At the moment, a couple of characteristics are not reliably known. For example, while there is no information on the amount of RAM and the exact amount of batteries. Over time, we will definitely add this information to the plate. In the meantime, consider what is.

Black, silver, gold and dark green
I am sure that while studying the tablet, your enthusiasm increased. And it is justified, because something really principled iPhone 11 does not differ from its older counterparts. And you will be able to save money when buying.
Once again, below are all the main differences between the iPhone 11 and the Pro versions:
- IPS versus OLED display looks weaker, however HDR video playback is supported
- less memory in the top: 256 vs 512 GB
- no 12MP rear camera with telephoto lens. no 2x zoom
- battery larger than the Pro, but smaller than the Max version
- the size of the 11th is a cross between Pro and Pro Max
- aluminum instead of steel
- immersion in water up to 2 meters instead of 4
- other body colors
The two biggest differences are the display with slightly wider bezels than the Pro and the lack of a third camera. In all other respects, this is a new, high-end and very powerful iPhone. It easily bends over all existing flagships on Android, shoots with the main camera in the same way as its older brothers (Smart HDR, night mode, 4K 60 FPS), and so on. An overpayment of about 30 thousand rubles just for the camera and a couple of nuances that can only be detected by direct comparison is a dubious thing.
Be that as it may, lower for all-all new iPhone eleven models in Russia.
Which to choose. iPhone 11 or iPhone 11 Pro
Apple continues to offer customers a wide range of iPhones at 9,990, however, for the 9,990 price tag for the younger iPhone 11 Pro, you get the same great camera as the more expensive iPhone 11 Pro Max, along with an OLED display and extended battery life So if you’re on a tight budget, it’s better to pay attention to the iPhone 11, and only take the iPhone 11 Pro Max if you really need a large 6.5-inch display.
IPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro connectivity
Both the iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro include 802.11ax Wi-Fi and Gigabit LTE. They support Bluetooth 5.0 and have NFC readers to support Apple Pay. In terms of wireless interfaces, there is absolutely no difference between them.
IPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro colors
iPhone 11 is available in purple, yellow, green, black, white, and red. iPhone 11 Pro is available in green, classic space gray, silver, and gold. All models have the same notch (bangs) on the front, volume and side buttons, mute switch, speaker grilles, microphones and a Lightning port.
IPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro battery
The battery life of the iPhone 11 is one hour longer than the iPhone XR (its direct predecessor). According to Apple internal testing, the iPhone 11 is rated for 17 hours of downloaded video playback, 10 hours of Wi-Fi video streaming, and 65 hours of audio playback on a single charge.
IPhone 11 Pro battery life is four hours longer than the iPhone XS. up to 18 hours of downloaded video playback, up to 11 hours of Wi-Fi video streaming, and up to 65 hours of audio playback on a single charge.
iPhone 11 Pro Max has the longest battery life in an iPhone. five hours longer than the iPhone XS Max. It is rated for 20 hours of offline video playback, 12 hours of Wi-Fi video streaming, and 80 hours of audio playback.
All three models support wireless charging on any Qi-compatible device, as well as fast charging with an 18W or higher USB-C charger and Lightning-USB-C cable. Notably, the iPhone 11 Pro and 11 Pro Max ships with an 18W charger and a Lightning-USB-C cable, but the iPhone 11 doesn’t include these updated accessories and instead ships with the previous 5W charger and cable. Lightning-USB-A.
IPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro performance
Both the iPhone 11 and the iPhone 11 Pro (like the iPhone 11 Pro Max) are powered by Apple’s Bionic A13 chip, which the company claims is the fastest processor in a smartphone.
The A13 Bionic has four high-performance cores that are 20 percent faster and use 40 percent less power than the A12 Bionic, and two more cores that are 20 percent faster and 30 percent more efficient. The amount of RAM is still unknown, but there are assumptions.
How the iPhone 11 differs from the iPhone 11 Pro
We have already compared the iPhone XR and iPhone 11, it is time now to push the heads of the representatives of the new generation of iPhone. For clarity, we have compiled a small table using official Apple data. The main differences are highlighted in red.
IPhone 11 vs iPhone 11 Pro vs iPhone 11 Pro Max
If you are interested in learning more (and judging by what they say in our Telegram chat, this is how it is), now we will tell you.
IPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro display
iPhone 11 features a 6.1-inch “Liquid Retina HD” IPS display, while the iPhone 11 Pro family boasts a sharper OLED “Super Retina XDR” display. While the IPS display on the iPhone 11 delivers true-to-life colors, the OLED on the iPhone 11 Pro is brighter in sunlight, can display true blacks and more detail in bright areas. In particular, the iPhone 11 reaches a maximum brightness of 625 nits, while the iPhone 11 Pro reaches 1200 nits. Both models support True Tone and Haptic Touch, but neither of them support 3D Touch, which Apple has dropped.
The IPS display is mainly what Apple was able to bring down the price of the iPhone 11 over the iPhone 11 Pro and 11 Pro Max, but it will be more than enough for most users who use their iPhones for social networking and gaming.
IPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro camera
Aside from the display, the camera is one of the biggest differences between the iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro.
The iPhone 11 has a dual 12-megapixel camera system with wide and ultra-wide lenses. It also supports a new Night Mode for high-quality low-light shots, auto adjust, optical image stabilization, 2x optical zoom, brighter flash, six-effect portrait mode, and Smart HDR.
By comparison, the main difference between the iPhone 11 Pro’s camera is its third telephoto lens. You also get dual optical image stabilization, 2x optical zoom, and 10x digital zoom. The main advantage of a telephoto lens is that it allows you to magnify distant objects without losing image clarity. For example, when photographing wildlife from afar or photographing at a sporting event.
The front camera of the new iPhones is the same. 12 megapixels versus 7 megapixels for the iPhone XR, and it also supports 4K video (the predecessor can record maximum in Full HD). There are also various features like “slow-motion” (slow-motion selfies), which are available for both the regular iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro Max.
What is the difference between a smartphone and an iPhone and which is better?
Users often ask how the iPhone differs from the smartphone? The question is really interesting, although it was posed incorrectly. after all, the iPhone is also a smartphone. It’s just that in recent years its name has become a household name, as, for example, in the case of a copier, because Xerox is the name of a company that, among other things, produces copiers.
A smartphone (from the English smartphone, that is, “smart phone”) is a mobile phone that successfully combines the functions of a computer. With it, you can not only call friends, but also play games, watch videos, listen to music, surf the Internet and much more.
iPhone is a series of smartphones produced by Apple.
And what happens? And the fact that calling the iPhone a smartphone, you can not go wrong.!
What is the Difference Between Smartphones and iPhones?
Now let’s talk about what makes the iPhone different from other smartphones.
Perhaps the first and most important thing is the iOS operating system. Our site has already managed to tell about it. This operating system is interesting in that it is used exclusively on devices from Apple, so you will not find it on smartphones or tablets from other manufacturers. This is good, on the one hand, and bad, on the other. Good, because Apple is honing its operating system to shine, so it often works much more stable than other operating systems. And the bad thing is that it is impossible to install it, for example, on an LG phone.
The second important difference is the small model range. So, for a long time Apple released only one model, which was later joined by the iPhone 5c. The same goes for the screen size, although in the sixth generation two devices came out at once. one with a screen diagonal of 4.7 inches, and the second with 5.5 inches. Now look at the huge selection of Android devices. the difference is fantastic. So if you don’t like the look of the iPhone, there’s no choice but to start looking at devices from other manufacturers.
As for the appearance, there is nothing unusual here. In previous years, Apple could shock the appearance of its devices (remember, for example, the iPhone 4 with a glass back cover), but now it is an ordinary smartphone. Of course, it differs in the presence of expensive materials, but all this invariably affects the cost of the device. But on the back there is a corporate logo. a bitten apple.
IPhones lack a memory card slot. This can be said to be Apple’s proprietary feature. Of course, you can always choose an iPhone with a large amount of memory, but the price difference will be several thousand rubles, while it is true, for the sake of fairness, we note that now many manufacturers refuse slots for memory cards. Fortunately, not all.
Some users refer to the disadvantages of the non-removable battery in the iPhone. In our opinion, this should not be considered a disadvantage. Firstly, in most modern smartphones it is impossible to replace the battery (except in the service), and secondly, it lasts 2-3 years, while the average smartphone replacement period is only one year.
It should be noted that it supports only one SIM-card. True, the latest models have eSIM. support for a virtual SIM card.
As for everything else, including specifications, availability of applications, quality of shooting, etc., in this regard, the iPhone does not differ much from other Android devices. What’s better? It’s up to you to decide. You can go to some electronics hypermarket and compare iPhone to another smartphone you like.
Anyway, we found out that the iPhone is also a smartphone that has its own characteristics.

HDR10 and Dolby Vision support
With the OLED panel’s maximum contrast ratio, the iPhone 11 Pro and Pro Max support HDR10 and Dolby Vision. In short, the essence of these formats for video content is to expand the dynamic range and make the picture as bright, contrasting, saturated as possible. The base iPhone 11 features an IPS LCD panel that has limited contrast. This is explained by the specifics of the backlight and the inability to get perfect black. On smartphones with an IPS screen, it is not black, but dark gray. Since the dynamic range is limited by the capabilities of the sensor, the iPhone 11 does not support HDR10 and Dolby Vision.
IPhone 11 screen tests
With the theory sorted out, it’s time to move on to testing the iPhone 11 screen and advanced models of the line. The first test is to check the maximum brightness and contrast. Apple iPhone 11. Lab tests have shown that the Liquid Retina display has a maximum brightness of 644 nits. That’s slightly lower than last year’s iPhone XR, which hit the 700 nit grandmaster mark.
There is a slight problem with black saturation (predictable, since perfect black is unattainable with IPS backlighting, as we have already said). The black background brightness on the iPhone 11 screen is 0.428 nits, although it should ideally be zero. But the ideal is achievable only on an OLED matrix, but here IPS.
The maximum matrix contrast is 1505: 1. According to this indicator, the iPhone 11 is far behind the top models of the line and is slightly inferior to last year’s iPhone XR. Apple iPhone 11 Pro and 11 Pro Max display. Laboratory tests carried out by GSMArena experts under similar conditions on the same equipment gave the following results:
- IPhone 11 Pro has a maximum brightness of 805 nits.
- IPhone 11 Pro Max has a maximum brightness of 820 nits.
Apple claims a maximum brightness of 1200 nits. It is quite possible, because the test result was obtained with manual brightness settings, that is, with the slider turned to the maximum. With auto adjustments, the iPhone 11 Pro’s screen gets even brighter, but it’s outdoors in bright ambient light, not in a lab. By the way, DisplayMate tests showed that the brightness of the iPhone 11 screen may be even higher than stated, but more on that in the next section.
If we compare the results with the iPhone XS and XS Max, we can see that Apple’s 2019 screens are much brighter. For last year’s models, the maximum brightness was 660 and 653 nits, respectively. Considering that the Samsung Galaxy Note 10 automatically produces a maximum brightness of 794 nits (that is, this is its ceiling), we can state that the iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max have the brightest screen to date.
The maximum contrast in the screens of new Apple products is 2,000,000: 1. That’s 2x higher than last year’s XS or XS Max (1,000,000: 1). With such a high contrast ratio, with substantial headroom, the dynamic range needed to support HDR10 is well-numbered, so the Super Retina XDR name is a perfect fit for the iPhone 11 Pro and Pro Max.
IPhone 11 screen resolution
Let’s start simple and gradually complicate things. Android smartphones usually get a standard HD or Full HD sensor. In the first case, the phone has a 1520 by 720 pixels display, in the second. 2340 by 1080. There is also a third option. an ultra-high resolution of 3120 by 1440, but it is found exclusively in the premium segment. The iPhone 11 screen doesn’t fit into any of those categories. Cupertino uses panels with a unique resolution that you will not find in other smartphones. It is difficult to remember the numbers, there is no obvious logic in them:
- IPhone 11 display resolution. 1792 by 828 pixels.
- IPhone 11 Pro screen resolution. 2436 by 1125 pixels.
- Screen resolution iPhone 11 Pro Max. 2688 by 1242 pixels.
It turns out that the resolution in the iPhone 11 is slightly higher than the standard HD, which today is found only in budget smartphones. The display resolution of the iPhone 11 Pro and 11 Pro Max is slightly higher than the classic Full HD used in flagships and mid-range phones.
The next mandatory test is color accuracy. To evaluate it, the color deviation coefficient, also known as DeltaE, is used. The average coefficient shows the color shift over the entire range, the maximum. in that part of the range where the shift is most pronounced. The lower the DeltaE coefficient, the better the color rendering.
In terms of color reproduction, the iPhone 11’s screen looks preferable. The average coefficient was 1.1, the maximum one rose to 2.4. Ideal transmission for a smartphone, which is largely due to the features of the IPS LCD panel.
The IPS LCD does not produce perfect blacks, but it does produce perfect whites, which is very important for color accuracy. Yes, the iPhone 11 screen does not break records for maximum brightness, but it gives a very correct picture in terms of color.
An important point. usually with a decrease in brightness, color accuracy deteriorates, which is due to the peculiarities of the backlight. The iPhone 11’s screen doesn’t have such a problem, and the colors remain as accurate as possible when the brightness is reduced even to 2.3 nits. Thanks to the True Tone feature we’ve covered so far. The iPhone 11 Pro’s screen is very good too! The average DeltaE coefficient is slightly higher. 1.6, but the maximum has risen to only 2.3. For an OLED panel, this is an excellent result, since it is almost impossible to get perfect white on such a matrix. Colors are not distorted at low light levels and remain accurate down to 1.9 nits of brightness.
The iPhone 11 Pro Max’s screen is larger, and display size matters for color accuracy. The larger the screen, the more difficult it is to achieve ideal performance. Accordingly, it should not be surprising that for the iPhone 11 Pro Max screen, the average deviation rate was 2.4, and the maximum one rose to 5.0.
IPhone 11 Pro Max screen: tests from DisplayMate
DisplayMate is a reputable independent laboratory that tests not only smartphones, but also monitors and TVs. Reviews designed for specialists are incredibly thorough with a large number of nuances that are incomprehensible and unnecessary for an ordinary user. Therefore, we will restrict ourselves to the conclusions reached by the experts after testing the iPhone 11 Pro Max:
- IPhone 11 Pro Max display 15% more efficient (uses less power) than last year’s iPhone XS Max.
- Home screen iPhone 11 Pro Max outputs 902 nits peak brightness in both DCI-P3 and sRGB modes.
- Brightness for standardized image. 821 nits in DCI-P3 mode and in sRGB.
- Peak brightness in HDR mode reaches 1290 nits.
- Color reproduction is almost perfect. Better than most modern smartphones, TVs and monitors.
- Protective glass in iPhone 11 Pro Max is more durable than in iPhone XS.
You can read a full review of the iPhone 11 Pro Max screen from DisplayMate here, but be prepared for the fact that you will have to understand the terminology and read in English.
iPhone 11: screen sizes and dot density
Needless to say, the iPhone 11 has a smaller screen than the iPhone 11 Pro Max, but larger than the iPhone 11 Pro? Perhaps not worth it. Let’s just list the characteristics:
- IPhone 11 screen size. 6.1 inches.
- IPhone 11 Pro screen size. 5.8 inches.
- IPhone 11 Pro Max screen diagonal. 6.5 inches.
Knowing the screen diagonal and resolution, it’s easy to calculate the pixel density, or ppi. To do this, you need to get the total number of pixels and divide it by the display area in square inches. Through simple mathematical calculations, we get the following numbers:
- iPhone 11. 326 ppi dot density.
- iPhone 11 Pro. 458 ppi dot density.
- iPhone 11 Pro Max. 458 ppi dot density.
The higher the pixel density, the clearer the picture. In this measure, the iPhone 11 Pro display looks preferable to the base iPhone 11. The iPhone 11 Pro Max and 11 Pro screens are equally good in this component.
IPhone 11 Pro screen: matrix type
One of the key characteristics of the display is the type of matrix, and here we have fundamental differences.
The iPhone 11 screen is built on the Liquid Retina matrix. The name hides not a unique technology, but an ordinary IPS LCD panel, albeit of a very high quality. The iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max use an OLED matrix, which Cupertino marketers have dubbed the Super Retina XDR. Does a pretty name match the quality of the picture? Let’s learn from the tests, but for now let’s say that the OLED screen allows you to realize a number of features that are not available for smartphones with IPS LCD. We talk about them in the next section.
