Changing boot order in UEFI BIOS
On modern motherboards, the BIOS interface, or more precisely, the UEFI software, is usually graphical and, perhaps, more understandable in terms of changing the order of boot devices.
In most variants, for example, on Gigabyte (not all) or Asus motherboards, you can change the boot order by simply dragging and dropping the disk images with the mouse.
If this is not possible, look in the BIOS Features section, in the Boot Options item (the last item may be located in a different place, but the boot order is set there).
Using the Boot Menu to boot from a USB flash drive
In most cases, installing a boot from a USB flash drive in the BIOS is required for some one-time task: installing Windows, checking the computer for viruses using the LiveCD, resetting the Windows password.
In all these cases, it is not necessary to change the BIOS or UEFI settings, it is enough to call the Boot Menu (boot menu) when you turn on the computer and once select the USB flash drive as the boot device.

How to enable boot from a USB flash drive in BIOS on an Asus laptop
There are two ways to boot from a USB flash drive on an Asus laptop:
- through a combination of buttons to go to the BIOS;
- using the USB key forcing.
Before booting from USB, the user needs to create a bootable disk. For this it is recommended to use the UltraISO program. The estimated amount of internal memory of a portable drive for a successful OS boot must be at least 4 GB, and the file system must be FAT32.
If initially the flash drive has NTFS format, then it must be formatted. Right-click on the USB drive icon and select the “Format” line.
Normal BIOS setup
After loading the operating system and writing it to a USB flash drive as a boot disk, you need to go to BIOS.
Instructions for switching to BIOS on an Asus laptop:
- Turn off your laptop.
- Press the power button. When the manufacturer icon appears, press and hold the F2 button for 5-7 seconds.
- Wait for the menu to appear.

On an Asus laptop, you can set the BIOS to boot from a USB flash drive as follows:
- After going to BIOS, go to the Security tab. It is located in the top panel menu.

If you are using an old BIOS version (BIOS Award), then it is recommended to do the following to start:
- Turn off your laptop. Press the power button.
- When the manufacturer’s icon appears, press F2 or Del.
- Go to the Advanced BIOS Features tab.
- Opposite the line First Boot Device, select the inserted drive. Make sure there is a different boot item next to Second Boot Device.
- Press Enter to accept the changes and then ESC to exit. Make sure all the settings you made are saved.
If you come across the BIOS version H2Insyde20, then the instructions for Asus are as follows:
- Use the Del or F2 key to enter the BIOS menu.
- Select the Boot tab.
- Set External Device Boot to Enabled.
- Below in the Boot Priority item, put External Device in the first place.
- Go to Exit and select Save and Exit to accept the changes and restart your computer.
Note! The Intel CoffeeLake processor line does not support the Launch CSM feature, so the value will always remain off. In this case, you will have to use EZ Boot Mode.
Setting up the graphical uefi BIOS BIOS utility ez mode
To successfully boot from a USB flash drive, on an Asus laptop via EZ Mode, you need to do the following:
- Turn off the device.
- Press the power button. When the manufacturer’s icon appears, press the ESC button several times until the BIOS menu appears.
- Make sure that a USB flash drive is displayed under the USB Port item.

Why does not he see the bootable USB flash drive and what to do
If the system does not see the bootable USB flash drive, then the problem may be as follows:
- Launch CSM is not enabled;
- ASUS Secure Boot has not been disabled;
- the data was written to the drive incorrectly and the system does not read USB as a bootable element;
- the file system has not been changed, NTFS is not always supported as a bootable flash drive.
It is recommended to use the Rufus software to correctly record the USB stick. It allows you to select the partition scheme and interface type for different motherboards.
- Download the application from the official website of the manufacturer and install it.
- Run the program. Next, you need to configure the parameters of the flash drive. Select in the first line the USB drive to be overwritten.
- In the next line, select GPT with UEFI support.
- At the bottom, check the box next to the phrase “Create bootable disk”. The ISO format should be on the right. Click even more to the right on the disk icon and select the downloaded operating system in ISO format.
- Make sure there is a check mark next to “Standard Windows Installation”.
- Press start to start burning the image. Wait for the end and remove the USB flash drive.
The BIOS may not see USB if the drive is being used in a USB 3.0 port. A more proven option is to use an older USB 2.0 port. The rest of the problems should not arise during the download, especially if you strictly followed our instructions.
Booting from a USB flash drive to BIOS: step by step instructions
So, to put a boot from a USB flash drive in the BIOS on a laptop, you need:
- Initially, we connect the USB drive to the device. That is, we insert it into the USB connector.
- We reboot the laptop. When enabled, press the Delete or F2 key. Depends on manufacturer, BIOS version and model. Sometimes you even need to press Esc, F1, Tab.
- Disable Secure Boot Protocol. This is special protection. It is also available in the UEFI BIOS, the most common version preferred by many modern laptop manufacturers. To disable it, select the Security section. Here we are looking for the Secure Boot line, in which we set the value Disabled (disabled). If this is not done, then the corresponding protocol will not allow you to boot your laptop from the USB flash drive. Priority will remain with the Windows installation disc.
- Go to the Boot tab. Select the item Hard Drive BBS Priorities. We move our flash card to the first place in the list of boot devices (the hard disk automatically moves to the second). We also disable the “fast boot” option: in the Fast Boot line, select the Disabled value. If you see the Launch CSM item, then you need to translate it to Enable. Do not forget that in BIOS we can navigate through sections, tabs and lines only by using the buttons on the keyboard. The mouse won’t help you.
However, the BIOS versions are different for all manufacturers and laptop models. Therefore, the above procedure is not suitable for all devices. For example, if you go into BIOS and see a similar interface, then you have Award BIOS.
Then it’s best to start a bootable USB flash drive like this:
- Go to the “Integrated Peripherals” section.
- Approximately in the middle of the screen, we find the item “USB Controller” with the arrows on the keyboard.
- We press Enter. In the window, select the value “Enable”.
- Please note that the line “USB Controller 2.0” also has “Enable”.
- Press Esc. We leave this section. Then we go to Advanced BIOS Features. The name translates as additional or advanced settings. Here we need the item “Hard Disk Boot Priority”.
- We go in and see what is in the 1st place. There must be a flash drive, not a hard drive. Therefore, we select the USB-card and use the “” button to lift it up.
- Press Esc. Select the line “First Boot Device” and set the value to “USB-HDD” (or USB-FDD, if the first option fails to boot from a USB flash drive into BIOS on a laptop).
- Click Esc again. Select “Save Exit Setup”, then press the Y key.
There are also other versions of the BIOS. These are both Phoenix-Award BIOS and AMI BIOS. True, they are all found only on old laptops with not the most recent motherboards. How to configure booting from a USB flash drive for such devices? All the same. Only the names of the sections and BIOS menu items differ. The algorithm of actions and settings is as similar as possible.
For reference! As we have already noted, in order to install a boot from a USB flash drive in the BIOS, you need to disable the Secure Boot protocol. That being said, on many lenovo laptops, this is not enough. You may also need to enable compatibility mode. It is called differently. Therefore, look for CSM / CSM Boot, UEFI and Legacy OS, Legacy BIOS, Legacy Support, etc.
How else can you boot from a USB flash drive on a laptop?
Using a computer BIOS is not the only option. For example, it is possible to boot from a USB flash drive on a laptop asus, toshiba, Samsung, etc. and through a special boot menu. It is called the Boot Menu (by the way, it is also part of the BIOS). You can enter it during the initial download phase. You just need to press Esc, F8, F11 or F12 quite often. Which key exactly depends on the motherboard developer and the BIOS version used in it.
Once in the Boot Menu, you need to select and install the boot from the USB flash drive using the arrows on the keyboard. Then all you have to do is press Enter. Agree, it’s quite convenient and simple. However, it is not always possible to enter the boot menu. The fact is that on some laptop models the Boot Menu option is deactivated in the BIOS. Therefore, additional steps are required to enable it.
There is one more thing worth paying attention to. The Boot Menu does not have any unified design. It can also be called differently: “MultiBoot Menu”, “BBS Popup”, “Boot Agent”, etc. However, in any boot menu there is a list of devices from which the boot can be performed.
How to boot a laptop from a USB flash drive via UEFI?
Many modern computing devices (especially those with the latest versions of Windows) come with a new bootstrap interface. It is called UEFI. Working with this “variant” of BIOS is a little easier. Plus, you can use the mouse here. However, despite the fact that the new interface is more understandable, not all users know how to work with it. Therefore, we will briefly describe the entire procedure.
For example, to boot from a USB flash drive on an HP laptop to UEFI, you need to:
- When booting the device, press the ESC key several times. Then F10 to get into BIOS Setup.
- Now, at the very bottom of the window, find the Boot Priority section.
- Just drag the USB flash drive icon to the first place.

How to boot a laptop from a USB flash drive

- Windows 7 laptop can’t boot from USB 3.0 stick? Indeed, this OS version does not support this standard without special drivers. Therefore, the easiest way is to switch the USB stick to a different slot. After all, many laptops have both a 3.0 and 2.0 flash drive slot. It’s pretty easy to tell them apart. USB 3.0 has blue color (2.0 has black) and two letters SS next to the port.
- Do you press a variety of keys on your keyboard when you boot the OS, but still can’t get into the BIOS or Boot Menu? - If you cannot boot a laptop from a USB drive using the boot menu, then you need to go into the BIOS. Here you need to make sure that the boot device priority is set correctly. - Quite often on laptops with Windows 8 and 10, it is not possible to boot into the BIOS from a flash drive. Disabling the quick start function helps. To do this, go to the Control Panel. Stage 1: how to enter the boot menu
There are two radically different ways.
The first is with a specially performed laptop reboot. This is the recommended way.

I have applied this method once, when my laptop crashed severely after updating one of the applications. The laptop hung at the start and did not want to display an authorization window. Hence, I could not login to the system to do a reboot with special parameters.

How to configure BIOS to boot from disk or flash drive

What is BIOS and UEFI
Each motherboard has a special program to boot the computer and configure the parameters of various devices. This program is stitched (programmed) into a special microcircuit on the motherboard and is therefore called firmware.
Previously, all motherboards had a firmware called BIOS, which had a simple graphical interface with white letters on a blue background and was limited in functionality. For example, in the BIOS it was impossible to use a mouse, choose a language, and there were no graphic elements (pictures) due to the limited size of the BIOS memory chip. Also, motherboards with BIOS did not support drives larger than 2TB due to limitations of the old disk partitioning system (MBR).
Now many motherboards have a new type of firmware called UEFI, which features an improved graphical interface with a beautiful background, hand-drawn buttons, the ability to select a language (including Russian) and some improvements. For example, support for a new type of disk partitions (GPT), which allows the use of hard drives larger than 2 TB.
You can find out what type of firmware your motherboard has in the manual for it, on the website of the manufacturer of the motherboard or laptop, and also visually when entering the Setup program. The Setup program is also stitched into the motherboard and is used to change BIOS or UEFI settings.
How to enter BIOS Setup
To enter the Setup program, immediately after turning on the computer, hold down the “Delete” button on the keyboard. On some motherboards and laptops, this is done using the F2, F10, or Esc keys. Which button to press can be read in the messages that appear immediately after turning on the computer.
If you do not have time to read, then press the “Pause” button on the keyboard to pause the download. You can continue downloading by pressing any key. If you press the key intended to enter Setup, you will immediately be taken to the motherboard setup program.
Friends, due to the fact that many had problems with booting when installing Windows and some wrote about it in the comments, I decided to make a separate section where I collected the ways I know how to solve these problems.
- If the computer stops booting at the very beginning and asks to press F1, after which it enters the BIOS, then you most likely either have a low battery on the motherboard (time may get lost), problems with the processor cooler (out of order, it was not connected there) or a hard drive (errors in Smart).
- If the message “Reboot and Select proper Boot device or Insert Boot Media in selected Boot device and press a key” appears when you turn on the PC, this means that the boot area on the disk or flash drive was not found or is damaged. Try to boot from the installation disk or flash drive using the Boot Menu (section 6 of the article), if it does not help, make the bootable media again using the Windows USB / DVD Download Tool.
- If, after restarting the computer, the installation of Windows starts from the beginning, then remove the boot disk or USB flash drive and restart the computer, the installation should continue from the hard disk.
- Disconnect all unnecessary USB devices from the computer (USB flash drive, 3G modem, smartphone, printer). You only need to leave the mouse, keyboard, DVD-disk or USB flash drive from which you are installing Windows.
- If you have several hard disks, then disconnect all disks from the motherboard, except for the one on which Windows will be installed.
- Reset BIOS settings to defaults (described in this article).
- If the installer does not see the disk or at the end the error 0x0000007B appears, change the SATA controller mode in the BIOS from AHCI to IDE or vice versa.
- If at each boot the computer or laptop enters the BIOS itself or opens the boot menu, then set the Boot Pop Menu option in the BIOS to Disable (if any).
- Disable Fast Boot in the Advanced section of the BIOS, and in the Boot section, set the Launch CSM option to Enable (if any).
- Under Boot in BIOS, change Boot Mode from EFI (UEFI) to Legacy (if available).
- Set the BIOS to the Secure Boot option to Disable (if any).
- Select the version of Windows you are installing in BIOS (if any).
- If you have a laptop, one version of Windows is installed, but the other is not, and advice on setting up the BIOS did not help you, then contact the support or the manufacturer’s forum. Updating the BIOS can also help, after which additional options may appear in it (clauses 8-12).
- If possible, install Windows from a DVD, as there are many different problems with flash drives.
- Make a bootable disk or USB flash drive from the original image.
- Insert the USB stick into the USB 2.0 port on the back of your computer (motherboard) or the USB 2.0 port on your laptop. Booting from USB 3.0 does not always work.
- Try using the Boot Menu, as described in section 6 of this article. This method is easier, more reliable than setting the boot priority in the BIOS and you can determine whether the computer sees your USB flash drive.
- An underscore on a black screen indicates that the computer freezes when accessing a USB flash drive or hard drive. If the download goes on without a flash drive, then the point is definitely in it.
- If the computer does not see the USB flash drive or does not want to boot from it, use a DVD or another USB flash drive for installation.
- If this is not possible, then change the type of flash drive from “removable media” to “hard disk” using the “BootIt Next Generation” utility, format it with the “HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool” utility and make it bootable again using “Windows USB / DVD Download Tool “. You can download all these utilities below in the “Links” section.
- If the problem occurs after selecting the Windows installation partition, then use the BIOS setup tips (p. 7-12). Remove old partitions from the disk during installation or do it using the Acronis Disk Director boot disk.
- If the installer reports that it cannot install Windows to the disk, then try converting MBR to GPT or vice versa.
